Both have their hits and their misses.

I'm very selective with both as a lot of progressive puts me to sleep and a lot of techno makes me want to jump off a tall building.

When either is done right though, wow.

techno done right - Mauro Picotto - Dark Room
progressive done right - Tyrell and Supercreep - Dope Quarter (Traiano mix)

To me anyways.

Just like too much alcohol can damage a liver, too much of that can blow out even the most weathered cerebellum.

prog from the 'good' era, eg cass&slide, and the more melodic progtrance of up until 2001/2 is good, Techno is also good but there's so much to it, so many tracks & styles, and yes both genres have their bad stuff, find me one that doesn't

yup. But actually, you'd be suprised by the amount of good prog coming out in 2005. I've become a Proton radio addict because of this. Techno is a little too obtuse for me to get my head around sometimes. I've tried to get into it, I really have. And I'll continue to try just for the sheer fact that I think it's probably the most down-to-earth genre of EDM. It's just so hard for me to.

I like both styles, Theres been a huge explosion of Proggy Techno tracks, Thanks to producers such as the Filterheadz or Santiago Nino, I also believe Nathan Fake and James Holden falls in either of those catagories.

Holden definately has some progressive tracks but Filterheadz? They're definately house, although I think it depends more on the track itself for some producers and they don't just stick to one exact style or genre (ie. Gabriel and Dresden).

Many of Filterheadz tracks kind of has sort of a techno/tribal progressive house vibe to them, Really hard to describe.

Tracks these days are way too hard to categorize. So many songs just use elements from multiple genres.

I give up, it's all just EDM to me

Yeah, It has become increasingly dificult to catagorize many of the new tunes out there.

Prog = Boring beats with even longer slower boring mixes and buildups

Techno = Less boring beats with fast, creative and interesting mixes and short cuts (if mixed well)

Both are good if done well but I definately have more respect for techno DJs.

I prefer prog much more than techno. Prog has more layers, more emotion and is less frantic and chaotic. Sure some techno is good, but a whole set of that stuff would drive me nuts. I like how DJs like Carl Cox can play a techno set, but it's not always "bang, bang, bang", sure he can be really bangin' and boomin' lol, but he kind of spices things up with house (the harder, funkier or more tribal variety usually), some breaks and even a little trance and prog here and there. Prog just has different feelings to it, like it can be really techy and pretty hard like DJ Remy or Santiago Nino, or really emotional and melodic like Perry O'Neil or Alucard (I know..more like trance, but considered "progressive trance" by most).

There's enough techno out there that has plenty of both.

For me definitely techno, although I'm pretty picky about it at times.. I can't stand most of todays progressive, but I'm a big fan of the Baroque / Hooj / Bedrock / etc. sound from around 2000.

Maybe emotional is not the exact word I'd use but there certainly is a lot of stuff out there that has a certain warmth to it. I thought you'd know though

Have a look for Solid Sessions - Visions. Although it's more tech-house than techno, it's a definite goodie.

I'd also like to mention Deetron - What if (tomorrow never comes), I'm not too keen on his usual stuff but this track is a great listen.

Sure there's plenty more out there.. Kanzleramt does some good stuff, and of course there's loads of awesome Detroit-like tracks, but I suck at names.

As I said, emotional might not be the right word for the atmosphere they have, but it's far from the rattling no-brainer plant noise some people keep associating techno with.

juno samples FTW, i think everyone on this site needs to start using them more

i can see how you mean with the 'certain warmth'... although it's subtle in that example. i'll have a look through those others though since i like most stuff with an atmospheric air to it. just the only techno i've really listened to up until now has been harder dancefloor orientated stuff (yes i'm a relative newbie, shoot me down!)

That Solid Sessions mix might be a little hard to come by though. If you can't find it but are really appealed by the tracklist hit me up on PM and I'll see what I can do for you

Progressive is way better than techno, Sasha could beat any techno DJ,eg. Dave Cleark, at mixing,DJing skills or productions!
