Review: Armin at Ruby Skyeb

By far the BEST party I've attended in San Francisco. Ever. Better than Love Parade. Better than Steve Lawler friday night at Mezzanine. Better than many other parties.

Armin played a pretty good set, but what amazed me most is the party itself. People came out to dance on a sunday night, and dance they did ! It is a rarity to see such enthusiasm and energy on the dancefloor throughout the whole set !

What time did Armin finish ? I left during some techno remix of Need to Feel Loved, which was like the 3rd encore.

Surprised he didn't play Serenity. Was quite looking forward to hearing that actually.

He finished at 3:35am....so a 3 hour, 50 minute set.

Musically, a better set than his LA set.
Crowd was, not as "crazy" as the LA crowd (there are reasons why, COUGH), but...uhhhh, more appreciative. People were there for Armin and only Armin. Was insane.

Was insane when Armin jumped up on the decks!!

Was awesome when he played Zocalo and got Gabriel & Dresden to be with him.

Was awesome G&D were there. :-p

Armin played G&D ft. Molly - At the Same Time. Whoot. :-p

Sucks that after thinking I was fighting off becoming sick, I woke up sick today.

was it just me or was the sound really bad at ruby skye yesterday? my ears were killing me last night and i wasn't able to enjoy the set...

Posted by DaveT on Oct-10-2005 19:25:

Yeah, sound was definitely out of tune compared to usual. Can attest to having slightly screaming ears when leaving. Interestingly, have heard issues with the sound system there since Love Parade weekend.

They need to bring someone in and just retune it.

Now if my face would unclog itself.

I was there last night too, and damn Armin was just pounding us all night. But I loved every minute of it. What I really thought was wierd and something I don't see often with Armin was that after the show, he just packed his stuff and left. No autographs, no pictures. I mean I'm not mad or anything, I understand if he's tired and all. Overall, the crowd was good, Armin was great, and I can't wait to see Armin again. Better yet, can't wait to see Armin get the number one spot on Mixmag dj poll.

This is just my belief but I think Armin was being rushed out because of the night before at Spundae LA where after he finished his set he was mobbed by hundreds of people and literally inched towards the exit minutes per step. It was pretty ugly...after a few minutes of getting nowhere he had to be dragged by the shirt through the groupies just to get to the door. Seeing as Armin just got done with a six-day coast-to-coast-to-coast tour, Spundae was probably trying to give the guy a break and not do a repeat of Saturday.

Posted by DaveT on Oct-10-2005 20:21:

And Armin did sign some stuff and take pics...just those who were able to get it were people who rushed the stage during the last few tracks...and that's when someone had to take charge and just get Armin out of there...because the bumrush was occuring. Saturday's rush was a bit rediculous, lol.

He signed some stuff during his set, yeah. Some dude up at the front with me took off his shirt and handed it to Armin, which Armin signed while smiling really big.

Overall a seriously incredible night! One of the best shows I've been to in the bay area for sure. The energy was there and so many people in the crowd knew the music (at least in the front near the stage ). I was probably surrounded by TAs, at least it seemed like that by how many people were singing the songs (even singing the lyrics to "without you" when they weren't playing, since he played the dub ).

Here's what I can remember him spinning (sorry there isn't more, alcohooool!)

Deepsky feat Jes - Ghost vs Yilmaz Altanhan - Eighties (Armin van Buuren mashup)
Dogzilla - Without You (dub)
Kuffdam & Plant - Summer Dream (Paul van Dyk Remix)
Andy Moor - Halcyon
Jonas Steur - Castamara
Armin van Buuren with Gabriel & Dresden - ZoCalo
Armin van Buuren feat Justine Suissa - Burned With Desire
Armin van Buuren - Shivers (Alex M.O.R.P.H. Remix)
Gabriel & Dresden feat Molly - Tracking Treasure Down
Markus Schulz feat Departure with Gabriel & Dresden - Without You Near (Original Mix)
Reflekt feat Delline Bass - Need to Feel Loved
U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name (Nu-NRG Instrumental)
The Police - S.O.S. (Sander van Doorn Remix)
Randy Katana - Play it Louder
Holden & Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning Mix)

The opener's set was also very good. Who was it? I knew at least half the tracks he played, but can't name most of them. One was Paul van Dyk feat Wayne Jackson - The Other Side (Deep Dish Remix).

Also, that was my first time hearing Castamara live in a club. Damn, I went nuts soooo many times last night!

The guy who played before Armin was Syd Gris from Opel (Productions).

Interestingly, I have NEVER heard him play that style ever before and he impressed me bigtime. I spoke to him about it and it turns out what he played last night was his first love, just he never really gets the chance to play like that. That man needs to be booked on trance nights more often. Wowzas.

+
Three Drives - Greece 2000 (Mark Norman Remix)
Motorcycle - Around You (G&D Remix)
Way Out West - Killa (Orkidea Remix)
Marcel Woods - Advanced
New Order - Confusion

I heard probably 6 or 7 G&D tracks last night

It was icing on the cake to see G&D come out and party with Armin

did he played Shivers?

Man, I can't believe I missed this show..I was lookin forward to it for daysssss but my company took a small group of us to Cancun from Oct 4 - Oct 8 and that trip completely drained me because we were constantly doing day trips and going out each night. I flew home at around 11pm Saturday night and still made it to a friends 28th birthday party and didn't make it home till 2am (which was 4am in my world due to the time difference). Then finally I had 2 friends still down to go to Armin but I was way too exhausted Sunday plus I had work at 9am Monday, which I could'nt miss. Needless to say I'm kinda bummed but I know I'll be front row on his next visit. I'm glad everyone had a great time and thats awesome G&D made it.

I can take solace in the fact that I just had a phenomenal trip to Cancun and visited a thousand year old Mayan ruins. I'll post a photoalbum shortly once I resize these 2500x1900 pics. Here's a little taste tho.

Good additions to the song list, thanks!

Around You was Armin's remix btw, I don't think it's released but he played it in Vegas last time I saw him there, and I think it was in an ASOT. I love what he did to it.

Posted by DaveT on Oct-11-2005 05:05:

It's an Armin edit..and it's an edit of one of the first versions G&D made...G&D redid it quite a bit which is why the version they played sounds so different.

Also didn't Armin drop Ferry Corsten-Fire towards the end? I especially loved hearing Castmara, Tracking Treasure Down, and the beautiful voice of Nadia Ali "Who is watching" on that sound system... Great set, definetly giving Tiesto a run for his money. I danced and jumped so much that night, I have no jumps left in me for a while. Really wish I didn't have to work Monday morning, craziest sunday night for SF in while.

Posted by DaveT on Oct-12-2005 06:15:

Yeah, one of his encores was Ferry Corsten - Fire

And it's Gabriel & Dresden ft. Molly - At the Same Time. It's not called "Tracking Treasure Down" officially...I think. I think that's what they were calling it at first but changed it.

Posted by DaveT on Oct-13-2005 00:28:

Actually, I AM wrong. It used to be At the Same Time, now it's called Tracking Treasure Down.

muh bad.

haha, owned! tracking treasure down is a much better title i think. at the same time sounds generic...

Apparently Matthew Dekay was in the house too! I'm such an idiot I took a pic of him without even realizing who it was

Posted by Ismael Rodriguez on Oct-19-2005 02:55:

hahaha

That was Matthew Dekay??!! I thought that was Rooz sitting in the dark that night. I was about to say "whats up fool"!!
