US Electronic Passport Question

I'll be back in the US end of december and I have heard that I may need to get an electronic passport?

Is that some load of BS?

I have a US passport that's still current and apparently it will be valid for the full extent of the validity period. That's what the US Departmenent of State website says.

The Embassy is a bunch of morons I think cause they said it needed renewed now even if mine is still valid till 2013 or some rubbish.

There's no way in hell I want to pay and go through the hassle of renewing one if I don't have to.

So which one is it?

Old passport ok?

Or am I really supposed to renew?

I don't know for sure, but i bet you're fine with the passport you have now. I haven't heard of this new regulation and i doubt that they expect all US citizens abroad or going abroad to have their passports changed by the end of December. It just doesn't seem feasible.

All US Passports from 2003 on have the electronic thingy. All it is is that Immigration swipes it instead of typing the numbers in. Just a coinveince thing dont worry about it.

You do not have to renew or upgrade to the e-passport so long as your current one is not going to expire. I just used my passport a month ago and plan to do so again in December. There's no way the DOS could possibly upgrade the millions of passports it would have to in a timely fashion if it forced an upgrade.
