5 Grand To Spend On What......

Ok so at the end of November I will be getting some money to put forward to a complete DJ setup in my house.

It should be around the sum of 4500 euro or close to 5000 USD.

I want to know what you guys would do in terms of equiptment and such.

Most likely will be getting:
2 Turntables
2 CDJs
1 Mixer
Monitors
Amp
etc

What do you suggest?

Posted by CosmoKid on Oct-13-2005 21:10:

shit dude. good for you.

2 x tecnics m5g
2 x pioneer cdj 1000
figure out the mixer yourself, play with them, touch them, fondle them..
1 x Sony 7506 or Sennheiser sp25
1k left for active speakers - give a listen to what you like

Its kinda good but then again the money is from someone who past away lol so its great that I get 5g's but not great that someone died

Posted by richg101 on Oct-13-2005 23:40:

2* cdj800's

vestax 'good' mixer

some 'sennheiser!' headfones

then get a decent pro audio pc. with cubase/logic/protools/etc.. and a decent soundcard. an a virus polar... then you can make your own music insted of just playing others's music my main keyboard was passed down from a family friend who passed away... i feel good to be making use of his prized posesion and making music from my heart

should leave you with a few hundred to spend on cd-r's/ mp3 legal downloads/hhb circle 5 monitors.

id do something like that if i had that sort of cash!

Posted by MindsDesire on Oct-14-2005 04:05:

2 Technics SL1200/1210MK5
1 Mixer (whatever)
Some Headphones (try em on, see if they feel good)
Six-pack of beer

and $3,000 worth of records

That's what I'd do.

Posted by RJT on Oct-14-2005 04:46:

2 x Technics SL1200m5g
2 x Pioneer CDJ 1000mk2
1 x Allen & Heath Xone (62 or 92, it's your money)
1 x Pioneer HDJ1000 Headphones

I'm lost on speakers... I'd just buy some nice studio monitors for the time being, and spend any excess on money...

Condolences on your loss... but enjoy your gear man...

2 Turntables (Technics)
* Its absolutely your choice which model you get, because they for the most part, are all the same. I dont think you will ever use the +/-16% on the MK5's.

2 CDJs (Pioneers CDJ-1000)
* They are the industry standard, period.

1 Mixer (Allen & Heath)
* Again, absolutely your choice which to get, they are all great mixers

Monitors (Event TR-8XL)
* The best monitors for the money. And this saves you money on an amplifier because these monitors are biamplified.

Totals...
$850 (2 Techs MK2) + $1800 (2 CDJs) + $1500 (Xone:92 L) + $550 (TR-8XL) = $4750 + ship (@$4900)

Cheaper...
$850 (2 Techs MK2) + $1800 (2 CDJs) + $1000 (Xone:62 L) + $550 (TR-8XL) = $4250 + ship (@$4400)

Cheaperr...
$850 (2 Techs MK2) + $1100 (2 CDJ-800s) + $1500 (Xone:92 L) + $550 (TR-8XL) = $4050 + ship (@$4200)

Cheaperrr...
$850 (2 Techs MK2) + $1100 (2 CDJ-800s) + $1000 (Xone:62 L) + $550 (TR-8XL) = $3550 + ship (@$3700)

All of these are of course estimates and assumptions on price.

Exactly what he said, although I'd go with the Sony MDR-V700 for phones. Excellent quality, and they fixed the problem with them cracking.

We can all suggest heaphones, but its his ears that have to make the decision about what is good for him.

Yep. It'd probably be better for you to just like, make a list of everything you see here and head to your local shop, try out everything and see what you feel most comfortable with.

+1, but buy two pairs of headphones just in case, you know?

...... or.. I would probably buy....

2x CDJ-1000's
2x Tech12's
2x Sony 7506's
1 nice-ass mixer with built in midi controller (xone:92??)
1 nice-ass laptop with ableton

actually, i would seriously think about skipping the tech's and buying some of the expensive production proggies like Reason or FL... but only if that's your thing... meh

Too bad Sony MDR-V700s don't match up specs-wise with the Xone:92, ie: 700s sound horrible on Xone:92s.

Here's what I would get:
Allen & Heath Xone:92
2 Technics SL-1200MK5, or M5Gs (I'm not doing the math, I'm just making recommendations) w/ Ortofon Night Club-S
2 Pioneer CDJ-1000MKII
Ultrasone DJ-1 Pro headphones
As for speakers, go to a store and listen

When you're ready to buy, do it online. Great deals are to be had at places like agiprodj.com. Make sure you e-mail or call for prices though. Never pay list, or MAP!

Posted by MindsDesire on Oct-14-2005 10:52:

I'm still thinking he needs about $3,000 worth of vinyl..

Posted by Trance Nutter on Oct-14-2005 13:17:

2x Technics with Ortofon Nightclubs
If you've got a laptop, I'd skip the CDJs and get SSL. Otherwise 2x CDJ-1000)
Ecler Nuo 5
Sony 7506 headphones
Speakers - I dunno much about them, but I do like JBL Eons (maybe not really suitable as monitors though)

Posted by Nic on Oct-14-2005 15:14:

I would buy...

2 Technics 1200 mk2s with ortofon carts
HD-25 headphones
ecler nuo4 mixer
15" powerbook with ableton live
m-audio furewire 410 soundcard
some decent powered monitors (bx5s are great for small spaces, something better for larger spaces)
and pleanty of records!

but thats just me

Evidence plz.

And I'm not trying to stick up for those Phones as I too think they suck... just wanna know what the deal is...

Posted by InterMilan31 on Oct-14-2005 17:54:

Ok so I have some headphones already and the vinly is covered got about eh 500/600 records.

My current set up is:
2 Technics M5G
2 Pioneer CDJ 1000MK2
1 Pioneer DJM-600
Those Sony headphones dont know the model...the ones everyone has if they have Sony
2 Sony Bookself Speakers
1 Pioneer Amp

^What Im looking to do is keep the same turntables, same CDJ's, new mixer maybe a Xone:92 or something, Sony same. New speakers....my second pair of the bookself cuz I blew out the previous ones(they're cheap though). Same amp or better.

Ill most likely go over 5grand but I can go over a little I could probably afford another grand or 2 but be broke but its no problem lol. I really want to build a custom DJ stand. I have a friend that can build me one for 200 bucks.

So in the end Im thinking:

2 Technics M5G
2 Pioneer CDJ 1000mk2
1 Xone:92
Sony Headphones(i can also just take them from my other place save money there)
Maybe some Blueroom or Bluepod speakers (forget the exact model but featured in DJ Mag 4 months ago)
Amp....
DJ Stand
Mac with ProTools/Cubase/Reason/etc(I already have this)

everyone thought you were starting from scratch! LOL

you already have the best TTs and CDJs on the market.

upgrade your mixer
buy a laptop with ableton
build a dj stand
buy powered monitors and buy speakers
send me the rest of the cash to catch up to you.

Upgrade the mixer... atleast Xone:92 (Linear or Rotary is at your discretion)

Heaphones is your choice.

Upgrade the monitors... get Event TR-8XL or Mackie HR-824 or if you really want to go up, Event SPN-8. You dont need amp's with any of these monitors since they all have amp's built in.

As for getting a laptop... you might want to hold off until next year, Apple is going to be making new laptops with new Intel CPU's, and they are supposed to be unbelieveable. If youre impatient, go for a Powerbook with Ableton.

5k.holy shit

Posted by InterMilan31 on Oct-15-2005 05:14:

Haha no Im kinda like in the phase between bedroom -> local club DJ since I play in Switzerland and Italy about 20 times a year...

I have a Powerbook G4 but need to get some more HD space....

Yeah thinking of the XONE:92 one of the clubs I play at has that and I love it. I was going to get the DJM-1000 but its a long story(ebayscam)

OK. Check the manual for the Xone:92. Now check the specs on the Sony MDR-V700DJ. Notice any discrepencies? If you don't believe the specs, then attach some 700s to a Xone:92 and listen to the craptacular sound. For more evidence, check out the Xone DJ Forums.

Anyway, InterMilan, if you do get a Xone:92, you're gonna have to replace those Sonys. ANY of the other top brands are compatible (Pioneer, Technics, Sennheiser, Ultrasone).

Posted by Joost on Oct-15-2005 18:58:

Funny that people outside of Europe (or Holland) still believe Technics is the best TT there is

Why?

And joost which are the best then....

Posted by skip on Oct-15-2005 21:50:

if i had 5 grand to blow on dj gear i'd go with:

3x Pioneer CDJ-1000 mk2
1x Allen & Heath Xone:92 Rotary
and some good powered monitors and that's prolly it, because i already have good headphones, which i don't feel the need to upgrade. but i don't have any money to upgrade, so i'll just cope with my 2x cdj-100s and djm-300s!

i'd like to have that 5000 bucks too!
