Man shot to death during Toronto funeral

A man is dead after gunfire broke out during a funeral service in Toronto's northwest end, sending 300 people running and ducking for cover.

In the Greater Toronto Area's 69th homicide this year, three shooters allegedly opened fire on the 18-year-old victim with semi-automatic weapons at an Etobicoke church at approximately noon Friday.

In a sad connection, the shooting happened during a funeral for another gunshot victim -- 17-year-old Jamal Michael Hemmings. He was shot Nov. 9 in an Eglinton Avenue West parking lot.

Police have begun a search for three suspects. They say they had no reason to expect violence during the funeral. If police had, said Chief Bill Blair, officers would have been present.

Blair said he believes the two murders are connected, noting the victims were friends. He called the shooting "appalling" during an afternoon news conference.

"The public nature of this violence demonstrates the callousness some of these gang members have and the total disrespect they have for their community and for public institutions, like churches," said Blair. He added that he thinks the shooters' conduct is "shocking and surprising to us all."

Blair said that after this summer of violence he finds himself less and less surprised at the levels to which some gang members will descend. He also called for witnesses to come forward with information.

Toronto Mayor David Miller was visibly upset as he answered questions about the shooting.

"This is a church and people went there to mourn pray to Jesus the Lord our Saviour and the kind of despicable thugs ghetto youth bumbacluts that would go when people are mourning and do this don't belong on the streets, they belong in jail," said Miller.

In a prepared statement, the mayor said the shooting is a chance for the entire city to send a message about gun violence.

"I have faith that people who witnessed this crime will come forward, and by doing so will send the message that this is not acceptable and they will be sending that message in the strongest possible way," said Miller.

Did David Miller actually say "bumbaclot" on the record? That's hilarious.

On another note, how can you expect people to respect a church in a secular society where science is "proving" that God doesn't exist?

Of course, they'll miss the point and increase gun-registry bullshit or throw up a few community centers in the area instead of dealing with the root of the problem to begin with. People aren't taught morality anymore. Nowadays, it's taught that people have their own morals and have the right to hold them, because we're Canada, the tolerant and loving Canada. And when someone kills another it's all "I can't believe this is happening, why are people killing eachother?"

They'll teach you how to build a rocket in high-school, they'll even teach you to respect other human being's opinions, dress and "culture" (which, in Canada, means the way they speak, dress and cook). But will they try to instill some sense of morality into the kids? Fuck no. What a joke.

you are right....morality has been lost someone along the line in many families.....any new gun laws will not solve the problem. The only way to solve the problem is selective parenting......if you wish to become a parent then you would have to go through a screening process, testing, and schooling before you could become a parent. If you have a child and cannot show the proper paperwork that shows you are qualified then the child is taken away from you. I know we can't do that but that's what it's gonna take. Any two people can have a kid nowadays

Actually... most parents would make GREAT parents if they were allowed to. But we live in a society where dual-income is king. The root of the problem began when married women wanted to work. And instead of the Dad giving up their job to parent, both parents just sent their kid off to day-care and school. And most of the time that COULD be spent raising their kids, the kid's usually sitting in front of a TV or at a friend's house.

Selective parenting would make a great Liberal campaign. But it's the wrong answer as well. You don't fix things with rules.

Lets just hope it doesnt go into Martial law anytime soon. Kinda like how it was during communism in eastern europe.

A military officer with an assualt rifle on every street corner.

You never had any freedom.. but you where safe (until the police started beating you).

If I were them, I would probably skip the next funeral they have.

They'd be much less likely to be killing eachother if they were... say... in the work force doing something useful. But no, our wonderful education system says that you need to goto school til you're 20+ just to make a living.

Teens don't think they're tough because they kill eachother. They kill eachother because school is a dirty place to be. It's boring, and it stores all of your energy up in a frustrating environment. Tempers are going to flare when you have nothing better to do with your time, no, when you're not ALLOWED to DO anything with your time, other than learn about Christopher Columbus and talk to other kids while you sit on your ass for 6 hours.

I don't understand why the world thinks you need to goto school til you're 25. Learn to read and write, learn to add 2+2, then get married and get a job. Anyone can learn any job, jobs are routine for the most part. Let SOMEONE raise the kids, let the other spouse make the money, and let society take care of itself. In a world focused on economic prosperity, we've forgotten that without a strong community fabric, you'll eventually end up with nothing.

The neat part is that, with the aging demographic of the Western world, which is going to result in a labour shortage (that is, the shortage of available workers) society might just learn this lesson sooner than we think.

I'm by no means an expert at island slang, but I'm pretty sure it's a pretty durogatory term.

I was thinking the same thing...

I can't believe anyone in their right frame of mind would ever think of doing such a thing.
That is seriously warped...
