-- Promoting yourself?

Promoting yourself?

Hardly see something like this asked, and the promotion section I thought was ONLY FOR promoting.

Anyways, I had my opportunity at playing two times at a small club/lounge type place. First time there, I did it for free. (of course) Second time, I opened for a more pop. DJ in the city, and again I did it for free. The owner calls me up 2 days after my gig, and says, "You know what, come drop by, I have some money for you"

That has to be a good thing right?

However I checked that lounge's calender for the next month, and no gigs or nothing for me. Also a guy I met at the club, plays at some other night club (however a smaller one) but he keeps saying he will call me, he will call me, but never does. I guess this is what the experienced DJs were talking about when getting the door slammed in your face.

So here I am, no gigs nothing, I want to promote myself I want clubs to be begging for me to play there around the world - my dream (who doesn't?) I did give out promo cd's at my first gig but that's it.

What else can I do to promote myself? I feel all trapped not going playing anywhere, again, I'm just getting into the performing part.

/ Long POst

Thanks for any help!

if they told you to drop by to pick up some cash, then drop by and pick it up!
Speak to him about some more slots- thats called a foot in the door- the trick is propping it open just enough so it doesnt slam in your face and break your nose.

Clubs schedule several months in advance btw.....

That's the thing. When I got the call, I showed up the next day, but the owner wasn't there (depeche mode concert) so his partner/co-owner gave the money to me. I forget (it was about a week ago) but I think he said 'in the future, come by and play again' and I replied with, 'of course, anytime'

But again, this is a lounge type thing, would be nice to move on to bigger crowds. However the two times I played here they were only warm up slots, so I shouldn't really be waiting for a club gig just yet, right? Anyways I'm thinking of doing a radio show to promote myself, but when reading the info, it says the shows are broadcast from your home computer. Wtf? Don't radio shows get broadcast from the studio?

Most radio shows are broadcast live from a PC, or the DJ sends in an mp3 recording of a set he prepared for the radio. Just picture your house as the radio studio, isn't internet fantastic.

But how do I 'talk' to the listeners?

Yea but from my home computer? I'm still not following. Call ins, talking to listeners, how do I hear them, from the radio? And I respond in my computer mic? How do you hook your computer up to work with the radio? I guess the station sets it up for you?

Follow it up then....swing by or call him. The chance is there.

What I don't understand is from what perspective you're thinking of doing this?

FM radio? ( which would be almost exclusively done in a radio station or prerecorded in advance at your house maybe )
Webcast ? ( which would be almost exclusively done from someone's house ).

In either case I don't know why you would ever need to handle call-ins. If that's you're idea of a show I'm curious to hear where you what direction you want to take it.

Most electronic shows will talk about music, new releases, upcoming parties but usually never have call ins.

There's systems out there for a phone terminal to be hooked up to a mixer but in your case I don't see the use.

Directly from site...

"FM or Internet Application

If you would like your own slot on Club246 Radio you need to fill out the form below. Answer every question even if it is just with a N/A or a "no".

Please also ensure that the genre of music you will be featuring on your show is of the right format. Genres that are out of format include, hhc, hardcore, and gabber.

If you do not have the time to host your own show, or there are no slots available which fit your schedule, you can still get your music featured during primetime hours! Please email us at [email protected]

All shows are broadcasted live from your own home computer. You are allowed to pre-record the music if you would like to do that but you must be available at your computer to chat with your listeners during your broadcast. Also, you must broadcast more than just music. Talk talk talk! Talk about local events, do giveaways, and most importantly promote yourself and others!

The shows are done on a weekly basis and attendance is mandatory. With the exception of emergency situations, skipping shows will not be tolerated. We provide you with an opportunity to market yourself to audiences you would have never reached otherwise and in return you are required to broadcast each and every week during your scheduled time or obtain a cohost or temporary replacement who can broadcast on your behalf when you are not available."

don't just give your cd to promoters
people are the reason anyone will book you
you have to draw a crowd, otherwise what's the point in booking you
so give your mixes out to people who come, talk to them, be friendly and approachable
if you're a good dj, people are more than willing to shoot the shit with you

now that you can play out, build a following

Listen dude, you have to keep reminding them of your existance. Hit them with a demo every so often. They probably wont listen to it but it will remind them of your existance. They probably have a hundred guys just like you so you have to be presistant.
Come to them with ideas for nights, have ideas that might pull in people. Say you want to do a party (but not private) and wondered if you could have some time on the decks etc.

You got as far as you did, now you have to go into overdrive.

The trick is doing all this without seeming too pushy as to come across as offensive. But you have to be a little pushy.

yup, i've moved demos to the top of my listen pile cause some kid was persistant and kept asking if i'd had time to listen to his cd yet whenever i saw him out

that's the key, be persistant, but also know that promoters can be very busy people with little free time
you want to stay near the front of their thoughts while not being too pushy

this is the stage where you have your break, you need to take advantage of it and whore yourself... not in the literal sense though... unless maybe that's what you/they like... i'm not here to judge
