Using Loops

Hi,

I have pruchased sample cd's and some loops are awesome. I have tried my best to interperate these loops my self but failing for a few weeks now. Percussion is a weak point for me in my music and i think i may just resolve to using these royalty free loops. I have followed the mr mystery percussion tutorial too and i am good at simple but i struggle with perc mostly... What are your views?

theres nothing wrong with using royalty free loops in your productions.

but what you do with them and how you use them says alot about the producer thats flipping them.

just be aware that if you get into the habit of using loops wholesale you are missing out on the art of programming grooves and breaks from scratch. you are missing out on the art of quantising grooves and 'swing.' and you are missing out on more gritting of teeth and going through more months of trying to dissect a sound and get it to sound the way you want it to. because believe it or not, its good for you in the end. and if you stick with it long enough you will get there in the end. it also shows you have the guts and the character to stick out a tough period and really try to work through it to get the desired result.

if you go on forums like dogs on acid they will sample everything there. if you want to sound like locust. they will tell you to sample it. and there is absolutely nothing wrong in that. some of them will tell you its important to mix things up and put in the work to twist that loop or sample into your own sounds.

but at the same time its not that i would ever want to sound like locust. its that i would want to see how that song was made, how lots of simple things come together to make a complex whole. i dont care about sounding like locust. i just care about what i can learn from how locust is made. and hopefully apply some of the same processes into my work and my style of producing.

and i wont find any of that out by looping it in one of my tunes.

its the same idea as using synth presets. using them is fine. but if you do so because you dont know how to make those sounds, then you will NEVER know how to make those sounds. the first thing i do when i hear a preset i like is to look at how its made and see if i can make something like it from scratch. i think in the end this can only be good for me because im learning all the time.

I agree. There's nothing morally objectionable about using loops, but it reflects on your attitude as a producer.

Are you someone who works as hard as necessary to create the right sound, or do you take shortcuts (potentially at the expense of originality)?

Agreed with all above.

I wont class myself as a bad producer and yes i admit it i still have a lot to learn. Synths, basses etc are fine, im good with that but the percussion side does let me down. Theres nothing more i would like to learn about complex percussion skills, id kick arse then...

Simple percussion is fine, my claps and open hats are powerful. Closed hats are fine thatz where i stumble. I tend to put this horrible wood sound into the layers and it eventually sounds awful. I guess i am missing something or what samples to use. I have good one shot sample cds and it makes me crazy when i know these samples can make these loops but how?

pre made loops in my case never seem to work or very rarely. The reason is that most of the time they are of incorrect notes and dont fit into my composition. I rather create everything from scratch.
