longest time spend producing
How long can you stay in your studio and work on a song? Max I've ever done is somewhere around 3 hours. My ears like are ready to explode after that but there's usually where I cut it. How about you guys?
7 hours is my limit. After that I start hearing white noise.
It depends.
If I get uber-fixated, totally lose track of time and end up spending 3 hours in front of the computer then generally my producing time is just about over for the day.
If I pace myself and take breaks, I've sometimes spent 8-10 hours on it. Doesn't happen very often though, I do have a life, and in fact I generally don't have the time to spend more than an hour or two on tunes.
Hmm, It's hard to say, sometimes I can "Slow-produce" while I'm watching tv and then I'll probably can sit around 8 hours or so (Fairly inactive)..
Then there are those times when I'm highly active and then I can probably sit around 8 - 10 hours in a row. Alltough many of the trax I work on rarely gets finished, the time aren't a waste of time since I develope by doing those test-tracks as well..
But most of the time I work on stuff a few hours at the time, close it and continue a couple of hours later and so on..
i did 10-15 hours once and it sounded like shit the next day cuz i didnt take any real breaks to refresh my ears. but the average is 3hours..
~ 3 hours seems right to me too
I spend about 1 hour a day trying stuff. And once every two weeks I feel i'm onto something and lose track of time completely, turn my phone and MSN off and can spend up to 4 hours. I'f I feel the track is realy rocking my socks off I could spend 7 hours. About 4 sessions of 4 hours and i'v finished a track and go back to spending 1 hour a day.
But everybody has their own scedule I suppose. Some guys spend less time and come up with phatter tracks, and some the other way round.
kind regards,
Charlie Darwin
1 hour or so just fucking around and then maybe 2 hours actually making something that can be called "music".

Not quite long cause after I while I don't hear it clear anymore.
Well, once I've worked for 8-9 hours, and I fell asleep in front of my computer... ;D that was AWESOME!!!!! Usually I work at lest 3-4 hours then I take a break and again, and again, and again
I have spent literally spent almost 24 hours in a studio - recording vocals, writing process, overlooking the production, giving my opinion....The other night I spent 4 hours on the beats alone for a track....I could spend my life in there i think...however that would make me incredibly dull and would not allow for inspiration....so sometimes I need to go outdoors...lol
about 5 or 6 hours, with a 20 minute pause every 5 minutes

one time i kept producing for 20 hours .. !
but the normal is 5 - 6 hours a day maybe ..
It really depends on my mood, but i usually prod on weekends...
If im drunk i tend to quit earlier... if im blazed i often end up sitting for like 12 hours or more!
But "normally" i would say i spend no more than 2-3 hours on regular sessions.
Only about 20-60 minutes at a time nowadays. Not really motivated any more.
in heavy production-periods:
up to 14 hours/ day (rather at night), in average 8-9 hours/ day. of course i take little breaks every now and then.
but then comes a time where i do different things like engaging in my studies at uni - and where i don't do anything musically, perhaps reading some articles or music related magazines.

long periods can cause ear fatigue - you should take a 10min break every 2 hours at least, each hour is better. And listen at no more than 90dB (helps to phatten up the bass when turned up).

Only increasing volume occassionally for reference.
That way, when you come back to what you have done later it still sounds 'clean' for want of a better word.
