Smiley DJ DJs Chill-Out Thread

HI guys,

I just thought it was about time that we had a DJ chilllout thread here...

I've already noticed that the people here aren't as harsh as many of the other sub-forums in TA, and i've noticed that a lot of casual banter is going on in a lot of the other threads, so i thought it might be a great idea for all of us to get to know one another a little more, and just trade casual banter (preferably relating to DJing in particular).

Maybe it'd be a great place to tell everyone a little abour urself, and (if) where you play out, and what equipment you use. A few photos, would be great.

Who knows, maybe a few friendships could be made here, and u could be off, to Dj in another country, to swap locations with another DJ?

hope u guys are in

[my rant]I hate casual banter on message boards. Go chat with your friends in person. I gotta wade through it to get to useful information.[/rant off]

Sure why not? Im listening to chillout right now anyways.

It would be cool to have a bullshit sticky thread wherre DJs could just talk about random shit...mostly pertaining to mixing...but yeah...something a little free...

So how about that phrase matching

Speaking of which I finally did one today.

hahaha.... good for you. Phrase matching for me was really easy, when compared to getting the hang of beatmatching.

Well i guess i'll just have to start off then...

I'm a uni bum in Queensland, Australia, and my holidays have just started... well not really... long story... I still have to sort some formalities out.

but yah, my next nearest gig is in February. One of the chicks in my course wants me to play in her birthday party, which she's spending heaps on. It'll be in some big resteraunt on the top of a mountain. Right now, i'm not taking my DJing very seriosuly, but i wanna get really good at it, before i graduate. When i graduate, and get some cash, i'm gonna buy some nice gear, and start getting really competitive, and out there in the world. Oh yah, and i'll do some production.

I'm still not sure what i'm planning for the holidays, i'll have to think things through. I really wanna get started on learning a language...

does anyone know any websites that can teach the basics of any language out there?

Just something i randomly thought of which relates to this thread :

DJing is a lifestyle.

This line alone tells me a lot about you.

ha ha ha, OK, wat does it say?

maybe i sort of wrote it down wrong to give a bad impression...

u think i'll bum out of the whole production thing, and just be a bum DJ? U know, i'm not even thinking about production at this stage, until i have reasonable income. but definately, i wanna be able to make some nice ch00ns of my own. I know it's freaking hard.

It seems like a plan, like, "once im a good dj, then ill make my own tunes!"

Has nothing to do with me thinking youd "bum out of the whole production thing".

nah it's nothing to do with the whole "once i'm a good DJ"...

i just htink production is a whole new level of commitment, that i'm not prepared for until i graduate.

We already have the COR for that, let's keep the other sections bullshit-free.

I like the idea.. but it should be somewhat limited to dj related conversation. but stuff that doesnt need a whole new thread.. which just crwods the board..

well,i'm just finding that other threads seemed to get trailed off, and into other random shit, that would be fit for COR.

not to mention, that 99% of the threads are like... yah i love my new Xone.

they don't necessarily encourage a discussion, it's just random shit thorwn in, to tell everyone about something.

and plus, being DJs and all, the ppl in this area generally have similiar lifestyles, that we can all relate to.

Isnt it true if you can mix very well you should have some knowledge how to put a song together?

No.

So why are rotary mixers better than linear? Or is it personal preference?

Personal Preference..

Usually.

Just a different feel.

bah,

i don't even use the levels, other than to change volume level of a track (in a literal sense)...

other than that, when i'm mixing, i only use Crossfader and EQ, and the CUE level, beforehand.

You'll learn soon enough that the channel faders are the way to go.

I don't even use the crossfader anymore, except when I'm bored and start cutting shit like Edward Scissorhands.

indeed, they give much more control of sound level than crossfader...

genarally, upfaders for mixing, crossfader for scratching

I like the idea of this thread, let's face it although we are DJs there's a lot to talk about besides...

I find it a pain to go other places as the people I actually like talking to are DJs, when you go to another forum it's mainly full of whackos and anal retentives who don't know how to act.

If someone doesn't like the thread then they can refrain from posting in it, that wey they don't get offended.

With regards to guys in the UK I have often wondered what most of them are like. I have actually only met one Trance Addict in my life and that's Spin Doctor who we don't see here any more. Hopefully I didn't put him off DJing for life .

It's always cool to share stuff with people i.e. knowledge and so on but sometimes it would be cool to see what makes people tick and there are a lot of interesting characters here. Would be interesting to know who is the average age of the DJs here and so on.

Cheers
Nem

yeah i think a DJ COR is a good idea. its definitely different talking about something dj related to a dj or someone else.

for example, a few weeks ago this producer heard my radio show on WNUR 89.3 fm chicago. he called in and we had a quick chat, and a few days later, i get a few promo copies of a tune he is releasing soon on this west coast label.

sure, its not a huge deal, but its something that non-djs wouldnt really understand. whitelabel promos are great!

back on point, a DJ COR could be sweet. just dont want people to be anal like in some other forums.

razzi.

So I ended a set with Ween...

This thread is money... Good idea... I posted this in the COR too, but figured it's actually probably more appropriate for a thread like this:

So I ended a set with a Ween track last night...

..."Monique the Freak." I ended my set with the Brad Carter Remix of Red Carper - Alright, and as soon as it was finished, I dropped "Monique..." as a kind of "Nights over, thanks for having me, this is your exit music" kind of track... And it turned out so damn well that I ended up playing my first ever, 3 track "Encore."

It was just a house party, but it's one I play fairly regularly, and generally there's a great crowd, dancin' their asses off, but last night was out of hand (I dropped Group Therapy - My Own Worst Enemy and during the break, the entire room started to pound out the percussion on whatever surface they could, the overwhelming noise of people just tapping out the bongo/conga part during the breakdown drowned out the vocals!)... I've said it before, but I'll say it again, this is why I love house music, because while to a certain extent I think with Trance you can entertain a certain crowd, but with house, I can take a room full of central Wisco college kids and MAKE them shake their asses for 4 hours straight, and still leaving them begging for more... I've played to rooms where people were getting down before, but last night was fuckin' electric...

It was an interesting experience to say the least... Ween rules...

Now, on the flipside....I've had the shittiest DJ weekend ever, I've been ranting all weekend that it's 'TIME TO SELL THE GEAR!'

I know that i won't and I know that in a day or two it'll be back to normal but, I hate those days when nothing is right.

The thing that really bothers me is that what if I was playing out? (I don't right now) I can't just have a shitty day and be like 'oh well'.

Bah. Tomorrow'll be better.
