What to buy...

Hey, im trying to get into DJing and I don't know what to get. I am a college student is poor at the moment, so I have a realtively small budget. I am also curious what is the difference between belt and direct drive turntables?

Direct drive gives a lot more torque, which means faster startups. Using the search button will help a lot, but to get a couple general ideas, first you have to decide how much you want to spend. If you dont want to spend more than 1000 dollars, your best bet would be to use CDs. Look at the Pioneer CDJ-200. As for a mixer, if you want really cheap, try the Behringer VMX200, but if you want something that sounds good check out the Pioneer DJM-300. As for headphones, look no further than the Sony MDR-V6. Mixing vinal will cost a lot more, not only due to the price of good decks, but also each record (usually 1-3 songs) costs around 10 dollars, whereas a song from www.beatport.com costs $1.50.

Go all out buy some tech 1210 m5g's, pair of CDJ 1000's and a Xone92.

pick up some used technics mk2's or m3d's.

even if you don't take to djing you'll be able to resell them with minimal loss... maybe even make some profit.

as for a mixer, take a look at rane or vestax. i would be a little more apprehensive about buying a used mixer... but if you can test it first, go for it.

stay away from numark and behringer... i have experience with these products, and they are just a waste of money... don't let the cheap prices get the best of you. imo, go for decent gear from the get go. it costs a bit, but you'll be able to resell it. if you can't afford it, save... don't buy cheaper products now... you'll regret it later.

yeah i spent my student fees on a nuo 5 and vestax! now am nearly �2000 in dept. happy days
