Good MP3 Bitrate converter?

Thought ill save some room by converting some livesets to 128kbps,anyone know a GOOD converter that converts from 192kbps straight to 128kbps??

i use soundforge. there are lots software that will do it.

dbPowerAmp (google search) will do the job quickly and easily for you.

BUT

I strongly recommend you don't do it. Mp3 doesn't sound great at the best of times but if you re-encode it will definately sound awful. Lossy compression on lossy compression = very poor sound quality

In that case I would recommend using a format different from mp3. Ogg or aacplus. In that case you can transcode/convert a file from 192kbps mp3 to a 128kbps ogg file without having a huge quality loss (because ogg and aacplus have at 128kbps at least the same quality as mp3 at 192kbps). Your files will shrink but the quality will remain almost unchanged.

I think i rather stick to mp3 files but how does the transition from mp3 to ogg sounds? any special drops in quality?? does it take more time to convert?

oje_oje: I'm 99% sure you're wrong

I cant say for sure from first hand experience but the principle is the same, ogg and mp3 are both lossy forms of compression and the downsized mp3 -> ogg file will sound bad. It will sound very slightly better than mp3 -> mp3 because ogg is a better format but it will sound bad none the less.

There is no way around this, if you reconvert you're going to lose a lot of quality i'm afraid.

I've reread your post and i think you're comparing a 128 ogg file to a 192 mp3 file, both encoded from the same wav file. In that case yes there would probably be next to no difference is sound quality but because the source file is an mp3 no matter what lossy format you convert it to you will lose a lot of quality

cuz there's no reason to put in a cd just to listen to 1 set, after a while you just forget it exists...

its not a matter of what program. if you use a low bitrate, then the file will sound worse no matter what. 128 isnt awfull , but it can distort cymballs and stuff like that sometimes. id suggest keeping the bitrate high, or use Variable Bit Rate at the 128-200 lvl if you can pick and choose. or just suck it up and use the highest possible of 320. its sounds real real good. wav suxorz-to big.
