Thumbs down M.I.K.E. vs Tiesto? (fyi)

Is this possible? can it be that Blackhole cancelled Mikes gig for the 18th because they felt too much competition between the dj's, now that he's ranked no.2 in the world? LOL

taken from mike's forum on http://www.mike.be/phpbb/index.php

This weekend i was invited to play for a big event called Transmission in the beautiful city of Prague.
However, this gig was cancelled due to the extreme demands of Tiesto's Blackhole management.
Although this was not my decision, compensation for myself as well as for my fans is well in order.
Me and my management regret and dismiss this kind of attitude in the music scene, as trance is known for unity.

Mike

That pisses me off that they would disrespect one of the kings of trance like that...

Yeah, "King Of Trance", quite a fluffy title. Does having a large enough fanbase make you less valid for being disrespected?

Pretty bad by Black Hole though, but we don't know what the "extreme demands" were...

Posted by Numidia on Nov-16-2005 22:11:

what else would you call MIKE? the number of classic trance tunes he's personally produced is staggering.

I guess what I mean to say is... For someone who's gotten so much success from this music, it's surprising that he would screw over someone else who's done so much for the genre.

no he is not the king of trance. such title does not exist.
he is a good producer, which propably had his best era during 99/00 with numerous good tunes such as Sunrise at palamos, Twixt, Universal Nation, Choose freedom etc.
He still is good but the the BIG tunes don't come as often as they did before .

Posted by Synthesia on Nov-16-2005 22:19:

And still producing great tunes. But I think the thread is a little misleading with the title MIKE vs Tiesto, since we don't really know the whole story..

Posted by Numidia on Nov-16-2005 22:20:

argh... by "king of trance" i merely meant to express my high regard for the guy. You guys are taking that too literally.

I wouldn't say MIKE has produced any classic trance tunes. There are trance records that even none trance-heads will remember. Age of Love, Acperience, Stella, Caf del Mar, Dark & Long, Flaming June, Xpander etc. There's no one MIKE track that has recognition across the spectrum. He's just produced so damn much that a couple of his tracks hit the right formula. MIKE isn't a genius, he's just competent and prolific.

Posted by MichaelBoogerd! on Nov-16-2005 23:03:

Can I explain the rest of the story?

On trance.cz (a similar forum to this one but for Czechs!) there is now lengthy topic of dis-gruntled fans who are going to either boycott this event or simply turn up in various t-shirts or with large banners just to piss Tiesto off.

I hope it puts his feet firmly back on the ground, being boo'ed off the stage like some gimp, not knowing why on earth they (for once) don't appreciate his ass.

Even the event organisers United Music, have tried to calm them down, and come to some kind of truce - by re-booking MIKE at the next Transmission party with Ferry Corsten in February. They also announced they will be revealing the full reasons for this atrocity, BUT only AFTER the gig itself. Bribery to not mis-behave? I think so...

damn these bastards.

You gotta wait for us to answer, silly.

Universal Nation is pretty commonly known amoung non trancers, certainly here in belgium

I've been listening to trance for five years, and I've bought loads of retrospective compilations, but I've never heard it, and when you ask around, it's far less well-known than any of the genuine classics. It's a genre-track.

I cannot agree with this. Universal Nation, Strange World not classics? That's simply ridiculous.

Mike is responsible for some of most anthemic trance there ever has been, there's no debating that.

No he isn't. He's responsible for a few big shlockers that sounded like more famous anthems so got lumped in with them. Maybe on the Internet, where he's made so many damn tracks that you're bound to bump into him on your illegal travels sooner or later, he might have a lot of recognition, but out there in clubland, he's just another bit-part trance producer.

Oooh, for the full 5 years even

Come man, I know I might be biased as a Mike superfan, but even the biggest Mike hater must admit that tracks like Sunrise At Palamos, Universal Nation, Strange World or The Legacy are true trance classics.
The fact that they frequently feature on lots of "classic" trance compilations (Innercity, Magik,...) says it all.

Posted by Push2005 on Nov-16-2005 23:24:

Lol; funny topic

The audience wants to see Tisto instead of M.I.K.E

I seriously doubt that.
And it has nothing to do with filesharing this, he's simply made more (extremely) high quality tracks than the majority out there. I grew up with UN whilest i didnt know the first thing about trance.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Nov-16-2005 23:26:

Five years is long enough to have heard most MIKE tracks when they came out. I'm just saying it so you don't think I'm a 9 month kiddie, not as a boast. I freely admit to my youth, although some assholes are damned if they ain't going to prejudice me because of it.

Anyway... you illustrate my point. They're niche tracks. Most trance fans may know Magik, but so what? That doesn't mean that they're classics. The Auronaut's "People Want to Be Needed" (much better than any MIKE classic, by the way), is on Magik 7 too, but most people would blink if you named that.

i'ld say thats a personal opinion and not representing club land out there

But as a 17 year old, you can hardly claim that you know all about the "clubland" you talk about, since you're way to young to have participated in it long enough to fully know what it's all about.

And maybe Mike's tracks aren't classics to you, but I'm pretty sure that there is some general agreement on the fact that the tracks I mentioned can be considered as classics in the trance genre. If they weren't, the crowd wouldn't still go mental when a DJ plays them, years and years after they were released, no? I've witnessed huge crowds going berzerk when the DJ dropped Universal Nation or Strange World, and even after a few notes the majority of the crowd started to cheer because they already recognized the tracks. How many tracks can still evoke that effect and remain so well-known and repeatedly played year after year? Only classic tracks I think...
