Isolating Vocals

I know many post questions here about isolating vocals from a favorite track of theirs , i looked into it and this is what i found.

I have not used it yet but i thought i would post it here for those interested.

The smarter thing to do would have been to test it first before putting your name to it..

Seriously.. no company will ever make a "magic program" that will get good enough results..

The only decent way to get vocals from a song is if you can get a hold of the instrumental. Im not sure how it works with instrumentals that have been recorded dif to the full mix.
If you know about wave forms its quite simple to figure out but im sure most producers would know of this.

Your talking about "phase cancellation" but even this is not perfect.. the idea is if you have one version with just the instruments only and you play it out of phase with the vocal mix... all the instruments will cancel each other out leaving you with the vocal..

Now saying for arguements sake you find a perfect instrumental that is exactly like the vocal mix but without the vocals. you will still find the two mixes were mixed and mastered differently.. so you will end up with the vocals and traces of the effects like compression/reverb/EQ that were slightly different between the two.

I have a few accapellas like this and I doubt its quite good enough for a professional remix.. fine for home use thou.

Posted by Derivative on Oct-19-2005 17:39:

is not that they are mixed and mastered differently. its to do with any kind of phase modulation effects that are (probably) on the vocals. that is any delay based effect (delay, phasing, flanging, chorusing etc) and reverb. because they put the vocal part out of phase to varying degrees. some of which vary over time (a sweep caused by phase shifting for instance). destructive phasing only occurs when 2 instances of the same sounds at the same time (with the same frequency spread and harmonic series) occur in anti phase.

but yea. you are right about it working rarely. it usually sounds crap. unless you are lucky to get a fairly or completely dry vocal (highly unlikely).

to the OP: stay away from gimmicky $25 apps that claim to do stuff like this successfully.

Posted by T-Soma on Oct-20-2005 07:28:

Could you make the destructive phasing more affective by EQing? Anytips on using this technique?

And I thought those kinda guys come only the my forum and spam it around...now I see it's a worldwide problem...bah!

About the vocal part, I've seen many "Vocal Removers" but I've known zero that actaully did the work, the best way is to get your hand on the accapella (which most of the time is the hardest way)...
Like Analog Artisan said, Phase Cancellation is a good way though most (like 95% I believe) of the tracks that get released with an Instrumental are usually Mixed and Mastered again to fill up the Freq' gap that was caused by removing the vocal.
