Worst disasters...

Along the lines of Hindenburg and the Titanic, what are some of the worst disasters in history?

As far as casualties or significance of event? The Challenger blow up was pretty significant--as was Columbia to a similar extent. Are you looking for man-made destruction or natural disasters? Sounds like more of the former. How about PanAm flight whatever it was over Lockerbee Scotland? The San Francisco earthquake in the that late 80's/early 90's? There are near limitless possibilities.

Oh Snap! First TO, then McNabb, then Westbrook! It's OVAH BABY! And the Falcons are trying to follow the lead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disasters

Oddly, it neither mentions the plague or Windows 95

Yeah, after posting I found that list. I was actually thinking about today what would make for a great big-budget disaster movie like Titanic.

Something like tjernobyl or 9/11 could probably be pretty cool

Yeah, but really Nova Scotia, who cares?

I was just thinking, has there been a good Hiroshima movie to come out in the last decade? Also, I can't remember if there was a movie ever made about the Great Chicago Fire, but that would be another good disaster I think.

Good one. I actually got married in the only church in downtown Chicago that wasn't destroyed by that fateful fire. Wasn't it started by a lantern in a barn or something?

And still, regarding Nova Scotia. It may be remote, but 2000 deaths certainly gives it some street cred as an awful disaster. Huge munitions explosion followed by a tsunami. I actually tried looking at the region on Google Earth last night to see if any relics of the incident were visible, but I couldn't really notice anything specific.

Chernobyl*, mr.Andrews

I think this is by far one of the worst disasters outside of man made ones. Well, it was from a man made machine but it was because of a malfunction or whatever it was. But the effects were horrible. To this day, much of nothern region of Chernobyl is still being tested for radioactivity amongst children, adults, infants, food, water, etc. It's just horrible.
