You wouldn't steal someone's hardware synth to get started producing would you? If you want to get to producing trance for little or no money you could start with:

E-MU Xboard or similar

Host/Sequencer:
Fruityloops - ~$100
EnergyXT - ~$50
Numerous free trackers

VST Synths:
ReFX Vanguard - Well under $100
V-Station - Under$100
Adventus - Under $50
Synth 1 - Free
FreeAlpha - Free
Triangle I and II - Free
Lots of other free VSTs - check KVR

Wav Editor:
Audacity - Free

Effects:
Too many free effects to list - check KVR

I'm pretty sure we have all at some point gotten us a warez version of some synth, either to toss it away or evaluate it before buying, in some cases not buying it at all, or downloaded the latest Metallica CD or got Half Life 2 cracked online... but this subject is taboo on the internet. So if you don't want people in online forums bashing you for talking about it, or even worse, the FBI knocking down your door (that seems to be the trend lately...), then keep your mouth shut.
