Please Help Traktor or Ableton Live for my needs!!!

Ok so I am leaving to Montreal to go to school and have not option but to leave my CDJ's at home in Vancouver...to get me through this time I have weighed my option's on money and space and have come to the conclusion of labtop djing.

Everybody is raving about Ableton Live but my concern is that this program is more complicated and not meant for what I would be using it for. I do not want to create music just a professional peice of software for mixing my mp3 collection with nothing but my labtop pluged into a receiver?

Another program I keep hearing about is Traktor and since they are comming out with a new version I was thinking that this would be better suited to my needs. What do you think?

And for my needs what would be a good but basic sound card that I should use so I can mix. I don't have firewire but do have USB 2.0

Thank you and sorry if this has been asked before, I just am torn because I have to leave my decks and just want the best solution!

if you wanna only mix your mp3s... without any editing or sth like that and using only your laptop (or laptop plus extrnal mixer) Taktor is better solution for you IMO

Its all personal preference and what you are wanting to aspire to, ive used both and i prefer ableton over traktor, but thats just me.

Personally Ableton is much easier to use. In Traktor you still have to pitch bend, but in Ableton you set it and forget it.

^^^^ but correct me if I am wrong, the benefits in Apleton are found in it's editing and rmxing abilities, and that is more what it is made for, while Traktor is 100% made for just mixing??? I have a huge mp3 collection and just want to beable to cue up the songs in the headphones so I can mix but I do want something somewhat professional (not virtual dj)...and also something so I can take it to other people houses and just plug it in there receiver and have quality sound. I haven't played around with software so I don't know, but from the research I have done it is obvious that Ableton is the superior program overall, but for just having the best time you can mixing mp3's on a labtop I can't see how Traktor could be beat!!! (again I have never used it!)

If you want software solely for mixing, get Traktor. It's simple and only takes a minute to figure it out. Ableton is more complex and will take some getting used to.

From what you've said I'd say Traktor would meet your preferences, it's an extension of DJing on CDJs as you've already done. You might want to get the 2.53 or 2.6 version if available and if you can get a free upgrade to v3, since v3 might have a few minor problems when it comes out, next week expected. Although the initial bugs are usually just nuisance things and fixed in a month with an update.

I use Traktor, my impression is Ableton is more experimental and for people who want to do more radical things to the music, and there is more prep work. It takes a fair bit of work to learn how to use either program.

Its the fact that ableton will hold mixes where as traktor doesnt unless you work the pitch bend during the mix. Yes it takes alot more getting used to the workings of ableton, but its much better program and you'll end up with more professional mixes imho

yeah come to think of it... get traktor.. b/c with ableton you need to prep each track individually and perform this thing called "time warping" which for some tracks can be quite difficult and/or time consuming

traktor would allow you to do the manual dj correct which is actually a good thing b/c it will keep your ears in shape... (dj-shape)

so yeah.. go w traktor
