Tiësto speaks out about concert & #2 DJ....

Right off his site:

31-10-2005

Stormy month…
Hi everybody!

I just came back to Amsterdam, unfortunately, because I was supposed to be in Miami and New Orleans this week. Miami will be rescheduled later this year. I feel sorry for the New Orleans show that had to be cancelled because I was supposed to play for all the people that helped after the Katrina disaster. But I will try to reschedule a date for new Orleans as well next year.

I also just found out that I am number 2 this year in DJ Mag's top 100 list. I would have loved to be the winner for 4 years in a row but if there is one DJ who deserves it for everything he has done for dance music in the last 10 years, it's got to be Paul van Dyk. I am really happy for him and wish him all the best.

Love,
Tiësto

Dj Tiesto is the best trance dj,
I've been to his concert in gelredome (the netherlands). He also performed in a dance club back at home where i use to work.

Very good dj, and a nice guy!

Neil & Ryan would have something to say about that, indeed.

actually ryan and rach would. ive met him twice and he was nice both times, but it only takes one bad experience to change one's perspective, and him being rude to ryan and rach was basically being rude to me-- really was one of the low points of my wmc05...but i separate the man from the dj...as for all this whole trainwrecking slander shit is really really archaic, i mean cro-magnan old. the guy still brings the best tracks and still rocks space like few can, and ive been clubbing space longer than all you space neophyte morons. no offense to pvd but he has never had a set on the same strata as tiesto and alot of others i can think of. or maybe i havent been listening close enough, but every time i see pvd there, i walk away saying, "damn, edgar blew him away AGAIN." not to say the sets were bad or anything, actually they were quite good, just not on that superlative level. at the sametime i view pvd as a pioneer in dance music and he has brought alot of class and innovation to the scene. but give me choice between him and tiesto live, and i will choose tiesto everytime, and im sure a lot of you guys would choose paul everytime too, just a matter of taste. but im done with the days of berating one to exult the other, and with "who's the better dj" BS, its all relative. all im asking is that some of you refrain from this incessant trainwrecking diss, its been a fun ride, but lets all move on; because its well documented he has had his fair share of trainwrecks. so pointing out the obvious is rather redundant and generic. sorry for the rant, its just a little irritating that everytime tiesto's name is mentioned the obligatory "trainwrecking" slants come with it. peace, love, and electronic musik!!!

Very well said, Mattivi.

Meh, all I'm saying is, in 8 years of clubbing, and seeing Tiesto 9 times, he shouldn't even be in the top 50.

I have heard countless bedroom dj's spin better tracks with more skill than I have ever heard him do.

I listened to him trainwreck 3 mixes... IN SUCCESSION, at Global Gathering 2005, and he also made a fool out of himself on Radio 1 with Judge Jules.

People who say he is the best dj since sliced bread, having only seen him twice, obviously havent got much to compare him to.

Look at it this way, say you've only ever eaten lasagne once, regardless of how bad it might be, it's still the best you have ever had.

since this seemed to have turned into a pvd vs tiesto thread, a civilized one at that i'll give my 2 cents

tiesto's track selection has always been top notch... and gasp, might i even say a tad better track selection than PvDs,... but as far as the signature PvD beat, Tiesto just doesnt hold a hat to PvD... we all know and dislike tiesto's commercialization of his gigs but its the businessman in him just trying to make more bucks.. which on the business side i dont blame him...but back to the music.. for pratically every dj ive seen live, i've heard a better set from them that i've downloaded...

but i really cant compare PvD vs Tiesto live b/c its like 16-5 w/3 of those 5 Tiesto sets were ultra and none at space...

Yeah, I guess we do have to keep in mind that track selection is totally subjective.

I personally just am not a fan of the sound he tends to play, in fact, most of the big name trancers do little for me. PvD is fine if he doesnt go too techy (didn't like the first half of his DV set, loved the 2nd half), and of the big 4, ferry is deffo my fav, but he falls far behind smaller names and even some unknown London based djs.

Ronski, even though I have only seen him twice, has been consistent with the type of driving euphoric stuff I love, and Ian Betts played EXACTLY my favourite style at DV, massive energetic hooks!

Maybe I'm also a bit jaded by the prices the big names commend when they really can't justify it.

Why should they be allowed to cause ticket prices to double and even sometimes triple when they play the same tracks for months on end?

Put it to you this way, Will Holland, Ronski, and Adam White played more stuff that I like than any combination of the PvD, Armin and Ferry sets I have heard in the apst 2 years.

Viva la up n coming djs!!!

I stand corrected. One bad night was all it took for Tijs to change my mind about him. Granted, he does have a great track selection, I will never argue with you there, Neil, and he does know how to get a crowd going. As far as Amtrakking goes, no one's perfect, not even my #1 fav. Just yesterday I was listening to a '04 set and I heard a couple of really nasty wrecks. However, PVD, having been the DJ who's played almost every song I wanted to hear live, having made so many killer productions and remixes, and that mysterious aura about him, will always keep me coming back. Even if the night is less than perfect (Thxgiving 2004), just seeing him makes me smile time and time again. Tijs had his time, and IMO his best years were from 2002-2003. Lots of people tell me 1999 and 2000 were his best, but I haven't heard many sets from that particuolar timeframe, but I don't doubt he used to PWN back then. Tijs did a bangup job at Space 8-17-02. You and I KNOW how crazy that night was, Neil, and it was a good time too.

You make a good point here. Back in 99' when he playing more of his banging stuff, like the "Sparkels" track that Transa remixed and even his first Sunrise session cd represented the time when I thought he was spot on with 99% of his tracks.

On a personal level, I interviewed him at the Cafeteria for Jive Magazine a couple years ago and he came off as a very nice person. At the time I was on the fence as two why he was rated #1 but when you look at the draw of 25,000 people he had in his home town you can see where the global support came from.

I am glad to see PVD up to #1. I havent seen him play in about a year but from what I hear he is playing more of a tech/trance sound so I am sure when he is here in Atlanta next week it will be a goof set.

All in all, I think Tiesto had his time. Its time for some new blood to come back up and like kr00t0n said... Viva la up n coming djs!!!

I totally agree with you Brent!! For me it's always been that PvD can move me better but Tiësto's track selection makes me happier.

In the end I prefer PvD because I always dance my ass off & I enjoy his energy a lot more...this is just my opinion. They both deserve credit where it's due.

that confuses me, for a dj to move me, I need to like their track selection.

how do you mean?

I'm not saying his track selection is bad what I meant to say is that sometimes he throws in his lame productions that I'd rather not hear. He bangs it a lot better though, something Tiësto hasn't really done for me (at least not the times I've seen him).

that is the best set i have ever heard from tiesto for my taste. i think that pvd's sound and tiesto's sounds are different, and i have to say i don't like tiesto's sound especially right now. i seen tiesto at space, ultra and tampa, and i just did not like most of his track selection. last show i saw was in tampa at the amp in ybor, it was the worse set i have ever heard by tiesto, for me it was horrible, he played so many vocals (which i don't really like). i also see a difference in the crowd they attract, in tampa i saw a lot of older adults, they look like the type that go to clubs and drink and socialize and they kind of know who the dj is but probably don't own any set or cd by that dj, i also saw a whole bunch of cubans and puerto ricans like by the ages of 20-28 and they were all hyped up about tiesto, and the track he was playing when it wasn't even that good. this supports my theory that tiesto's sound attracks a lot of the kind of people that are not hardcore for electronic music, i am telling u after those cubans leave the club and get into the car to leave they probably listen to spanish music, or maybe even hip hop. i think that obviously pvd plays harder than tiesto, and thats why a lot more people like tiesto. i mean check this out, i once asked this guy if he knew who tiesto was, and his like yeah yeah, tiesto the dj, i seen him at this club i went to, then i asked him if he liked pvd and he said, who is pvd?

bro, please get off that high horse. i dont even know you, but man, dont be a dick just cuz people are bashing tiesto.

but back on topic...

for me its like this.... in the summer of 2002 i was in europe i saw tiesto at impulz outdoor for a BEAUTIFUL 3 hour set. i have the set and still listen to it quite frequently. the place was fucking packed. atleast 20,000 people inside the blackhole tent. it was as packed as space gets during wmc, maybe even more. to the point where you cant move and you can barely raise your arm to bang your fist to the beat, but i had such a blast. that same summer i also saw pvd in berlin for the love parade weekend. and i'm sorry, as good as tiesto was pvd tore him a new asshole when i compare the sets. pvd on his home turf > tiesto on his home turf.

but this is what it comes down to... that vibe pvd created in berlin, he is able to bring that with him when he plays here. when i hear him play at space i can close my eyes and imagine that i'm hearing him spin in berlin. okay okay, it sounds kinda gay, maybe i'm just not expaining it right. BUT when i see tiesto spin hear, its just never the same. for me... seeing tiesto in holland RUINED him for me. seeing him live here or even in ibiza or wherever i might see him again will just NEVER be the same as it was that night at impulz. when i see pvd walk into that booth and get behind the decks i still get goosebumps like i did when he i saw him do this...

edit: i think its really cool that tiesto said that about pvd though. i mean maybe he said it cuz he felt like it was the appropriate thing to say, but i doubt it. shows he has some class. i just think its funny that pvd plays some tiesto productions but tiesto never plays any pvd. lol

One of the reasons I'm nto a fan of the big names any more, they just seem to be trying to promote their own labels
