Be Cool! Can trance be considered underground music yet? or just popular music?

I was talking with some friends and we start thinking about this...

I read trance in 99 was so pop, with lots of parties and radios... etc, everybody wanted know trance...
today, there are only some popular parties like sensation where trance is there too, with house and other more commercial music...
the most famous djs are turning into the more commercial scene but we know there are underground artists too...

so, somebody that lived 99 (maybe before) and continue in trance music, can explain it to me and other people that have the same question?

imo, trance is not more sooo underground is almost reaching the popular music status... techno is undergound yet...

sorry if I"m wrong, im ready to change my oppinion if somebody explain it to me...

Trance music and music in general will always contains a part of commercial and a part of underground...by definition, commercial part sucks, and underground rocks. In my opinion, you can't really know if trance is more commercial or more underground : both parts will always exist.

Trance or EDM is more popular now then the early 90s...at least in Canada. For the longest time it was considered underground music however, now it's in the clubs and not some random warehouse where you need to call a number to find a location to get a map to get to the warehouse

Well, psy trance can certainly still be considered underground in most parts of the world.

Posted by medinaM5 on Oct-20-2005 18:13:

i'd say it depends on where you live...around here, rap and rock is the in thing, and electronic music is referred to as "techno bullshit"

Posted by canadian didjer on Oct-20-2005 18:18:

hey look a bc psy trance fan.... heh i'm from the island

anyway... the trance scene depends a whole lot on where you are... for us in Canada... forget it... but in like maybe... Germany or england or goa chances are... it's huge. generally... though... the best trance is in the underground scene... main stream kinda sucks... you get guys like bob miles and sammy screwin everything up for new trancers...

99.9% of people I meet in person have never heard the word 'trance' in their entire lives. I'd say that makes it underground enough.

didnt u post on saying how much you loved armin?!

Armin (not equals) underground

it ain't underground...is just unknown at all

in mexico...whatever genre of dance music is...they call it "punchis-punchis"

they don't say "ohh...it's trance" or "house"...don't know about the difference between them

mexicans are whoring psy trance lately...9 out of 10 raves are about psy trance...and they still call it underground...but in my opinion

"yeah...right"

That is 100% true...
Their like "is that like that gay techno crap"

Fucking idiots.

Posted by Subtle on Oct-20-2005 21:41:

the good trance tracks are still underground

but generally speaking, progressive house is the "new" trance

Posted by Kooshtie on Oct-20-2005 22:08:

trance = mainstream EDM

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Oct-20-2005 22:17:

Euro is much more mainstream than Trance. At least here. I'd even say House is more mainstream.

most defenatly, dnb is pretty underground, well not underground mayb just a really aquired taste , and no1 in my area respects breaks enough unless its icey who imo is jsut a bunch of hype

Posted by The 3am Junkie on Oct-21-2005 04:04:

haha trance is pretty mainstream here. On the contrary to Mexico, Psy-Trance is still quite underground around here. I think Latin America is experiencing what the U.K. experienced back in 1999 or so.

I don't think most people can tell what the difference between techno and trance is, in the states anyways. When they do, then i'll know it's mainstreme.

funniest encounter ive had with idiots like that was when a a girl asked a friend of mine to "turn off his homo beats"

In Europe, trance has become very commertional and I can say that there are more trance/house/EDM parties than any others.

Posted by halexander837 on Oct-21-2005 16:30:

When i tell people that trance is what i listen to, they go "what's that?"

i tell them it's dance and techno combined. man is that embarrasing

You should take a trip south(or maybe even north) for a coupla hours, over here you have to work pretty hard to find anything that isn't Breaks or DnB. Granted those musics arent quite popular in status but they are almost the only EDM parties to be found. I have all sortsa friends who understand when I tell them I like trance music(although alot of them think that means ATB and Paul Oakenfold, or Zombie Nation), It wasnt quite that way when I was in high school, but now days it seems that everybody has at least 1 EDM cd that they like or that one of their Dj friends gave them or whatever. It seems that everybody is at least familair with a couple EDM musicians and knows what category they go in, at least all the people I have been meeting recently that is, but maybe that is only because I am meeting most of my friends in electronics classes and out at parties.

I dont think it is underground, nor do I think it is popular, it seems to fall somewhere in between, like a subculture that has been well established but not necessarily famous(like goths, something you dont see every day but that alot of people are aware of)

Posted by wick on Oct-21-2005 23:02:

in aus. trance i guess is still underground.. the big raves/parties or wateva u wanna call them get a huge turn out. usually by a large commercial crowd.. but i doubt the commercial crowd even understands what the difference is between trance/techno. they all seem to think its the same.
no one here that is not in the scene here has heard of tiesto or armin. the majority of people here listen to RnB, hip hop and rock.. 95% of the people i meet anywhere have something against trance music, its like the music has offended them in some way.. i really dont understand.. they go out of their way sometimes to make it known how much they 'hate' trance music.. cmon people its just music relax

destiny in toronto had a good scene going till about 2001... sorry to say.. after that government became the only soucre... and no one in there right mind would wanna go to that thug infested dirt hole just to hear some good djs... not if there looking for the pure vibe that exsisted in ealier years... no even toronto has lost its trance... since im a dj myself.. i moved to niagaras falls (where im sad to say but jungle and house rieghns supream here too) not that i dont like the music... theres always track in every genre (electronic and non electronic alike) that i will always enjoy.. but trance is where my heart it at, it was my first love.. and last love... so im hopinh NYC gots a scene cuz thats the most viable option if i ever wanna spin in front of a crowd bigger the 100 ppl

Posted by 303 on Oct-22-2005 07:52:
