need your help- Doing a research paper on paul van dyk

ok just to start off, if u came to this thread for some immature bashing, go somewhere else please. Ok, i am doing a research paper on paul van dyk and we have to try and answer a question with our research. I am trying to choose between two questions- "Is pvd the father of trance" , "Did pvd help bring trance into the spotlight and make it famous?" IF my fellow ta members who love vandit can help me with anything then it will be much appreciated. Thanks for any help and heck with the people who came here just to make your immature remarks just to make me mad.

PVD isn't the father of trance by any definition. However, he did play one of the biggest roles in popularising the style.

First answer another question if you want to address your first question because otherwise you will go lost in between a large number of pitfalls: what is trance, when did it start and how did it evolve over time?

Your second question isn't that dangerous... you can answer it without having problems with the more general aspects of trance

Posted by neo geo on Oct-24-2005 16:04:

yeah thats what i figured, i think the second question is more true and can be answered much easier. I think im going with that, did pvd help make trance famous and put it on the map. Ok , if any people can give me any links to any sites that would be very helpful. I know to look on his site and such and i have also found several other sites with great info on him , but i wish i had some magazines with articles on him and things of that nature. If i can find any specific magazines with good articles on him then i will try and order back issues of the magazine. If anyone here knows of any specific magazines with good articles on pvd then give me the name of the magazine and the issue # and year and etc. Thanks a lot for any help!

Hello!

Or, do u think it would be easier to answer the question, "is he the world's most famous dj?"

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-24-2005 16:44:

No it wouldn't.

Again a question full with pitfalls: what is famous, how do you define "most famous" and who determines that? Forget it...

Posted by WingDing on Oct-24-2005 23:15:

is pvd the prettiest DJ?

Posted by eye_03 on Oct-24-2005 23:38:

well, you could pad your essay with stuff like a short biography of PvD and then go on to list his major songs like his remix of humate-love stimulation and maybe his album 45rpm and stuff like that

also you could possibly ramble on about the internet and such and how it has made trance music more acessiable and more popular, therefor increasing PvD's status...

meh, there are some basic ideas?

Could'nt said it any better myself

Posted by apri_peel on Oct-24-2005 23:58:

i'd go with the second question
it is more concrete and fairly narrowed down
make sure to also include any critique you may find on pvd, not just the great things he's done for trance. it's important to show that you're being critical in your essay, not just fanatical. talk about what he has not done, what he could have done differently and what has he done wrong. what were his ups and downs.

pvd definately isnt the father of trance, but he did play an important role in helping it grow to what the music is today. look at his interaction with other djs, what has he said about tiesto, oakenfold, sasha and the new guys like jon o'bir, niklas harding, andy moor.

i believe pvd writes a monthly column in mixmag, but i dont know if that would help you out much. try mixmag and djmag websites, they might have stuff archived on him. actually there was an article on pvd in the august issue of mixmag but i think it was a global gathering special of some sort that they were running on erick morillo, pvd, sasha and karl hyde. check it out nonetheless. if you absolutely cant find the issue anywhere, i've got it, drop me a pm, i'll take a photo of the page or something or scan it, or type it out if i'm really bored hehe

one of the most important elements in any paper is being critical about your topic and demonstrate your objectivity on the subject even if you're trying to argue a certain point. i can see that getting lost when you're writing about something or someone you're really passionate about.

hope this helps

It wouldn't. He just talks about where he's played recently, what's coming up and what tracks he's playing.

The father of Trance, in my opinion is Paul Oakenfold Maybe this interview might help you, however it's in Spanish http://www.laprensagrafica.com/extr...a/xonica104.asp

Posted by neo geo on Oct-25-2005 04:21:

well i dont know if the question im trying to answer necessarily has to be true or not. In my opinion he is damn close to being the worlds most famous dj since he has been voted number 1 dj several times and due to his increased popularity. Hell even my 53 year old teacher knew who he is and told me he was excited to read my paper on him. Well any help anyone gives me is very much appreciated. Thanks fellow ta's

This might help; Just some info on Trance in general.

recently i've lost the Vandit faith but listening to the above set again i realized why i was such a huge fan of pvd in the first place. Pvd is first and foremost a producer, and he has a massive amount of productions and remixes that distinctly define his 'sound'. Can i ask you? Would any other top trance dj (tiesto, armin, ferry, ) be able to hold his own in a set comprised of just their own stuff? How about a Ferry plays ferry (too many diff sounds)? How about a Tiesto plays Tiesto (would compete but not as solid a lineup as pvd's)? Armin's productions are mediocre/forgettable (his remixes are solid) and is currently mainly popular for his passion in his asot radio show (much respect..esp for his TA no.1 ranking).

In the end, Pvd has a solid body of work over his career that set him above his peers. Recently his sound has waned (Reflections and POD2->blech!), but over the course of his career he has few peers.

OTAB will forever be the genre defining album that paved the way to legitimize trance.

This is a pretty daft pro-PVD argument. You are essentially saying "All PVD's stuff sounds the same and, unlike Ferry, he doesn't experiment".

This is just bollocks.

Before you flame off, I am a fan of PVD (Seven Ways is the best trance artist album I've ever heard) and he has churned out quality productions for well over a decade, but what you are saying here is just fanboy hyperbole.

yeah! finally someone who knows their stuff.

Posted by Keo_Nade on Oct-26-2005 00:41:

NOT the father. but HUGE in making it popular. Reflections was Grammy nominated.

Posted by neo geo on Oct-26-2005 03:45:

Hello!

well i think im going to talk with my teacher about it. I dont know if the question you have to answer has to be true. Maybe i will go with is he the most popular dj.

Posted by WingDing on Oct-26-2005 04:50:

let's get real here. your teacher has no idea who PVD is and no idea what Trance is. therefore it's highly likely that nothing you write HAS to be true, as the teacher wouldn't be the wiser either way.

Posted by neo geo on Oct-26-2005 05:25:

Hello!

on the contrary, when i told him i wanted to do my paper on a person he asked who and when i said pvd he said "oh the german electronic producer", i was like damn.
