how many of u cant play music instrument?
ok mate im just curious how many of u decided going into EDM music production ( by using program like cubase, reason, synth programing, etc ) without any knowledge of music theory or cant play any music instrument ( like piano, guitar, etc) at all.
I can play the triangle.
I play guitar, keyboard, and trumpet. The keyboard was self-taught though, which is why I suck at recording
honestly...while knowing how to play an instrument is truly beneficial to producing, i don't think it's necessary at all. with today's synths and sequencers, all you really need is a solid music theory foundation. and i know many of us here are teaching ourselves music theory via the internet
that said...i play the piano..haha...i wanted to move away from boring classical to something more interesting...hence, EDM!
Does grade 1 violin count?
I can't play anything, though some people tend to like my music anyway :P
Play around on the piano sometimes, but have no theory foundation.
Didn't think it was needed until recently i really had the problem of not knowing, only searching the next chord on hearing .
ive had lessons on piano and guitar, but it doesnt help at all... as i didnt learn the theory, just how to play the pieces
I've got grade 3 piano
Nope, no real knowledge of music theory or composition.
Me making music is so fun. At least I am trying to learn scales now after haunting this forum for months...
I had alot of musicial training, grade 6 classical piano, grade 5 musical theory (dropped out before I finished grade 5 though), 2 years learning classic flute when I was younger, and self-tought on guitar and drums from almost 2 years now... And I still suck on all these instruments
But the piano lessons have helped me alot, and the first 2 years I spent in musical theory (basic chords, harmonies and so on), the more advanced stuff has never helped the least bit in my music production, but my drumming has also helped alot. I have a much better feel for all rhythm now. I reccommend everyone to get a drumkit, if they can
I had some foundational music theory from childhood. But I started producing not knowing much more than the terminology and what the names of the black and white keys were.
I did learn some music theory along the way. Strange though. For it seems that the more theory I learned, the less creative I became...

No music theory.
you guys dont know me, kind of new :S
i dont like intro threads though.
www.dangerboxstudios.com is my groups website, still under construction
anyway, no music theory. After producing for a long time you know how to make things sound good, but music theory will just teach you the name of what your already doing.
and honestly even the advanced stuff will not help in trance. just and opinion though.
I can't play any instrument, but am learning a little theory online. But I think you know what sounds right and what doesn't "by ear". Thats how I'm learning. And looking at other artists midi files to see intervals and melodies and how rhythms/basslines work yogether. Just trial and error, I think really for those of us that don't have any formal training.
PC
I wish to god that my parents had given me piano lessons when I was a kid tho. My boy is definitely gonna do them!
I play the clarinet. I also got about 4 years of basic music theory in elementary school, and then one extra year in sec2. After that, I switched to a music concentration program in sec3 where I had two music classes every day. After awhile I just got totally bored with it. It was too mathematical and not artistic enough. I just quit practicing, didn't pay attention in class, didn't do my homework, and then I flunked it horribly. I like electronica production because it allows me to directly interact with the synthetisers. I don't have to think of rules and notation systems, I can just go by ear. As long as you have a good concept of how a track is built and what notes sound good together, you don't really need any music theory. Just alot of imagination.

i played many years keyboard before i started with producing. and it helped a lot. now i can just sit there and play new melodies without trying to find the right notes, i've the experience which next note would fit into the melody i'm playing right now. and that's extremeley use usefull. especially while playing chords to find a nice progression.
I can blow on bottles
I dont know shit about chords or something else.. I just keep trying till something sounds nice
I get good replies most of the times
No can't really play anything. Got a midi keyboard but don't know a lot about it.. Know a little about chords and that's it. But I think it's not neccesary but it's maybe useful to know a little about it.
Wouldn't Sonar, Cubase or more specifically soft synths be considered an instrument? I would even consider a groovebox or turntable an instrument.
Can play the air guitar! Here goes...
"Breakin' the law, breakin' the law... da na nah, da na nah... breakin' the law!"
Quality huh?

I can play basic guitar...basic chords, and being able to switch between them quickly, power chords, some melodies from random songs (stairway to heaven).
I had a year of piano lessons a few years back, but dont remember too much. Oh yeah and they taught us basic music theory in elementary school, which I also dont remember much of anymore.
7 years drummin', and I can play a mean Ocarina.
i can play a tiny bit of piano, i never used this skill though as i don't use a keyboard to produce.
heer heer pianoroll.
