1999

*sigh*

such a great time for trance. i just finished listening to ferry at innercity from 99. sooo many memories. such an innocent sound to trance then. seemed to me to be a bit more playful. i love the sound of todays but i kinda miss the one hit bass. the "buh" sound after every kick. hah thats fun to listen to now.

I just posted in a different forum asking what people's favourite live sets were, and an overwhelming majority of them were from 1999. I guess it was a high point.

Common knowledge

Posted by spc on Oct-17-2005 07:47:

rather it SHOULD be common knowledge. some people new to the trance scene will be like paul oaken-WHO? i introduced some of the livesets o my friends (who are mainly house junkies) and they were blown away by it

Posted by KaTaKaLyZmyK on Oct-17-2005 07:50:

this is making me think back to tunnel trance force, had every live set, till my HD corrupted and i lost 1/2 my music

Posted by Sykonee on Oct-17-2005 17:45:

Sykonee sees an innocent looking box. Curious as to what's inside it, he opens it up. It's empty, but a voice seems to emmenate from the box.

1995 was better.

haha thats quite the image. thinking of a year as a thing. not only that but shitting on another.... you get the idea. funny right?

Posted by Zombie0915 on Oct-17-2005 20:56:

I was 15 in 1999, freshman year of high school, was not even remotely interested in music, not even aware of the wide world of EDM out there.

2000, sophmore year, the year of napster, was when I started getting into this, it wasnt until I was 17 that I knew enough about the music to realize that I was a trance addict and then found this place. I think the first significant thing I experienced the was the release of "Out there and Back" and all the "OMFG!" posts about it(before I had actually registered). Now that I know the release dates of so many of the songs that I enjoyed I realize that a lot of them are from this 1999 era.

I dont see very many OMFGIDIE posts anymore, is it because the catch phrase got old or because no more songs are OMFGworthy? I really miss that, somebody would come home from a party and get all hyped about some song they heard and they would post about it, then 15 other people would also agree that the song made them "die".

But all we do is complain now, not that there wasnt any complaining back when people were all "omfgidie" but it was tolerable because there were still people who were excited about the music who also posted.

if you hear a sick song, post about it, grrr

do yous guys remember that time that 1996 punch 1998 straight in the face and busted old 98's teeth out? damn 96 fucked him up

go listen to PvD

saying 1999 was best for epic supersaw trance would probably cause less conflict

You started listening to trance back then, didn't you?

heh.

It's true what they say: you never forget the first time you're exposed to something. Law of diminishing returns states that it takes twice as hard to get the same amount of enjoyment through subsequent exposure. It's like riding on a roller coaster. The first time is the most exhillarating. The 50th time...not so much.

The stupid thing about this is after 50 rides or so, you're complaining that the first ride was the best....when it's exact same roller coaster!

My advice: GET OFF. Try another ride.

I was about to say something to this affect but obviously Ishkur beat me to it. I started listening to trance around 1992/1993 so obviously for me, the best sets are from around that period

Point is, this discussion isn't really about what year was the best (in the short lifespan of trance), but rather about when you started listening to it.

lol, true.

2003 and 2004 were probably equally if not more enjoyable for me since that was when i started clubbing/taking drugs respectively. i guess the same principle applies though... it's something new each time. still got a few more years on the clock for me i think.

I don't think you can generalize that statement for everyone. I started listening to trance in '98/'99. Heard a lot of awesome productions and livesets in that year and the following years, but I still love trance as much as I did in "my early years". Best liveset : Tiesto In Concert 2004 (BE). Moderation is the key.

This is why Stray Dog - Mirror is my favorite track of all time. Such a simple innocent melody that I just can't get enough of.

Strange that I started listening to electronic music properly in 2000, and yet I find the best era for trance and it's ilk was 1996, and the best era for electronic music was 1988-1994.

You're a very... unique individual.

I started really listening to EDM a year ago and I think that there will never be years like 98 and 99 again.

Posted by Zinger on Oct-18-2005 20:03:

I started clubbing in 2000, but my cousin started around 97. I used to go with him in those days here and there. Everyone i speak to today who was in the scene back in 98-99 says those are the glory years. But for me, my glory years are now. Let's stop bitching about that year being better than that year and enjoy thi year and the next because in 10 years they will all be your best years. Did that make sense?

Posted by sstranger1 on Oct-18-2005 20:26:

Man I wish I was into trance back then, I really got into the scene 2 years ago; going to the clubs, listening to the music, seeing the big name djs, etc. Around that time, I was into the synthpop/ industrial scene. Nowadays trance is all I listen to. I got some sets from 1999 or so, I'll check it out but it's not going to bring memories to me like it does to some of you guys.

Posted by KaTaKaLyZmyK on Oct-21-2005 01:44:

i think the argument is not witch year between 95 and 99 is the best year but the years when the trance scean really flourished and then kinda slid a lil... but i still think tere is alot of good new talent out there (i.e. mikey mike... good shit dood) and if i where a promoter and it where up to me i woulkd throw a party.... invite Oakenfold to throw down an oldschool set, all trance from 95-99 and then to top it off have alpha zone come down and thrw down a VS match with his new school style... mixing all old tracks with new production talent... i may be the only one in the world who who like to see it, but i STILL think it would be a SICK vibe
