Feedback/brainstorm thread for the new ID Contest
Since the concept of this comp has gone for a long time now, I figured it was time to hear you people out for changes or alterations to the structure of the comp that could improve it or add some variation. Personally, I find it hard to do so without alienating some potential contestants, but hopefully you people will have some ideas in mind.
Hit me.
More tables!
Maybe mix the tracks together, sort of like a miegamix effort. Will when I say mix I don't mean a big 4min crossfade between the 2. If you playing like a minute of each track, surley there is enough time to mix them. Get one of the producers on the forum to do it digitally in traktor/ableton, etc.
i think that the problem of a track with a remix gets 3 points while an original mix only getting 2 points is a problem, as potentially someone could id an extra 5 tunes or something but still end up behind someone. Im not convinced just giving out 3 points for a fully identified original mix is really the best solution but i cant think of any other method that could work.
I always wanted to do one and change the structure a bit, but Ill never win so Ill give my suggestions -
Give more points
Do it this way -
Easy IDs - Worth 10 points each overall. Have 10 of them. Simple tracks that everyone should get 80% of. Like Gouryella tracks, Silence (tiesto mix), Cafe del Mar, really easy ones.
Medium IDs - Worth 20 points each overall. Have 25 of them. Fairly ok ones, most people should get 30-50% of. Say 3rd Earth, Nu NRG tracks, things like that that you'd recognise, but would have to spend time digging to get their names.
Hard IDs - Worth 30 points each overall. Have 15 of them. Difficult tracks like obscure classics, old stuff, things that most people wouldnt recognise. People should only get 3 or 4 of them easily. Would be the ones that would seperate the winners. Challenging stuff.
Impossible IDs - Worth 50 points each overall. Have 2 of them. Only need a few, make these really really hard. Like go to an old obscure ambient psy album and pick the 6th track, like this -> http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/spt/spt1cd908.html . Make it so that if anyone can ID either of them, its a miracle. But itd be a challenge and everyone would still try to crack them.
Liveset IDs - Worth 15 or 20 points each. Have about 5 of them. Every liveset sounds different, and people who know their stuff can hear the sample, recognise the tune, and recognise the liveset the sample is taken from ( I frequently hear samples in the ID comps and get the name by recognising the liveset and getting the tracklist, not by recognising the track directly ). Points are given for the track name and the name/date/dj who played the liveset.
My 2 cents as to what Id do if I ever won an ID comp, and hell thats never gonna happen

i'd agree on the 2 points for originals vs 3 points for remixes. perhaps a way to fix that would be to only give a 3rd point if they label it original mix. if however they label a mix incorrectly, they are subtracted a point from their total score. i think that would stop people from labelling tracks original mix randomly...
I think the main problem with the ID contest is Genre's. If you get 3 different people to each choose 15 or 20 songs all from one genre then combine them into the ID contest we all see. So (for example) the first 20tracks will be trance, next 20 will be eurodance and the last 20 will be psy. Keep all scoring the same.
Gives a wider number of people a chance to put up a half decent score and with different genres each month it will stop the same people doing well each time.

Also no offence to the people who are winning, theyre doing great, but isnt it getting to the stage where the same people are winning them most of the time?
I know for a fact Ill do no good in Jans one , so it takes the fun out of it a bit
We need new people to win it.
and people whos competition I can win
I agree with trying to get new people do do it. Maybe we should have 2 id contests.
Newbie & Advanced for example. I'm shit at IDing some of the current contests but if there were 2 parallel contests running, and say, you could only enter 1 of them, then this may make it more fun for those of us who are shit at IDing.
I'd say the advanced one would carry on as it does already, and the easier one, more with the types of tunes that we all (most of us) actually buy. Whether it be a classic or a new release.
but i'll still just enter the advanced one because of ego and i'll still lose and never make a contest

i think some people aren't realising how difficult it is to gauge whether a track will be easy or hard to ID. Other than things like Delerium - Silence, Out Of The Blue, Urban Train etc the really really obvious ones which maybe amount to about 200 tunes max, then the rest of trance really does totally depend on each person as to whether they have heard it. Something like NuNRG - Casino that a PvD fan would think is ridiculously easy then someone who doesnt listen to PvD won't have a clue what it is.
With that in mind some of the ideas put forward here simply will not work.

what about adding 5 .jpgs of album covers as extras to ID
the tables Fundamental did are pretty cool, it gives extra status to get one ID nobody else got
should be kept going (if the ID contest maker has the patience of course)
what about having the next ID Contest made by the guy with more points that never did an ID Contest before, instead of the winner which has won it a trillion times already.. it's the only way me and others have a chance
or maybe.. special themed ID Contests. like, let's say a round of ID Contests per genre. one house contest, then one trance contest, then techno and so on. or by year, only 1997 tracks allowed, stuff like that
i dunno, just brainstorming really. what i know is that there's being more and more people participating on this, and they are fun, so even if the concept doesn't change it should be kept going..
by the way, anyone has the full list of winners? i could search a bit and compile one if there's interest

i suppose one option could be to take a few of the ideas mentioned and add them all together to make some of pub quiz type thing rather than just a set of 15 second samples.
for example someone mentioned having 10 pics of album covers that people have to guess, then maybe one round of 10 trance id's, 10 house id's etc, then maybe 10 questions about artists or alias'.
if done well could be very interesting, but if not done well could fall straight on its arse!

According to that table, the first ID contest I made was the most popular contest of all time, and the 2nd time I made a contest, was the second most popular of all time.
Perhaps I should start participating in these things again.
interesting facts:
- the edition that had a winner with the least points ever was also the contest with the most tracks to identify. the best was starglider, who only managed 35 points in 85 tracks (!!!) must have been an hard one..
- Sand Leaper was both the first to win it twice and to win it three times.

Thanks for the input so far guys.
As far as the hard/easy/medium ID scheme goes, I'm afraid it simply will not work in reality. Looking at it objectively, there really is no such thing as a "hard" or "easy" ID, as it all depends completely on the tastes of the respective contestant. Thus, doing it like that will undoubtably alienate some potential contestants, and that's what we're trying to avoid as much as possible, since the genre split among TAs is big enough as it is. A themed contest has been an idea I've tinkered with myself, but again, this might also put off people who started listening to EDM recently or just don't listen to trance/techno/whatever.
It seems like the core concept of the comp has little room for major changes without excluding some potential contestants. On the other hand, you could ask how far we're supposed to strain in order to please as many as possible...
For now, I think we'll have to settle for several lesser changes and amendments. A revamp of the remix point system and the additional tables are good examples of that, and I think I'll work with those when I put my next comp up.
Another one we could do is a Labels contest.
Positiva, Perfecto, Code Blue, Armada, Tsunami, Lost Language, Inferno, Bonzai, Black Hole, ITWT have all had enough release to have a contest each. I'm sure theres plenty more too but they're just off the top of my head.
