HappyHappy Be careful of what you say...(xtremely funny!)

This is an email I received from my friend who's over in the Dominican right now. Look what could happen when your '2nd language' is a little rusty:

"OK, so first I must correct an error that has been pointed out to me several times over since yesterday... it's "No sprecken ZE Deutsch", not "DE Deutsch"...yes, my German still sucks, which is a convenient segueway......

So my cousin Michelle and I meet some EXTREMELY friendly, very
touchy-huggy folks from East Berlin last night. Most of the folks I've met from EB have been a bit more reserved initially, so this was a little different from what I had known. Two couples, Rude & Silke and Paul & Gitte, very nice and chatty indeed. They speak some English, definitely better than what Michelle and I can mutter in German.

Anyway, they joined us for playing Rum Bingo at the bar and then we all played some cards (poker and rummy, though the discussions of the rules were clouded by both language barriers and beer, so we're still not completely sure who won).

Anyway, we all seemed to be having a very good (albeit innocent) time and agreed to meet at our room this morning to head down to breakfast together. So at 9am, both couples show up at our door. Michelle pops into the bathroom for a moment to gather her things before heading downstairs and I pop out to the balcony to grab our beach towels...and then I hear Michelle utter a small scream. I go back into the room and EVERYONE IS NAKED...everyone exept Michelle and me. And not just naked, but Rude was "ready to go". Bloody hell - total shocker!

Apparently, between the language barrier and the beer, these couples
had gotten the impression that Michelle and I were swingers and that we were all going to have an orgy in our room this morning before breakfast (we worked this out in conversation later with the some other German tourists who translated completely). I, of course, broke into a fit of laughter and snorting that was practically unstopable, which I think poor Rude took the wrong way. Michelle was not very happy at all and started yelling at them to put their clothes back on. Poor folks!

We have managed to clarify our miscommunication and are on friendly
(just not THAT FRIENDLY) terms again now. At this point, Michelle is laughing about it just as much as I am (after she had a few drinks with breakfast), thank goodness.

Anyway, thought you all would enjoy this as much as I did. I can
honestly say I will always remember this vacation vividly! :-) "

GOLD!

Absolute gold!!!

Posted by tatgirl on Oct-11-2005 06:18:

What I can't figure out is how do you tell these '3rd-party German translators' to explain to the American girls that they thought they were swingers, without making yourself look foolish, or wonder if you're gonna offend these other Germans?
(nevermind- sounds like they don't have much shame to begin with)

Ahahahaha rofl lmao... Nat this one is gold!

OMG...one day you gotta find out how u can misunderstand the word Swinger...I mean it would be good for all of us to know. I'd hate to be caught in such an awkward situation. Orgy b4 breaky anyone?

Now the next time I meet touchy feely germans...I'll be remembering this story ahaha

Posted by supernova_girl on Oct-11-2005 23:05:

Sorry, don't mean to correct, but am German and at York for German culture and Society...

"Ich sprechen klein Deutsch," would probably be the most grammarically correct, but "Sprechen Sie (pronounced 'zee', it's you formal) Deutsch?" would be properly written.

After that, POOR YOU!

PS: if you need to know any quick German phrases, PM/email me and I'll help where I can.

But I'm sure you're good where you are

Oh man, that is brutal. I guess we take it for granted, but the English language can be a real bitch.

Kein Deutsch = I speak no German

Klein Deutsch = I speak little German.
