Bit Torrent

Does anyone have a way around Rogers limiting the bandwidth on BT downloads?

I went from 350kb/s to 15kb/s.

w00t. Go Sympatico!

400+ kbps here.

Posted by Blue. on Nov-03-2005 04:43:

I'll probably switch to DSL really soon, probably a smaller company just because Bell might limit the download rates sometime soon too.

Posted by Chris Allen on Nov-03-2005 07:15:

I was told with full confidence from a Bell employee that they would never again cap their service.

If Rogers continues to keep this up I wonder how long it will take before Bell follows suit.

Also, I heard from a reliable source that the reason Rogers is having issues with torrents is because it eats up a lot of bandwidth, and they are having trouble keeping up with their new Rogers Online phone... thing so this is a way to figure out their problems in the meantime.

Who knows. All I have to say is I'm glad I'm on Bell for now.

That won't change a single thing, ISPs can still filter by header content (therefore using bit torrent headers). And it won't even matter if you change ports. ISPs control us. That simple.

Yup, lots residential ISPs are adding layer 7 classification and analysis capabilities into their network for traffic shaping purposes.

Funny thing is they are selling you up to 5mb of bandwidth then telling you how to use it.

IF they cant provide it don't facking sell it Rogers F**k heads

There was an article on neowin last summer that stated torrents account for ~35% of ALL internet traffic. Not all torrent content is illegal though, some companies and governmental institutions use torrents to distribute large data files. Capping all torrent activity is kinda like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Posted by St_Andrew on Nov-03-2005 16:05:

I would call rogers if I was you and tell them to either give you full bandwith or you are gonna look for another provider.

Also, isn't it illegal to filter content by content headers? Some privacy here?

That is exactly what pisses me off. Here pay for high speed internet but we're going to cap your download limit and then proceed to fuck you over without any warning about what you can and can not download.

I think I will call them. Can anyone confirm if what they're doing is allowed (I'm assuming it's somewhere in the contract or else they wouldn't risk doing it in the first place) or if it's a breach of their contract or anything like that? I want to give them a call but I'd rather be a little more educated first.

Posted by Chris Allen on Nov-03-2005 19:27:

I'd go through your terms of service contract with a fine tooth comb.

However the statement at the bottom mentioning things can change at anytime may fuck you large.

Just complain about certain programs not working correctly through the internet and you are led to believe that rogers is the one doing the throttling.

Call and bitch, if they tell you to shove it, switch to DSL.

We going to post about this every week?

{yawn}

Posted by arek on Nov-03-2005 20:30:

done use azareus,

use bitcomet and enable the encryption.

the bad part with this is that you will only recieve good speeds with other users who use bitcomet and have the encryption enabled.

azareus team is currently working on encryption for their btclient...

rogers is blocking everything torrent related, even private servers.

more info on this >>>>>>>

Posted by Mag1k on Nov-03-2005 21:33:

I seriously have no clue what your talking about....
I use Azures. Im with Rogers.... mine used to be at 15-20 for the good files, and its still the same

Posted by arek on Nov-03-2005 22:44:

azareus does not have encryption.. YET.. they are working on it.

bitcomet does.

if you and me are downloading the same torrent.

because we have bitcomet and encryption enabled. the download will go fast, how fast? 100k-200k-300k whatever the speed from a person using encrypted client.

because the encryption works in a way that it disguises the download..

rogers can't see that it's a torrent coming through but a html file or something other than torrent thus it works but only with encrypted clients.. BITCOMET is the only client that uses encryption at the moment.

Posted by Adamo on Nov-03-2005 23:15:

I have Rogers.
I use Azureus for Torrents.
I get 350kb/s on downloads.
I write like I'm in grade 3.
I win.

Posted by arek on Nov-03-2005 23:41:

just wait till your area gets capped.

i had no problems till last week and the news is rogers is inputing these block boxes in all areas to cut on uploads.
