Techno
Trance
Dance

can you hear the difference?

Trance is all melodies and build up/breakdowns. Techno is about mini build up/breakdowns and quite repetitive, however some are very neat though.

Check out Pjotr G's "Public Struct" thats techno.

A good example of trance is Armin's "Communication"

'rave' isn't exactly a genre - but - it's generally a term used by some to describe a harder sound - like Techno or older 'Hard Trance'

Posted by Paffe on Nov-11-2005 10:31:

Ok! Im starting to get it!
Ive heard some talk about oldschool, i guess thats the "old" version of the music genre?
But what about house music?

And again, I Iwould be gratefull if you could mention any artist as an example to the music genre..! That helped s3nate but i didnt find the pjotr G song..

And btw. thanx for good answears!!

What would you call the first Prodigy album?

Posted by MSZ on Nov-11-2005 14:34:

i would say genres such as happy hardcore would tie into "rave".

Trance:
Layers:__________6-15
Melodies:________3-7
Made with:_______Synths, beatboxes, real instruments, samples, vocals, random sounds, electric guitars, acidboxes, etc.
Melody lengths:__10 seconds, to 2 minutes
Top 40 Hits:_____around 30 in North America, around 300 in Europe.
Song structure:__Starts small, like a techno song, then adds layer after layer, building to climax of uber-layyered energy, often with tricks like taking away the beat to listen to the melody, then bringing it all back like a motha****a. Or maybe it gently reconnects them or something (there are hundreds of ways to build it up). By the middle there are a large number of melodies, most of which are parts of one another, and speeding up of the others. Sometimes vocals are added during the buildup, and sometimes vocals are added during the "breakdown", or when it builds up, or often not at all. Sometimes they are really repetitive, like one phrase over and over, and sometimes they're as ever-changing as classical. Most trance has crazy little "flying-sounds", and often contains really long air strings, and runaway melodies. Techno people hate it. It's WAY too memorable (read: good) and "poppy" (read: successful) for their snobbish razor-thin repetitive tastes.

Techno:
Layers:__________1-4
Melodies:________0-2 (95% of all techno is 100% beats, although some detroit stuff has one or two short melodies)
Made with:_______beatboxes, samples
Melody lengths:__1 second to 7 seconds (7 seconds is rare)
Top 40 Hits:_____0 in North America, around 30 in Europe.
Song Structure:__A beat starts at the beginning, then a couple beat layers are added at some point, which then repeat throughout the song, for the entire length. Sometimes there are cool little effects in the song, and sometimes the beats do funky little things. But that's about it. (it's okay sometimes, and some of the cooler ones are good). A techno song would look like a flat line, where trance would be all over the place. There are no vocals in techno (although there is an occasional vocal sample, or a particularly innovative song that adds them. Not that vocals are neccessary.)

One layer? That must be some goddamn boring techno.

So it looks like all you need to make Techno is a drumcomputer.
Trance without the synths and melody would be Techno again?
Example: Safri Duo - Played A Live

To avoid stupid discussions (again):

Rave: Raver Nature - Stop Scratchin

Rave was perfect for making large crowds wild! Love Parade, Mayday.
It was a substyle out of Techno in the 90's.
It's perfect to blast the roof of a building.
Try to find: Sensation - The anthem 2004 in .mpg
Probably close to Hard Trance nowadays, but a little bit less Trancie.

Old School: Name for the early Hardcore, was very popular in Holland.
Rotterdam Termination Source - Poing
http://www.discogs.com/release/49692
Notice the style which is mentioned at this site.

Early work of The Prodigy to my view should be called Techno, but was in development, because they experimented a lot. It's not trance and not really rave, not hardcore.
(No Good, One Love.)

Dance is not a style, allthough at festival like Werchter in Belgium, Roskilde in Danmark and Pinkpop in Holland, bands like Underworld and Chemical Brothers are called Dance.
Rockers of course don't want Techno, House or Rave.

Dance is music on which you can dance, so practically covers it all.

List the names of artists you listen to, then we can classify what you like.

i suppose yes. since trance is an offspring of techno its natural that without all the synths and effects it would become techno. but you can't just take a random trance tune and remove the melodies and make it into a techno tune. techno is made in a completely different way than trance. other things to keep in mind.

For the last time...

Trance
Techno

Get it?

Posted by Derivative on Nov-11-2005 23:46:

prodigy have never been techno.

they have always had their own perculiar brand of breakbeat hardcore and breakbeat. the early experience stuff is alot like other types of breakbeat hardcore in the early/mid 90s like phuture assassins. later on they kind of developed their own sound and its hard to call their stuff anything other than say its just liam howlett's own brand of breakbeat.

and people have got to stop quoting that listology site for a definition of techno and trance. its an utter pile of crap and its obvious the writer hates techno.

you really dont need definitions at all. you just need to pop over to www.juno.co.uk and listen to the soundclips in the techno and trance section. then buy the records that you like the sound of. over time you'll have (voila!) a record collection!

This is great! There is no counting how many times I've had to explain to my friends why techno is NOT trance and vice versa. these samples do a very good job of illustrating the differences. I need that Chakra tune by the way, I'm a huge fan of the Space Brothers' work!

the listology definition is pretty good IMO but definitely biased against techno. still, you can't deny what he says is true... if you're a techno fan, you love the genre despite it's simplicity and lack of popular success, no? Or do you love it BEACUSE of those things?

Your techno sample sounds more like house.

Well...yeah! Can you give me some good songs that spew the essence of techno. Classics, current techno, the whole nine yards. Whatever you can think of. Conjure me up a small but powerful list please....
