portable media players

I am thinking of purchasing one of these. I want to make sure my divx movies will work when I buy it. There are some out that specify they play divx and mpeg4 and what not.

On my home computer, to view 99% of my movies with good enough (audio/visual) I use NIMO and XVID codec. When I purchase these players, can I update the codec if for some reason one codec is needed for a specific movie. I also just found out you can convert my divx movies of diff codecs to a format that will run on these PMP's.

My main concern is...

Does anyone have a PMP that will play your collection of DIVX and how?

1)Simple load it in and any divx movie plays no matter what.
2)Load and update codec somehow and then your divx movie play.
3)Convert divx into certain format and then load and play.


Its costly, so I need my $$ worth.

you can find them for about $200 if you look hard enough.. and it comes with it's own media converter in case the format isn't supported.

I use PocketDivXEncoder to resize them to 320x240, which equates to about 2MB per minute, and I have a 1GB SD Card, so I can get plenty on at any given time.

I recomend you get the Creative Zen Vision, It can play AVI, WMV, Divx, XVid, MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4 files, Plus, It has a built in 30GB Hard Drive.

The docking station and media card slot makes it completely worth it, not to mention the exchangable battery

I think there are a couple of reviews of it out there, Theres one from CNET right here.

I would love to get one of these but with the pricetag associated with them I'll say no for now

I'm also highly unimpressed by the quality and features of these units as a whole so I guess I'll just have to wait.

Well, This paticular unit supports resolutions up to 640x480 though.

thanks for all the help. I will check on this psp. Then zen looks good though. In the end I want my movies to be compatible and user friendly with good qaulaity like everyone else.

Realistically I doubt resolution for such small screens will ever go much higher for technical and production costs ( a higher res screen would drive up the cost I'm sure ), and it's also un necessary for something so small to have huge resolutions.

True true, I find 320x240 plenty watchable, so 640x480 would be tops for such a small screen, any finer detail would go unnoticed

Well, The unit can play res up to 640x480 as I mentioned before, But you also have to consider on the quality of the video, Normally video going at around 640x480 resolution will be less pixellated and I believe going at around 29.97 frames per second, I don't know what it's like for something thats 320x240 though.

Seriously, I go for the Creative Zen Vision, With 30GB of HD space on that, And the fact you can easily transfer your mp3s or videos onto it via USB, You can practically put a bunch of full length movies on them.

Screen resolution and frames per second display is far from being an issue.

Isn't USB and/or Firewire file transfer pretty much the standard on all these units? Maybe not in the past but I'm pretty sure it is now.

I have a W800i with 2GB Memory Card and loads of convertors on my computer so I have no need for a media player.

The thing is, You dont have to do any type of conversion for this player, If you already have a video thats in divx format or whatever, Theres no need to transcode it to a smaller screen size.

What is the max memory for this thing, I read it is 1.3 GB, for me I need more to hold than that on the run.

My main concern is will it play the formats I have.

Dude, Take my advice and go for the Creative Zen Vision, It has a built in 30GB Hard Drive, PSP doesn't, Plus you can hook up the Creative Zen Vision on your PC via a USB connection and it will show up as a drive on your computer to transfer all the mp3s/pics/videos files into there respected folders.

So when this drive loads, I will load in my nimo, xivd and set it up via Creative Zen drive and after that I will load in my movies and wallah once again. I need to triple check!!

I'm sure you'll keep it, After all, This unit is the best of both worlds.
