Read This! Mac vs. PC - need advise...

Want to buy a laptop... I really love the slick and shiny 17" PB G4 but my reasonable side says get an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad instead... Obviously I've ammassed huge number of apps for every need on PC but Mac is an uncharted territory for me. I also plan to use it for light music recording (eg. studio) duty but not really sure if I should go mac or pc...

any suggestions from either camp?

im a PC guy but when it comes to laptops, i'd go for a PB in a minute!

anything "laptop" related you can do on a PB, its not like you are running a FTP off a mac or something. If at anything, a laptop would be used for music editing/recording and graphics which apple's handle in their sleep.

a pc will give you that universal feel but if you go portable, i say the PB handsdown

...well, theoretically, OS X is bsd-based underneath (DARWIN), so, you can run FTP on it (oh, and more securely than on PC, that's for sure).

one other thing to consider, apple is in the process of phasing out g4/g5 and moving to intel processors. pb prices have fallen on this news so you can either get a good deal now or hold out for intel. the ease in which apple software handles multimedia is sweet but if your already have pc software it be cheaper not to switch platforms.

Great point. I actually read about it. My thought is that eventually, apple will become another HW vendor like Dell, Alienware, etc that sells "boutique" hardware for those who have extra cash and probably even try to venture into OS market, to give MS run for its money. Tho, the thing I find most assinine about Mac OS is the absence of right-click. I do about 70% of tasks with the right click and not having it present and dealing with a single button drives me NUTS!

although I doubt they'd be able to fit a decent cpu in such a slim case and still retain power, feature, and heat disepation in such a small case.

I can get a PB G4 17" with:

100 MB HD
512 RAM
Combo Drive
Airport/bluetooth/gig E/modem

for $2000 + tax new

hate to take away you right-click petpeeve but under OSX right-click is enabled. I use it all the time. Part of the reason they're moving to intel is because g5 runs too hot for a laptop

I heard from a friend that the mac's with intel cpu's were up to 5 times faster than the ibm/motorola cpu's.

your friend is exagerating

Get a PC.

Why?

Because I have nothing better to do.

Posted by Cloudburst on Nov-23-2005 00:21:

I bet he was talking about some specific thing, I wasn't really listening that hard since I was doing my math assignment..

The G4's are lousy at floating-point calculations though. They (friends) did a test consisting of prime factorization and when the mac was at 1% the PC had completed the task.

Just some stuff I get told. I've played around with some macs at uni and they are cool though. I still like my PC laptop though.

Don't go Alienware or Dell...

you fail.

this does not compute. why is nou back? i thought he had a nervous breakdown or got banned or something.

this is an interesting topic . there are things where the intel chip is better than the apple gXxx, and vice versa .. i haven't heard that news that FP operations were faster on the intel, rather than the mac .. then again, math operations base solely on how quick the adder is, and the ability to perform shift operations on instructions for advanced computations.

i heard that apple's perform branch predictions faster than intels, which being the case why apple has lesser cases of apps hanging .. however, hanging apps usually fall 80% on the software developer's duty, but the hardware has to be able to learn how to allocate space in memory, utilize whatever resources are available, and everything ..

this is a nerd thread. hahahahhahaa ...
i can't answer this question for you ...

G4 are literaly smoked by Centrino/P4 processors.

Don't waste your money on an Apple notebook now.

IF you can wait, I believe in 2006 Apple will introduce new notebooks with powerful Intel processors.

So ahum, buy a cheap PC laptop (very good ones for 500$!), save your money, then get the real deal Apple running on Intel.

all the advantages of MACs stop right there

seriously, it is one unusable, uncontrollable, unadministrable, inflexible, infested with holes operating system, created solely for the sake of eyecandy pleasure.

he is exagerating, but the intel chips are indeed showing an incredible speed improvement. still don't believe it?

Just because Mac's don't ship with a right click doesn't mean you can't buy another mouse.
I personaly hate using a mouse so not having the right click on a mac doesn't bother me ( well actually you can just hit the ctrl or apple key I forget which and then click on your mouse and that equals right click ).

Saying you don't want a Mac cause of the lack of a right click shows how little you know about them and have possibly been fed excessive amounts of stereotype about the product without trying it yourself.

I personaly use Winblows and MacOs machines all the time. I don't really have a preference. Both have their pros and cons.

In the case of a laptop if you need a big screen go for a PB or else an ibook otherwise just buy a cheap pc laptop they're a bargain these days.

no you are completely right about being able to run a FTP off a mac, you can do that on literally any platform/computers these days. yes and maybe even more securely but i wouldn't trust the stability of the OS to hold up versus a winblows or linux OS. I'm saying a laptop should be used for xxx amount of things which im sure a PB or PC laptop can handle respectively, i was just trying to make a corrolation between the stability of each platform per type of work you'll be putting it through. As for mac going intel, thats old news, i'd still say grab a PB since prices are twindling with the intel chipset on the brink of exposure, you'll get what you want for the type of work you want it to do. if this is going to be your ONLY machine which you'll use literally every day then I'd suggest a PC laptop. Like ^^^ said, alot of eyecandy is put into mac machines, i wouldn't trust alot of things if i were considering how long the pb would last me.

hey ..

i know apple pcs support c development ..
does anyone know if it supports java code development ?

nevermind .. found it .. hhahaha ....

next question ... how is runtime development and the IDE apple provides for java / c development ? pretty good ?

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Nov-23-2005 14:52:

looking through the apple development pages and stuff .. it looks like apple is trying to compete with linux distributors .. pretty good ...

mac.

Posted by emc^2 on Nov-23-2005 16:30:

lots of great insights. Did a bit of research meself last night and also spent about 2 hours messing around with a mac in the store. It appears that PC is a better decision at this particular point in time. Thanks for all the input, I'm off to buy an IBM Stinkpad - that thing rox!
