Posted by Allied Nations on Nov-10-2005 19:34:

Winston Churchill is a great example of my favorite form of wit, i think it's absolutely genius and i don't even know what u call it.. it's not really humble, but resembles the form of humility...it's very subtle and yet the impact is huge...

here's some great ones:

Lady Astor: Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink.
Winston Churchill: Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it.

"I wish Stanley Baldwin no ill, but it would have been much better if he had never lived". on Stanley Baldwin

"Eating words has never given me indigestion."
(true!)

"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."

I'd put that in the dead-pan catagory.... very dry and matter of fact. It's all about delivery.

That is no proof!

Sarcasm is a complex form of humour that works in different ways depending on the situation. It is true that sacastic remarks can cause discomfort to people or make people sad, though this does not make it the "lowest form of wit". Sacasm can be extremely clever. The main problem with sarcasm is that there is too much room for misinterpretation.

I concur.

Poor sarcasm is a very poor form of wit.

Good sarcasm is the best.

I mean the kinda sarcasm the the victim doesn't even pick up on, but everyone else does, god I love that kinda sarcasm

In case you didnt notice i did not say that sarcasm was the lowest form of wit in gramatically correct terms or by dictionary definition, i said it was the lowest form of wit by common knowledge, your point isnt valid.

but it isn't by common knowledge, it merely is by a saying that has been around for many years

Posted by Arbiter on Nov-10-2005 22:45:

to be honest this whole discussion is down to personal opinion, whatever we feel is the lowest form or wit is just another opinion, im asking what everyone thinks is the highest form of wit.

i do admit to avoid confusion i should have made the thread subject less vague and more simple.

So what does everyone think is the highest form of wit?

Puns are in my opinion,
