bassline
i'm curently working on basslines but unfortunatly i have some cheep gemini headphones (the djx-1) and no speakers so it may sound ok in my cans but could sound realy bad on different setups.i was wondering if you could listen to this sample and let me know what you think of it. soundwize.
thanks!
sample here
It almost sounds a little too compressed. You can't really make great tunes on headphones although it's been done. I really can't hear the bassline too well. I know it's like around the C3 range, but I can't hear the moving bassline you've tried to create.
can hardly hear the bassline at all mate.
i used lots of fx on that first sample. here's another one which i think it's more obvious.
another one
bassline sounds more distinct but could use some boosting. If you added any other instuments...i'm sure the sound will be muffled. Maybe boost some mids
It's fine in the mid-range most of the problem is that your low-end is too muddy, which is a common problem when producing with headphones. I'd tighten up the decays on your bass and kick. But that may just be me; I like really staccato basslines.
Your bass sound is tooooo weak. You can barely hear it. I suggest either making the channel louder, using a different bass sound, or layering your bass sounds to get a deeper sounding bass. As of right now, you can barely tell it's in the mix.
what about this one?

It's to weak, if you haven't done this yet, try compress the kick and bassline on one channel, and put an equalaiser on each track. Also try to compress the Kick and bassline individualy.
Try to make it sound good in your headphones and compare with other songs..

Not sidechain. What he means is compress the bassline so it is a little louder. Compressing the kick and bassline together just makes them fit together better so it's not muddy in the low eq range.
so, first i compess the bass, and then (using a merge/split unit or simply a mixer, right?) i run both comperssed bass and kick into another compressor. is that it?
Hey. Actually, I'd recomend compressing the kick and then compressing the bass and the kick together. I wouldnt double compress the bass if you plan on making it at all dynamic. This isnt as important in trance as it is in house production though.
Cheers,
Zac
Very true DarkSword...but what you're stating makes the bass stand out more in the mix and I know he could use that
