will .com ever be replaced?

Hi guys,

I purchased a domain name about a year ago - derry.com

derry = a small city up the road from me (also known as Londonderry - long story + not getting into it).

anyways. it has a population of about 100 thousand. I have no intention of selling this domain for the next 20 years or so.

Due to the lack of availability of .com addresses, is there ever expected to be another domain extension that will become the number one?

Also, if anybody has any idea what a domain name for a town with 100k inhabitants - please give me a rough idea what it may be worth.

Thanks,

Dave

you'd probably be best contacting Derry City's Council or the tourism board to see if they are interested in purchasing it. you would be talking a few hundred quid at the least

steven king or one of his rich fans might want it. I'd put it on ebay just to see it there is any interest

.com = commercial site. if you're making a commercial site then you use .com, if an education site, .edu. etc

i think that .coms should be broken up into personel sites, bio/band/artists sites, etc.

They should start using .po for porn sites, that'd free up about 99% of domain names right there

.rly

There was a recent (last 2 or 3 years) push to allow registration of *.xxx domains for adult websites.

Damn it!

If it was londonderry.com I might have considered it

You could always sell it to SinnFein....

Actually I consider .net to be to toppest of top domains.

Posted by UglyDave on Nov-18-2005 12:13:

Someone earlier suggest i sell it to derry city council for a few hundred..

i paid a friggin fortune for it!!!

and i have 0 intention of selling it anytime within the next 20 years.. long term investment

RickyM - that's the friggin problem.. the real name is Londonderry... Damn u friggin brits!! U oppress us for hundreds of years! now you're decreasing the value of my domain name!!

Posted by Dublin Guy on Nov-18-2005 14:26:

its real name is Derry not Londonderry, that just sounds stupid when people say londonderry, espically Irish people.

Dublin Guy - The real name of the City is Londonderry.

Unfortunatly, that's the way it is.

And to your Toicfaidh ar la comment, i seriously doubt we'll ever have a united Ireland. Sucks, but i dont see it.

If anything Northern Ireland will become an independant state.

I just rememeberd, IPv6 may play some role in naming conventions. If and when it's implemented.

i wouldn't, i believe they have rights to make a forced purchase if they feel like it, the law will always side with them too
