Try this for a total mind F!@K exercise
Think you can mix great? Then try mixing old-school:
1. Mix only using vinyl
2. On your mixer, mix ONLY with the channel faders. No crossfader or EQ's AT ALL.
3. For cueing, cue using the one ear on/one ear off method. Do NOT cue more than one channel at a time EVER in the headphones, and do not use split-cue.
4. Try switching cue ears.
I've been trying to do this to get my beatmaching even tighter without "checking" my mixes by cueing in the master. This is what it's like to spin on a Bozak or Rane MP-2016 (not the A model, and without the EQ expansion).
It's, umm, interesting. And humbling
Uhh, that's how I've always mixed.
haha i think thats how most ppl mix lol @ old skool
Your not from around here are you?

Most ppl do that. I dont use number 2...I use all eq/efx/crossfader/and faders to mix...for cueing lately ive been doing split cue but normally its the old skool method as you say
That's the point, DON'T use eq's, no swapping bassline's, etc. Makes you concentrate much more on track selection and programming.
And I always mix using the one ear on/off, but I usually check my mixes before I bring in a track to make fine adjustments. Try not doing that

| Originally posted by InterMilan31 ok but using eq's effects and etc helps your mixes. Especially sending them to clubs/labels etc. If your gonna just plain mix records its gonna seem pretty bla. I do know what your saying though gets the perfection of a mix down but eq's and effects are needed now a days in mixes and sometimes if the beat is off a bit good use of EQ's and Effects help it |

I dont do #3. I split cue (i think)
What I do is have one track playing and the other on cue, put the headphones on both ears and switch the cue mode to ch1-ch2 so I hear both at the same time in the headphones. I don't understand why not much people do this, I find the one ear on one ear off thing quite difficult!

if u want to make it REALLY old school...
try mixing without the pitch slider. meaning, keep the slower track in beat with one finger on the platter at all times.

Yes people, this is just an exercise! Not that we don't know how to mix, but I know I certainly use all the EQ's, filters, and cue'ing features of my Xone 92. I just thought it would be "fun" to go back to channel volumes only, no eq's, and the most basic cueing (one channel at a time). Also switching cue'ing ears is kinda freaky at first after you get so used to doing it one way.
If you play out and you are stuck on a Rane rotary, with a single monitor on the "wrong" side, that's what you'll have to deal with. I feel the more variables I throw into making my mixing more difficult, the better I'll get!

but you're still not allowed to cue more than one channel at once, not allowed to cue master so you just have to tell if they're in time by switching between which one you're listening to haha

Ryan with the Xone:92 very nice!
With rotary faders, even. VERY nice.
It's my birthday next week (turning the big 30) so I treated myself to it. I'm so good to me.
