Why do people call everything techno?
Everything that features electronic elements is called techno. I just saw a lot idiots say about the new Mike Oldfield "I hate all that techno on it". I've seen The Chemical Brothers being called techno.
WTF IS UP WITH THIS? Is there some story behind everything being called techno by the general Joe?
cus keyboards are related to TECHNOlogy
at least, thats what tiesto told me
people do it cos they know it pisses you off

It's just a chain reaction. One person says it, everybody hears it, and after awhile everybody knows the term 'techno'. On the other hand, no one knows the terms "house", "trance", "electro", etc, so when they hear anything remotely similar with electronic elements in it, they call it techno because it's the only word that they know.
cause if you tell somone u listen to house trance or anything electronica related they wont know what it is.. but once u say u listen to techno they will be all oh ya thats kinda like alice deejay huh??

gwrmarines I love your sig, she's d@ bomb!

because in the past, genres weren't really divided, nobody said "trance", few said "house, so everyone said "techno". and it stuck for the mainstream.
call it Tecmo
"what ya listenin to?"
"tecmo."
"you mean techno?"
"no, TECMO, stupid."
"i've never heard of tecmo music before"
"that's because you're an ignorant retard."
i think its stupid when ppl get bent out of shape when a noob calls it techno.
its like saying to friend
"thats slamming rock tune your listening to"
and he freaks out
"its post modern alternative punk you dumb bitch"
Most EDM in the very early nineties was called techno, particularly groups that broke the mainstream, such as Orbital, Underworld, and The Prodigy. In addition to "house" never gaining pop-culture parlance, EDM diversified in a dozen different genre directions since the early-nineties "techno" breakout, and popular terminology never bothered to catch up (except for the manufactured "electronica" labeling of Big Beat and Chemical Breaks). Trance began to reach mainstream use after 99, but didn't entrench itself anything like "techno" did.
Ugh, This battle is never ending, I just gave up trying to explain to those that call everything Techno. I just say "uh-huh" then walk away.

I'm ignorant about classifications of other music, but I can identify the difference between 5 types of trance, house, hardcore, and other shite

it's just like saying "rock" or "rap" (it's a collective name for a certain type of music)
people that aren't familiar with EDM have no clue what the subgenres are, let alone how to distinguish one from another.
"tv"
before i didn't care when people called it techno even if it was house or trance, but now since i listen to techno more, i feel the need to correct them. it's an insult to call trance techno.
