Gauging Interest in Another Electronic Radio Broadcast

All of you are familiar with EDMSS and ASOT that air weekly on WREK 91.1 FM oe online at wrek.org(if not you should tune in). Nate has has a surge of people who want more electronica broadcasted on the radio, and the opportinity has come forth to have another weekly show. Thats where I come in. I will be pitching an idea for a new show to the station manager in the near future, but I want to know what people would like to hear. Here are some suggestions I have that you can comment on. We are talking about a 2hr time slot on a weekday from 12am-2am.

1) Mixed sets vs playing standalone tracks(like di.fm, or satellite radio)
2) Highlighting the newest that dance music has to offer each week(assuming we can get promo material from record labels/local djs)
3) What genres to focus on?(we were thinking half house half trance)
4) Other elements of the show that would add uniqueness-- eg. discussing new tracks, possibly giving reviews on new albums, technical reviews on equipment, an 'ask the dj' section, an 'events' section.

We will definitely try and have dj's in the studio every week, or mix ourselves, but we want to give it another dimension with the talking aspect.

Thanks,
Alok

Here is the ideal show... you spotlight local djs playing sets of whatever with no talking and NO genre focus....
Basically, whoever spins whatever... no limits and no talking..... that way, we hear nothing but music.... people who wanna know track names can just call into the station and get the name....
This way, we get unfiltered, unfeathered spotlight mixes of local talent... it doesn't get any better than that... hear your local djs bring their best... an Atlanta Essential Mix, so to speak.
I mean, their is the option of having the DJ announce every few minutes, what he just spun, but i think it's better to just publish a tracklist and let their be no talking other than to say hello and goodbye...Also, let their be an online replay of the set for at least a week, so people who missed it, can tune in....

Anyway, that's my take...

that's kinda more or less what nate is doing right now tho, i think he's looking for something new. the talking is something that can get people NOT so familiar with electronica, more involved, and more educated.

i think talking more about the events is definitely a good idea. maybe you could have a handfull of people in there, talking about future events, events that just went by (like give reviews on them, talk about the dj, the club, or whatever), i think one of your goals should definitely be to get more people into the CLUBS, to see what it's all about first hand.

i definitely like the idea of talking about new releases of cds and tracks too. i think mix sets are GREAT, but that's kinda what nate is doing, if you could get your hands on good promo material, i certainly think people would enjoy listening to individual tracks, and then maybe talk some about them

maybe each week, you could talk about a particular artist (new or old). talk about what genre they spin, what the person is doing for the scene, anything special techniques they use spinning, and play some singles that either they've produced, are on a new cd or something, or maybe that reflect a similar genre and style

my $.02

I agree, kind of like a discussion and education program for all the n00bs out there like Mario and Matt!!! Most asked question I get about EDM from a n00b, "What is Trance and why is that different then Techno." It would be nice to have a place that can do some outreach about the music and the artist to the public. Maybe even highlight the artist that is coming to town and let the people know what to expect from them, play some mixes and tracks from them.

That is my $.03... (more then Gavin because I am rich BEEOCH!!!)

Yea, Gavin, I see your point... I had forgotten that Tongey always gives a brief sum up at the beginning of the Essential Mix of what the artist is up to and what they're contributing to the scene... So, I like that idea of kinda discussing what's going on with whoever is spinning...

But, I really think that most people that are tuning in are just tuning in to listen to music... Most are gonna be naieve about most details regarding the music and the scene...They're either gonna get in the groove or change the station, so the less talking, the better...
I know Nate is already kinda doing this, but it never hurts to have to shows that are similar... Locals are the only ones we have to work with, for the most part....

I just love the Essential Mix and the format of the whole show... I think that's why it's so popular cause it gives great access to all genres, gives some information about the artist, and a tracklist and replay on the website...

I mean, this new show could try and break new ground and act as an all access pass show to the local scene and do party reports, interviews.... I wish we could have a show that could broadcast live from the clubs or do replays of the major headliners' sets..but, we all know that's never gonna happen...lol

Thats the spirit! I have always thought trying to reach a student (aged) population is excellent. Unfortunately, I dont believe I have been able to do this yet. You're right, club reviews, local scene info, a basic "How-to" guide for the scene and electronica partying is what could draw many would-be hip-hoppers into our scene.

This age group is at a pivotal time, when most are just starting to define their clubbing tastes (turning 21). Reaching this demographic could be an extremely powerful (and marketable) device.

Thumbs up aweomse idea

This sounds like an awesome idea. Getting more electronic music on the airwaves is something that needs to be done. Nate does a badass job with EDM Soundsystems on GT's WREK, along with the people over there at Album 88. The more we can expose people to the music the better. Alok you are a sexy man, especially when you are DJ'ing.
