"Just raising the issue means that the uranium conversion process in Isfahan has already been acknowledged, although the initial demand was closing down the Isfahan plant," Iranian nuclear delegation spokesman Javad Vaeidi said Saturday. Based on the Russian proposal, which is backed by the European Union, the US and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran would be allowed to convert uranium at home in the Isfahan plant before sending it to Russia for enrichment. This has been done to prevent any Iranian misuse of the enrichment process for producing atomic weapons material. "The Western red line used to be uranium conversion. Now it is enrichment," Vaeidi told the state television IRIB. However, Vaeidi said Iran had neither received an official proposal from Russia nor an official request to meet with the EU trio. Iranian nuclear officials have, however, said that the country would be ready to agree to such a proposal. The conditions would be acknowledgement of Iran's principal right to peaceful nuclear technology. The spokesman alleged that efforts to refer the Iranian nuclear case to the UN Security Council were not solely connected to the nuclear issue but part of conspiracies to topple the Islamic system in Iran. "Nuclear disputes should usually be settled within the IAEA. Referral to the Security Council follows other aims," Vaeidi said. The spokesman warned that if and when the Iranian case was referred to the Security Council, Tehran would implement a parliamentary bill to suspend the IAEA additional protocol and limit or halt IAEA inspections of Iran's nuclear sites. |
