The list of djs using software to mix sets

I feel the need for a list to be compiled of djs that are now using software like Ableton to make sets, be it live, or merely radio streamed. Feel free to add if you like, and bash if you think this has been done far too many times.

Armin van Buuren - Ableton for ASOT shows
Paul van Dyk - Ableton for some livesets, don't know about his weekly show on Fritz, but probably
James Zabiela - began using Ableton as heard on the Utilities EP
Richie Hawtin - pwnx0rz with Ableton
Sasha - He's probably the most vocal user of Ableton coupled with his MAVEN controller
Tiesto - uses MS paint to draw pictures of flowers while he puts on a randomized mix of his Just Be compilation.
Mike Foyle - I think he's started using Ableton, though I'm not sure about for live sets or streamed shows
BT - uses Ableton for his "laptop symphonies".

thats a dumb topic.
just write everybody who is a big name now.

only poor djs still use cheap turntables.

Ferry Corsten. He hasn't used Ableton and said he doesn't plan on it any time soon. He is neither poor and he's a "big name dj".

Posted by robospanker on Oct-27-2005 14:00:

i guess he is acting "old school". but soon he will have to move on.

Posted by Orko on Oct-27-2005 14:02:

ADD:

Blank & Jones (seen them use it live)
Gabriel & Dresden (seen pics of them using it)

both use a laptop for lives sets. For G&D i think its Dave dresden that actually uses it. That could be wrong though

But i dont know what software they use.

John Digweed is merely experimenting at this point I believe, and despite my Tiesto joke, he is not using Ableton yet either. I haven't heard anything from Sander Kleinenberg, Marco V, or people of the like.

Saw Ferry and AvB this year. Neither seemed to have a laptop in site around the dj booth.

Posted by Toufas on Oct-27-2005 14:08:

both g&d , not only dave.
but is ableton the "devil" in this forum now?

Posted by robospanker on Oct-27-2005 14:09:

i dont know why trance djs will move to softwere.
every person educated about the djs business knows that trance is the esiest of all EDM to play on turntables.
you play one tune for 3 or so munute and you put the next one.

John Digweed if you didnt know had a Mix Cd for Fabric and it was full of minimal tech and house.
It was mixed by a softwere.

Ridiculous statement. Everyone knows that buying vinyl is perhaps 100x more expenisive to purchase than downloading mp3's, which are used for other such mixing software. And you can only play vinyl on "cheap Turntables".. which still are well over 1grand for the real deal (Techs).

Posted by robospanker on Oct-27-2005 15:27:

face it people !
we are in 21st centuary.
we will have robot djs at some point and you still talk about turntables which came from the 80s.

Dude, if you are paying over a grand for 1200's, you are getting ripped the FUCK off!

Not at all. We're talking Canadian $$. Even Mk2's are roughly $600 each. 1+1 = ??$$

Now.. if u want to get the Technics: SL-1210M5G .. that'll be around $800/table.

and with our taxes... u'll easily spend over $1000 on 1 of those tables alone.

Saying that new innovation, and new technology is the wave of the future... is something absolutely and totally different than saying that all dj's who use tables are poor. U are extremely wrong about that bud!

On another note. who cares if it was made in the 80"s. lol that's ridiculous that u would say that. Not all things new are the best anyways... we all know that. The "OLD" things are usually the most reliable. Plus it's standard at almost every club. Not every club will provide u with a laptop and hub for your digital hardware. At least not the clubs i've spun at. They might have a few cables in case... but they usually expect you to bring your own stuff. Where as, like I've already stated, almost every club has tables for u to use.

no we won't
cause it would be boring
the only thing they could do is beatmatch perfectly...
and robots can't think for themselves

newer doesn't always mean it's better... it also doesn't mean the older has to phase out...

Stilez you took the words right out my mouth

Posted by beema on Oct-27-2005 16:49:

oh, Canadian dollars
hahahaha

btw, turntables were around long before the 80's

Posted by Serp on Oct-27-2005 16:52:

i want to see a blend.

hands-on (vinyl) with the possibilities of ableton and such

like, more powerful SSL software

That's exactly it: because it's the easiest music to mix, ergo the DJs haven't spent very much time practising their skills (they don't need to), so they do not have a love affair with their equipment. It's not much of an adjustment for them to move to digital.

For DJs who spent an entire lifetime honing their craft, who spent YEARS just learning certain tricks and techniques that are only applicable with vinyl and tech 12s, it's a bit trickier to give up the ghost (but why would they want to?).....because when you've invested that much time, that much energy, and that much precision into a particular apparatus, you tend to want to stick with it, for changing equipment is like telling yourself that you just wasted the entire first half of your life.

Trance DJs naturally do not have this problem. They haven't spent very much time with any musical equipment ever, and so are free to gravitate to whatever device will do the most work for them.

You registered in April 2005, so I'll clarify this for you. Many, many top-name DJs who spin on vinyl and/or CD decks have used software for their mix CDs. Digweed, as far as I know, does this often. Yet what do I still see him using in clubs?

Posted by robospanker on Oct-27-2005 20:36:

i dont know whats funny.
djs didnt use softwere for mix CDs once upon a time.

I think Kleinenberg has been fooling with ableton, when I saw him here anyway like two months ago, he had two powerbooks, I mean I don't know for sure, but I can only assume he was using it for ableton.

It's funny because you said it like it was one of the few to actually do it. For about the past ten years, software has been an essential part of many DJs mix-CDs.
