richard gale - mars attacks! ***go to media page****
tell me what ya think! and what labels i should target with this style of trance?..
rich
FOR UPDATED VERSION CHECK MY LAST POST
dont think its one of your best rich. i like everything going on but it feels a bit bland. i love a real kick driving through a track and this track lacks that. although i think it has some real good effects and synths going on.
7/10
just think you could add a bit more to it mate.
cheers
kane
cheers mate.
my damn kick!
they let my tracks down no end..
i might turn it up in the mix and add a bit of grunt..
thanks bud!
rich
any more views?
Hey Rich mate,
For godsake pleaseeee no that title
an 80's nightmare, mars attacks, you give your tracks cheepsounding B-movie titles. Now is that what you want?
About the track itself, I think melodywise it is quite original. Almost all the synths are unique and I dig that about you. Really your ideas are excellent. Bass in this track is also pretty wicked.
But as we have told you before you, the percussions and kick lack. When will you finally start using the hihat tsss tsss tsss tsss (4 per bar now that ain't to hard ? haha). Only that simple open hihat will give the track a lot more energy
Overall this track is pretty decent because I like what you do with the melodies and the atmosphere is kick ass. You just need to work on a more flowing percussional section and please find yourself a better kick. Last but not least, the mastering needs attention.
and please oooh please dear goodness gracious that title is not OK
LOL
really like the percs that come in at 0:44, those reverse highpitched delayed kicks are cool too
! I think its that
I tried that and it sounded just like that once
..
nice pads and the melody is nice too
! original melody!
hehe reverse kicks are cool
!! the gated pad really gives something extra
nice job.. you did the intro well
and the like the snare that "pushes" along with the beat.. every bad 2 snare "push"
.. sounds very good!
nomen nomen nomen...
glad you love the names i give my tracks lol
i love b-movies! anyways ill try and name my next one differently...
as far as kicks are concerned i already know but i just cant get it right...ever!. im glad you liked the bass! one of the strong points
can anyone send me a decent sample of a kick please? it ll be a great help..
do you mean offbeat hihats? ill try some of them in my next piece...
thanks for your advise mate. your always helpful in your critiques.
takkra!
great you liked it overall. and the reversed kick is something i like also. thanks for your review mate
rich
Hey....
Pretty oldschool stuff... but Im liking it. Some of the pad sounds are pretty thin but I dont know if you meant it that way. A good title for the track.... pretty spacey stuff. The break is really long in the middle. You could introduce many more sounds during that part ( sound effects etc. ). Also you should concentrate more on your drum fills, by varying them you can make the track much more interesting.
The track is also pretty long and gets a little monotonous.
Cheers, Lakeus
thanks lakeus.
im glad you liked it.
i always get responses saying to fill my tracks out with more sound effects etc and i always try but they always sound wrong to me. i love minimal at the mo..
varying the drum pattern sounds like a good plan. i take it into consideration in my newest piece.
thanks for the critique mate
rich
nice percs maybe the bellish sound that goes with the kick is abit loud..
like the synths + melodies, the reversed kicks are nice too. buble stuff lol
.
i like it but it gets abit boring after a while... maybe add more melodies or change something.
keep it up
this is quite interesting. the whole song hasnt got ur traditional syncopated hi hats....hard to classify this as a trance track.
ur synths r very original, love that 'squiggly' one through out the track.
the track definitely needs more mastering like others have said. specialyl the drums and kick. but apart from quality, the beat is pretty original and catchy.
jason; cheers mate. glad you enjoyed the melodys and synths.
i kinda think the bels suit the weired track style. ive tried other sounds but then the melody seems out of place.
thanks for the comments..
noreliq; i dont really know what style to label it as. glad you like the synths and the 'sqiggly' one- cant even remember what parameters i played with to get that..
i understand what you mean about mastering. might get it done elsewhere if i have a few quid lying around.. apprieciated mate!
mr palm: great you enjoyed most of it
as i said before i quite like the cowbells.. kick is gonna be sorted out soon because i have some nice kick samples from a friend now.. im pleased you like the atmosphere. laying and atmospher down is always first to me. drive and percussion lack... thanks again. oh and 'p.s' im still lovin nortek - fall.. maybe carry on with that one and add some more to it?
rich
LIstening now RIch
Intro is cool, I understand you are going for an 80's sound, but I don't fancy that cowbell much...the bass is nice however, and already i can feel the atmosphere you are creating, the reverse kick adds to this. Those strings are nice, perhaps could do with being a bit more powerful, percussion is quite good, just think you need an offbeat hi hat
. That synth plays a great melody by the way...reminds me of some old games on the NIntendo and Mega Drive...overall very atmospheric song indeed- just work on the percs more!
Hey Richy
Well pretty much everything that needed to be said, has been said.
Sounds Old School alright, but if you intended it I think your approach is really accurate.
It's got a cool bassline let me give you that, and synths are good as well, some percussions need to be changed (cowbells
) some need better eqing. Just remember the only elements needed by the 200 Hz and bellow are the Kick and the Bassline. So even if your hi hat (in this case you need one, that drives the track) is obviously above that mark naturally, eq down 200 Hz and bellow on it anyways, and so do the same thing to every element that is not a kick or bassline.
If you think that your synths lost their warm feel because of this, then eq down from 150 Hz and bellow (on the synths)
Even if they don't look like it, their low frequencies add up to a bad final sounding.
Try to pan some sounds to right and left, and leave the important ones in the middle (Kick , Bassline , Off Beat Hi Hat , Main Synth).
For atmospherics you could use a good widener.
After you do a good mixing, mastering shouldn't be much of an issue if you have some knowledge. But this definately needs to sound better.
Cheers
hey ricky and paulo
thanks for checkin my tune.
your points are very much appriciated!
ricky: im concentrating on percs on my new track more. thanks for your kind words about everything else in the track.
paulo: thanks for the advise in eqing parts. i usually dont apply attenuation of eq to my main synths or anything. just boost certain frequencies till they sound right to me...
ill apply some cut to <200hz of all tracks except kick and bass on my track im working on at the moment. i have also started using more hi hats on it and its made the track much more driving than this and my previous tracks. ill also play around with the panning of some of the parts/effects.
cheers again!

Hey rich, thanks for your review on my tune. So here comes mine in return
commenting as I listen...
- nice variation on the beat. The groove is interesting. It's not really driving, but definately interesting and very elaborate.
- I dont really like the cymbal thing on the beat.
- nice oldschool synths. They sound really, uhm, oldschool. Good job in reproducing the feeling of the "original" analog synthies. Some might say that sounds too silly nowadays, but I know it was your intention to make a sound like that, and I think any lover of oldschool analog synth sounds will dig them.
- the bass is really warm, and sits well in the mix. Good!
- great layering then. All the sounds work absolutely well together.
- I think the mastering is good too. I didnt have a look on the spectrum, but just judging by ear, this sounds nice and well balanced.
- Maybe you should add a little more variation. Another theme with a different synth for example. In the long run, it gets kinda repetitive.
All in all, a very interesting and refreshing tune. It seems you spent a load of time on it. Good job, keep it up!

non driving is probably the best way to describe my stuff! cymbal mirroring the kick i thought worked well. sounds like 'alter ego' rocker but i like that i think..

As always nice work.
Actually managed to squeeze this into a set I did on local radio (forgot to mention that to you) recently.
As stated perhaps the cowbells sit little too high in the mix but other than that I like it.
If I had to categorize this in any way I would have to say that it reminds me a little of daftpunk, perhaps it's just the chord progression but it does.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Nice and original track. I like the retrosound and synths, it sounds a bit like older JMJ stuf (well his more weird stuf i mean
and that's a compliment
). Overall a creative electronic track with a good ambiance, nice melodies and sounds (allthough i must admit that the cowbells are a bit misplaced imo). The mastering sounds not that bad btw, good job on that.
thanks for checkin guys
karl - glad you enjoyed mate. and im very pleased you put it in a slot of yours
what sort of set was it placed in? which tracks in between? did you record the set? id love to hear it! even at 64kbps..
i love daft punk so thats quite a nice comment. i suppose they make use of a lot of retro synths.
im workin on a non cowbell version now and am uploading to yousendit right now. its rough but gives an idea of how it should sound.
cheers mate!
romi - thanks ron.
im glad you liked the ambience and melodies
and it pleases me that you found the mastering ok
as for the cowbells lol.. im sorting them a bit. i have lowered the volume of them and applied a bit of effects to tone em down..
thanks again guys

cowbell sorted. new melody layed down and a few hi hats and mods done.
its un mixed and levels are all over atm. tell me what should go/stay before i start tweakin it
rich
Can't remember what I mixed it into but I do remember that I mixed the drill - the drill into it. Had to use master tempo on the CDJ though as your track is faster by quite a bit. The speed difference put it out of key (Am).
My friend recorded the set so I will see if I can get a copy for you.
Cheers
Karl (Nem)
i know what you mean!
was it the nu electro mix? i used that track as a reference when eqing/mastering! and also regularly play that tune! its awsome!
id love to hear the show
rich
I hope the first is the updated version... (title says so, me thinks)
Original synth-use here. Sound at 1:20 = weird but nice. Break left me a bit in doubt, if it's not to long. Synths seem to be in like "tiny" style. I like that! Part @ 4:00 is too empty, IMO. Perhaps giving that lead some reverb would do great. I like how the song continues from there, though.
I guess you're still working on it. So am I, so check out if you'd like. Good luck with it,
-weBs
