another shooting.. this time.. right outside my house.. i thought 50 cents was banned from canada.. damn.. no seriously.. i need to move.. :S

Most people who are shot are involved in the incident, or other crimes which are related. Random shootings do not usually happen.

If there have been 60 shootings/deaths this year, and 2.4million people living in toronto, not to mention the millions more that are jammed in day to day, thats 0.0025% of the population who has been killed by a gun in TO this year.

I honestly do not feel scared when I walk around. Maybe because I am a guy, but maybe because I hope, that as long as I keep my nose in my own business, I will be fine.

Still, it is kinda unnerving to have it happen so close to home.

what if the incident is just a mugging or robbery that escalates to violence?? and at that point the victim is involved...

yup.. im nervous because my mom comes from work after 8pm.. alone.. and i would literaly die if something ever happens to her..

if the *vast* majority of gun related violence, and violence in general, is NOT random...then why does it even matter where these shootings occur?

if there are more shootings downtown, it's because of population density, not because it's more dangerous here, I'd argue.

exactly.. before anything happened to me.. i used to be free all over toronto.. going from dundast west to main station.. downsview and kipling.. now im just more careful when im out.. getting a gun up in my head is the reason why im so scared.. before i didnt give a shit.. but everyone's got a reason why.. and that is my reason.. now im out..

Not on hand no. I will try and look for some stats. I just used some of my own experiences, and that of those who I have talked to(who are unfortunately involved in crime). So its more of testimony, than cold hard facts. But again, I will look to see if I can back this up.

Yes, you are right that random muggings and robberies can easily escalate to violence.

mushyflowa, I hope you are ok, and I hope they did not hurt you. I did not want to sound insensitive, but this is just how I look at the problems. Fortunately, they did not use their guns against you, and I am guessing you did not give them any reason to. If you do feel unsafe in an area, then the right thing to do, is to move.

I would quote the media in reference to the victim's involvement in the original crime, but we know we cant trust the media, so I wont even go there.

the problem with using your own experiences to base this off is, if you've never experienced this kinda thing then you may just not see it the same way.

those of us who have had guns pointed to our head (yay), have been jumped by groups of thugs out of no reason whatsoever (yay) etc., etc., well we see a different light. (I havent been charged or detained or even questioned in relation to any crime in my lifetime)

shit can happen randomly - it may not be random to the people perpetrating it... but to those of us who have been waylaid while minding our business it's a very vivid reality.

it definitely changes the way we see things

the thing of violence is that it IS Random. But what about bystanders? even I frequent that variety store often. and also - eeekkkkk what seems looks like my whole neighbourhood is down there staring at that body.

Agreed. I don't feel unsafe in this city. Never have, even after 10 years of living downtown. Mind you..I wouldn't walk thru dark alleys late at night but I travel around the city a great deal on foot and on local transit and have never really had anything that scary happen around me or my home that would have me classify this city as an unsafe one. As Orko stated, calling Toronto an unsafe city because it has more shootings than another smaller town is ridiculous. Your chances of getting injured or caught up in the crossfire are extremely low and no where near a level where we should fear living in this great city. Frankly, the suburbs frighten me much more. They seem to have sucked the life out of all of my friends back home. Defining myself by the colour that I paint my front door, driving to the corner store for my milk and not having a city centre within walking distance don't make sense to me. If I eventually decide that I need a break from living in the city I'd head to the country. Its one extreme or the other for this girl. That grey middle ground terrifies the scorpio in me.

And as Jayx1 has stated... most of the GTA shootings have not been in the downtown areas but in the suburbs. If number of shootings vs population size is how we are going to deterine the level of safety in a town/city it seems to me that the suburbs rank pretty low right now.
