what is techno??

Hi
I am new here... I have a question what is the difference between trance and techno? I am not sure but is this correct? :
Trance is emotional and contains alot of bass and treble.
Techno is like trance but it has not so much bass but more treble.

Am I right???

This is trance:
Alphazone - Stay
DJ Digress - Baila Para Me
D-Tune - Push It
East Clubbers - Bungee
Ziggy X - This Rox
Sonique - Zanarkand
PPK - Resurection

This is techno:
Crazy Frog - Popcorn
Tune Up - Ravers Fantasy

Right? Or is everything trance??

Crazy frog is not techno. tune up - ravers fantasy is not techno.

They are garbage.

You want some good techno, try:

Alexander Kowalski - Hot Spot (Jesper Dahlback Remix)

I want to flame this thread so bad.

Treble and Bass???? Where'd u get that from.. Okay lemme help u out..
Trance is much more melodic than techno. Trance is generally more structured and techno is more freeform. Techno is usually based around more grittier sounds than trance which is based around more lighter sounds.

techno is very different from trance. its much more based on the drums, loops and percussions.
for example. listen to this SAMPLE
trance is as you said rich of strings, harmonies and breakdowns.

Try to think of techno and trance as two sides of the same spectrum. They sound similar, have similar structures, similar speeds, similar instruments and similar effects, but trance focuses more on emotion and melody, while techno is colder, more neutral, generally more abstract, and focuses more on energy and flow instead. There's a blurry line in the middle, and stuff that borrows elements from both could be called tech-trance. Both genres also have a few sets of keys generally associated with them.

one of my biggest pet peeves is when someone calls EDM techno...just grates on my nerves. it's like me calling metal, punk, goth, alternative all rock; yes they're derivatives but come on now.

Seems like most of you know what Trance is, but to know what Techno is you need to go back to 1994,1995.
I believe Techno has started in Germany. Short after this another name appeared: "RAVE", more aggressive and faster.
To my view both of these melted together. Sometimes called Rave, sometimes called Techno. Small differences in rhythm, tempo and instruments could make a track more Rave or Techno.

Good (old) Techno examples are:

Tom Wilson - Techno Cat (who didn't dance on it?)
Moby - Feeling So Real
Star Wash - Disco Fans
Celvin Rotan - I Believe
Westbam
Marusha
Scooter
Mark'Oh
Technohead
DJ Hooligan
Members Of Mayday
Sequential One

Also in the Club's a dance style developed. A style typical for Techno. You cannot dance like this on a Rave of Trance track. I believe this made a clear difference 20 years ago.

oh dude you totally misunderstood. the style you are refering to is not techno. that is hardcore/happyhardcore/gabber and had a great success in germany and benelux in the mid 90s. compilations such as Thunderdome and Gabber Nation were some of the famous back then.
all those names you mentioned were among those from this hardcore/gabber area.

techno is something completely different and have its roots in Detroit and was created by Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.
Some early influenced european techno djs are Tomas P Heckman, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke.

Not as totally as you think:

"Techno Cat" is absolutely no hardcore/ not even happy hardcore and totally not gabber. The same for "I Believe". The styles you mention are Dutch, while Techno (for Europe) was a German invention.
It's true that some of the names tried different styles, but that was mainly because of the fact that styles changed (go with the flow).
I believe you have been shopping in Holland and forgot to look at the neighbours, Germany.

If you can read German read this:

http://www.techno.de/news/specials/...referat-01.html
www.techno.de

By the way, like the article says, the early Techno doesn't sound like what we would call Techno nowadays. The equipment just wasn't good enough in those days. Juan Atkins and Richard Davis made the first Techno, but that was just the start. I wouldn't call a T-Ford a car nowadays, allthough it was the first car build in huge numbers.

Maybe you should listen to some early German techno (Kraftwerk) and some years later 1990- ,then I'll listen to some Juan Atkins and Richard Davis..................

How dare you not mention Sven Vth? Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he one of the European techno pioneers who who brought techno from Detroit to Europe?

I know the german scene pretty well myself since I started to listen to trance out of the german sound.
of ourse techno today doesn't sound like the old techno. Neither does the trance today compared to the early days trance or todays hiphop compared to the 80s hiphop. That is logical.
But still some of the groups you mentioned such as Scooter, Mark'Oh and Sequential One got nothing to do with techno at all. It's like telling a kid that trance today is Crazy Frog.
In other hands there were lots of germans which did produce techno such as Oliver Lieb, Mijk van Dijk, Sven Vth, Kid Paul, Schallbau etc. And that is what I would call early german techno.

That's your own opinion. Say that in Germany....

Ever checked Scooter's site?

www.scootertechno.com

A strange choice of words if it has nothing to do with Techno, not?
Listen to the music which starts wenn you open their site. To me that is what I call Techno, that is the rhythm which blasted out of the trucks of the Love Parades in Berlin and the MayDay events.
That rhythm is still the same as in 1994 and will last for years.

Did you know Scooter started with Trance?
Both of the other tracks of the Hyper Hyper single (1994) were released at Trance Nation cd's.

The mid 90's was the time that Techno explode and became noticed all over the world.

One question I missed in this topic after the question "What is Techno?"

Do you mean the beginning, where it still was underground or the moment when it became huge and 1000's of tracks were released?

Laszlo: I agree Sven Vth should be mentioned.

Personally I think Sven never went commercial and always was very progressive, which is good for music development. Allthough maybe he made more commercial tracks under a different name, I didn't check. (Jam & Spoon, Westbam and Ferry Corsten did that a couple of times.)

Posted by Staedtler on Nov-03-2005 19:50:

music isn't defined by the website it's on or by the compilation it's released on.

"this is trance, why? because it's on this cd here!"

it doesn't work that way.

Your choice of arguements are the same as thousands of teenagers I here in Sweden. They believe that everything with a bassline is automaticly techno. And I can't count the number of times I've told various people that Scooter is not techno just because their website say so. They are just living on the hype.
Here in Sweden for example there are some CDs which is called Trance blabla something. But there is not a single trance tune on them. Only cheesy eurodance. Just because the CD cover tells you that its techno or trance doesn't mean that the content is.
And most commercial CD labels just got money in mind. How can they sell a compilation the easiest way? By putting techno on the CD cover and the kids will think "wow this is banging techno I must have it!" but instead its full of Scooter and Lasgo.

And if we believed that Scooter actually made techno would we also believe what Warp Brothers are saying on their website:
"You might somehow compare the style of the Warp Brothers to Prodigy or Chemical Brothers but the truth is that they created their own creative and unique sound."? HAH!
