Road trip to NYC
How long does it take to get from Toronto to New York City? Including and not-including rush hour traffic?
I'm leaving Toronto around 8am...so when will I get to NYC? I have to be there by 5:30pm at the VERY latest.
Laura shut up...I know I'm an annoying psycho biatch! Haha (But you love me...you know it)
Start address:
Toronto, ON
Canada
End address:
New York City, NY
Distance: 801 km (about 9 hours 46 mins)
Conclusion: You're pushin it

Driving in safe fashion and avoiding rush-hour, the drive takes 10 hours.
I'm on my way there this Sunday (2 days from now) and will be back Wednesday (miss PvD by 3 days! thank god for MV and Morillo!).

I hate you Lisa!
j/k hun
I wanna go so much! but I cant due to "Visa" issues
I NEED to hear PvD live again, 5 months withdrawal. If only I didn't buy NIN tickets @ the ACC on the Friday...and a cousin's daugther's christining on the Sunday. GAH.
Well Laura completely sprung this on me last minute...she has an extra ticket to PvD...soo...well...after very little convincing I gave in. I'm the worst for that!
But yes...the reason I'm asking is because I have to register for classes at 6pm at night...and I HAVE to do it then, b/c I HAVE to get into the classes I picked. My parents are going to be away, so I can't ask my mom to do it, and my friend's all register around the same time. Plus, I'd prefer to do it myself.
Laura assures me we'll get there in time...but I have a bad feeling. Like if we left at 8, that's pretty much saying we have to not hit ANY traffic...and well it IS New York!
Fuck...I dunno what to do!
Seeing PVD in NYC...I've heard from quite a few TAs that his shows at the Roxy are among the best in the US. Lisa, GO. DO IT. Go to my hometown and see DA MAN live. You will NOT regret it. It's my turn tonight! In just a few hours...

LISA!!! So excited to be chillin with you, laura, and fran next weekend!! Glad Laura twiested your arms for a whole 0.5 seconds!!) LOL
BTW if you don't take the thruway and take 17 across instead, you will shave off more than an hour and also not have to pay tolls

PvD at Roxy in NYC - Nov 2002 - was one of my best parties EVER. He played for like 6 hours I think... I drove down there the morning of - we left at about 7am and got there around 4 catching some traffic just before the tunnel to Manhattan.
Worth the trip
You'll love it
(I was gonna go to this but Tiesto in MTL will be enough ...for now)
Dude, we can leave earlier...
I'm all up over this mother.
Swamper: he is also playing a six hour set this time as well
(much to Laura's delight) LOL
Shanny: Glad to hear you will be joining us

Oh my! It looks like I will meet you
PvD will be fun!!!!

F you guys
Ryan - 3 is now 4...Josh just called me today to say he's coming too! WOO HOO!
Kelly - thanks for the tip, I'll make sure we take that into account!
Andrea - you are a LIFE SAVER, I know you know how important this is to me!
Josh - Glad you're coming...haha I know how "joking" conversations with Laura turn into to truths all the time!
Laura - if it's possible, COULD we leave earlier? I'm sorry for being such a bitch about this...but I think you can understand why.
Del - Very good to know...thanks for the input. It's good to hear from someone that's done it already. And yes...he's playing for 6 hours! This is going to be INSANE!
Advikonen - it'll be great to meet you!
Cale - HAHAHAHAHA!
instead of taking route 17......
go through PA instead. It shouldn't take you more 7.5 hours.
I drive this about once every 2 months. I'll post my directions in a minute.
----------------------------------------------------------------
edit:
The route through NY, PA, NJ and back into NYC is by far the fastest. and the scenery in PA is nice anyway.
From Toronto your best bet is through niagra falls (401 to QEW). Once on the US side you'll want to take 90E to 81S (switch to 81 just after syracuse) take 81 to scranton.
after Scranton switch to 380
then get onto 80
80 will take you in through NJ
stay on 80 until you see the third or fourth exit for route 46 (80 and 46 cross over a bunch but the longer you stay on 80 the better since it is faster)
once you are on 46 stay on it until Clifton then switch onto route 3.
route 3 will take you directly to the lincon tunnel and into NYC.
*Note* 46 and 3 may seem odd to most since they are really built up shopping and express roads. they are highways and don't get distracted by the stupid* driving (* reads fun, if you are comfortable with nuttyness) and exits every 20 meters. stay in the middle lane as the slow lane is used for slowing down to exit and speeding up to enter the highway. (there are very short on and off ramps if any).
If in doubt as to which way to take a highway you pretty much only take them east or south, with the possible exception of the ring road around buffalo right after you cross, I forget that one and it depends on which border crossing you take so look into that, I find the nigagra falls crossing to always be a fairly good choice going down and lewiston coming back up (lewiston allows you to just stay right on 190 till the end at customs).
oh also try and avoid the part from route 80 into nyc section of your trip between the hours of 6:30am to 9:30am and 3:30pm to 7:30pm the traffic will easily add another hour onto your trip going either IN OR OUT of the city. You're almost better just getting off the highway and waiting... you'll get there the same time.
As for parking I have a house in Rutherford NJ (5 miles from times square NYC, it's right across the hudson river) My house is about 4 doors away from a major bus line into the city that runs 24 hours a day. The town is regarded as one of NJ's safest towns and the commuter line comes about every 15 minutes and costs around 1.75 each way. If you wanted to park at my place for free (sure beats NYC prices and damage from reckless parking! ) you'd be more than welcome to. The bus line goes right into port authority at 42nd street.
I hope this helps. Have a good trip. PM if you need more details.
Take care,
Dave
