how long do you hold your mix?

just curious on how long you guys hold your mixes for??i know every song is different, but generaly speaking, on average, about how many minutes/seconds do you hold your mix for.... : )

Posted by idoru on Oct-12-2005 06:49:

Two minutes, average. However I'm getting into looping and layering the incoming track, so a bunch of my recent mixes have been four minutes.

Posted by Omega_Blue on Oct-12-2005 07:56:

2-3.5 minutes i'd say for the most part

Posted by PutBoy on Oct-12-2005 08:34:

Depends, yeah.

1 min minimum and maybe 3-4 minutes tops.

I usually go 1 min really.

Posted by T-Soma on Oct-12-2005 09:34:

Depends, with cds and or computer i like to loop and gradualy mix for up to 5 minutes. With vinyl it depends on the into of the song..

Oops: I ment intro of the song

Posted by wee_rooney on Oct-12-2005 10:17:

as you say, depends on the tracks.

i usually have a lot of differrent legnth mixes, anywhere from straight cuts to about 3-4 mins (mashups, etc). on average about 1.5 mins!

Posted by alefort on Oct-12-2005 13:58:

Usually around 1-1.5 minutes for me. The great thing is, when you know the tracks you are mixing really well, you can nail the mix perfectly to the second. In that case, it could be as little as 45 seconds to 3 minutes. Each track varies.

Posted by Zild on Oct-12-2005 14:47:

It really depends on the track. A lot of my tracks are in the 5-6 minute range for total length, so I have to mix those quicker and sometimes I'll even have to mix through a breakdown(don't try this live unless you know you'll nail it). Or I could have longer tracks like 10minutes in length where I can and do pull longer mixes. Or sometimes I'll want to stuff about 20 or so songs into an hour which dictates shorter quicker mixes.

Posted by lucas ss on Oct-12-2005 16:09:

i have no idea...as long as the tracks let me....breakdowns, off-key, etc.

Posted by Boomer187 on Oct-12-2005 16:14:

usually about 1.5 mins, I usually don't think about mixing in a new track (unless the songs woork this way) until there is about 2 mins left in the track. even then, a lot of my tracks have fast intros, so ya gotta be teh quick.

so between 1 and 2 mins.

Posted by mikebackwards on Oct-13-2005 21:54:

As long as it needs to, so it usually ranges from 1-5 minutes maybe even longer, but knowing that non of you have probably heard me play I don't expect ya'll to believe me.

Posted by MR STROKE on Oct-13-2005 22:38:

5 min??? you must play techno??i don't see how you could do that while playing trance, if not you must mix through breaks, and breakdowns....5 min is almost an entire record

Posted by richg101 on Oct-13-2005 23:33:

i mix from one track to another within 45secs to 1.5 mins. any longer and tracks start clashing. i would never want a tracks main part to be clashing with the other track. this would happen when mixing trance for more than 1.5mins imo.

Yea, since I mix primarily trance I find that you get any longer than this on most tracks and you start getting melody clashes (even in key) and it just sounds nappy and cluttered to me. Some songs provide you with an enormous intro so when I get those I use it to it's full advantage, so I'd say the max is about 2.5 min with 1-1.5 being what I normally do.

Posted by Inertia on Oct-15-2005 01:41:

anywhere between 0.05 seconds (cuts) to 3 minutes.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Oct-15-2005 01:56:

(uplifting/epic/hard trance): 50-75 seconds on average i think. haha, no way in hell i could be holding 5 min mixes, even if i wanted to

Posted by sym on Oct-15-2005 02:07:

as long as is appropriate for the mix?

Posted by Nemesis44 on Oct-15-2005 09:53:

I play some whole songs together and flip around with the filters.
An example would be this:

Classified Project - Spatial Enhancer and then mix in Sander Van Doorn - Punk'd

then I will usually mix in something else into those two.

So it really depends on what I'm doing.
Most of the time when I play Electro/House my mixes are quite quick.

Cheers
Nem

I find that my im usually bringing in the into of a track on the last 2 mins of playing track cos I stay around the 139-144bpm range. I play mostly trance (likes of above and beyond, avb, ferry etc). But f I play oldschool trance, 99-01 era, then I tend to mix with shorter transitions 1.5min mainly. I like to cut beats though when playin tech so I can be bringing a track in say 4mins into a 7min track. Really does depend

O/T.. im mashed hence badly worded post

Well, i can understand it

Posted by skip on Oct-15-2005 21:11:

i'd say it's generally over 2min for me. i suck at doing good sounding very quick mixes. they always sound too abrupt to me, dunno why is that though. i should really improve on that part of my mixing and my mixing in general too!

i find that too. Im still learning myself. Adjusting the EQ's help alot though.

Knowing your tracks is a majpr factor and cueing the tracks off at the right place. I tend to cue off from the first drumbeat and aim to fully transition by 64 or 128 bars. 64 bars is roughly 30 seconds, 128 bars is a minute.

Ive also in the past pulled off flukey mixes where the last beat of a track finishes when the beginning of the next track starts when ive ran outta time in a mix.. I get a nice feeling from it when I pull it off since i'll literally still be cueing the track up 3 or 4 beats from the end of the live track and i whack it in and hope for the best and it ends up sounding alright

Hmm...

Nuskool Breaks are usually quick mixes, maybe 45 secs tops.

Minimal tech is usually the length of the track as I typically use three decks, so basically the entire time is spent with at least 2 tracks playing.

Psy...depends on the track, usually I do full-on which is built for the quick mix to keep the energy up, but other forms of psy allow me to layer tracks, so anywhere from 30 secs to maybe 3 mins.

Anything else is typically between 1 to 2 minutes.

Oh and Drum and Bass falls into the quick mix category as well, usually 45 secs, tops.

Getting a bit defensive there!

What kind of stuff do you play? Got any mixes available online or anything?

Posted by Abhay on Oct-18-2005 18:13:

The best is to mix Ambient with standard trance .. That stuff is fun...

I've mixed an ambient track with a standard trance track, for about 2 minutes, without any looping. Otherwise, i don't hold mixes for much longer than about 30s - 1 minute. I keep sampling back and forth between tracks but, and try to use brakes etc. when mixing some tracks.

My beatmatching still needs work though, so it'll be a whie before i really start to go over 1 minute.
