Grilled for liking EDM?

Just curious as to wether anyone else is at the recieving end of abuse when they say they like EDM? Because it seems that the only type of music which is 'legal' at my college is Punk, Rock, Emo and all that type of stuff, which ain't my thing but I don't really go around slagging it off if you know what I mean? Just curious that's all.

I once got a hand chopped off on a trip to the Mid East for listening to EDM. Well, either listening to EDM or stealing that pack of bubblelicious from the store/gas station, which are all owned and operated by white people, strangely enough.

I'm just kidding, i've never been to the Mid East.

But I do take some abuse for listening to EDM. Their abuse only makes me stronger. In a few months i'll be strong enough to deflect meteors from an earth-colliding path by blowing in their general direction and make tall women cum in a single thrust.

That is quite true the more people talk crap about it the more it makes me listen, but it just does my head in the way that just because I'm not one of these lame ass rock 'dudes' and copying anyone else, you become a outcast or some shit.

yeah, i've been made fun of fo' sho' - only here in canada though...
people are surprised that i actually admit to listening to this! hahaha!

well all i can say is that most people who listen to EDM have already listened to all that other stuff and have grown out of a lot of it, so really, we're much more intelectually advanced (or brain dead, what ever your spin on it may be )....

oh the comedy...

Posted by Numidia on Dec-15-2005 21:51:

I get teased for sure by friends... nothing harsh tho. People are pretty ignorant about "techno" (as you have to refer to it for them to know what you're talking about) here.

I was listening too Rap 5 years ago and wasn't a very big fan of Trance and the other EDM styles, but I did listen too some producers back then, not many though.

Anyways, alot of people started listening to rap and I felt like I had too do a change because I didn't really enjoy it anymore. Alot of people started listening too rap when I stopped listening too it.

I decided I wanted something that I enjoyed alot more than those losers who just wanted to fuck around and show themselves in fancy cars and all that shite..

I started listening too Trance and I loved it now, When people finally realized that I stopped listening too Rap they started too ask me what I'm into. I just answered Trance, they had to make a unnecessary comments about it.

But I didn't really care about what they said, I only answered what I thought about their style, and that everyone copies everyone.

Now, I've got one friend that I can share my musical taste with and that's one of my best friends, We've been friends for a very long time and we have common interests, that's probably why we like the same stuff.

Tell them to suck your di*k while listening EDM!

I always find it the hardest to describe when i'm talking to girls.

Problem is i say trance, and automatically they assume it's hard core! I have to then explain that it's like dance music, but not as commercial (as the stuff they'd hear on the radio, well on the radio over here, in dublin.) And that it's more melodic etc, few female (sometimes male) vocals thrown in for good measure etc.

I dunno, i hate telling them about it without being able to show them an example.

And yes, i have gotten a few funny looks, quite often actually.

I'm known as the guy who likes trance/house etc, by many of my girl-friends and lads as well.

Oh well, i love it More then they love their music i'm guessing as well!

I don't understand why anyone cares what other people think of their music...

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Dec-15-2005 23:09:

People try and go at me for it, but I tend to bury them in a snarled reply. Fuck it. People may say "that music is shit", but it's simply a case of "I think the music you play is shit, which is the joy of personal opinions. Now fuck off". Besides, I can usually find at least one record that people will latch on to.

Posted by airmartin on Dec-15-2005 23:10:

Well I don't really care what people think of my music it's just that for example when at partys or something if I even thought of putting on some Trance or something it would like most probably get switched straight off, but I have to tolerate the crap they put on and I aslo agree about explaining it to people, esspecially girls. Nine times out of ten they will assume tracks like Dj Sammy - Heaven and tunes like that which if you try and explain that it's nothing like that just digs you a deeper hole, so I gave up a long time ago.

Posted by Col on Dec-15-2005 23:23:

A lot of the times I've had this issue, people have complained that it's "repetitive".
Of course it's fucking repetitive, it's called "trance".

A lot of people who aren't into EDM can't understand the merit of the music, mainly because there's no real image attached to it. Whether people admit it or not, one of the main reasons they're into Green Day or Cradle Of Filth or Franz Ferdinand or Eminem or Dashboard Confessional is that there's an image/style attached to these bands which they find appealing.

All you have to remember is that, in a lot of cases, these people have no musical taste at all - they just want an excuse for floppy hair and studded belts.

And there are a lot of people out there who WILL appreciate and understand EDM even if they aren't necessarily fans; however, these people often have musical tastes that are already somewhat mature. For example, I'm friends with people who listen to Sigur Ros and Radiohead and GYBE, and they don't have a problem with EDM at all - in fact many of them listen to it on the side.

I wasn't talking specifically about how i feel about people hating my music. Although i realise you were addressing the whole thread.

My comments were more along the lines of trying to explain to people that when they all sweep the brush across all of us calling us all 'dance heads' that it's not true, and that in fact, there are a lot of various genres of dance music.

Now trying to describe techno would probably be easier then describing trance IMO of course.

ps. Col, You're completely right about some friends not minding EDM music etc, and the comment of listening to it on the side made me chuckle. I often see some of my friends listening to music on MSN, and sometimes you'll see them listening to some of the music i have given them over the year, be it House music, progressive stuff or some lovely commercial Armin/Tiesto! lol

It's not people's opinions thati care so much about, it's being able to show them exactly what i like that frustrates me, and unless they're at my place i have no real way of showing them.

I now have a group of about 7 of us who enjoy listening to trance in general. Basically it will be the main genre of music for the whole night. These lads used to like RnB, and various other guitar bands etc. Being slightly naive i described then showed them some examples. They were intrigued and then began to like the music. 4 years later they've all got a hefty chunk of their hard drive taken up by sets, hours of sets. Something i find funny as they used to ask me how the hell i could have a single mp3 file which was 2 hours long!.. now they listen to them weekly!

You should see how hard it is to explain what trance is in high school. Everyone just assumes its techno gay shit made with just computers that go beep beep beep. Then they go listen to their hip-pop sellout stuff. Everyone here also assumes that if you listen to trance you do E! What the hell is wrong with them! Sigh.

However some of my friends like drum and bass which is the closest they will ever get to EDM.

Posted by snowboarder45 on Dec-16-2005 03:21:

Whenever someone says something to me negative about EDM, to myself I'm just kinda like - dude, shut up.. this guy obviously has no clue about this type of music. It's too diversified, one trance song sounds one way, another trance song sounds another way and so on. People will hear one EDM song and hate it automatically.

On the other hand, I do get compliments sometimes for the stuff I play out of my car, it's always Nu NRG for some reason though. ex. I was pulling through MacDonalds playing "The Eternal" (Nu NRG mix) and the girl cashier heard it and asked me about it and said it sounded cool the next time I pulled thru mcdonalds a week later. I just thought that was kind of interesting.

Posted by Numidia on Dec-16-2005 03:52:

Could it be argued that the average person in Canada is even more clueless about EDM than in the US? At least the US has Miami where EDM is fairly mainstream from what i've heard. There is no Miami equivalent in Canada. Anyways, I'm just throwing that idea out there I dno if it's true.

Posted by dOgMa55 on Dec-16-2005 04:04:

where im at ive noticed that mostly only caucasion people such as myself ever talk shit about it. Any other group can jam to breaks AT lEaSt.

Mostly people give it the connotation as that of hippy music in the 70's.

Posted by Spirit5 on Dec-16-2005 04:10:

I'de get teased a little during high school about liking "techno music". There were some kids into it, but the vast majority were the punk, metal, pop, r&b and rap type. I was one of the few kids who was listening to trance on his way home from school. Majority of people thought I was into techno. There was this kid in my spanish class that was into detroit techno, and I told him about trance and he had no clue, until I stumble upon his MySpace profile recently and find that he is into some of the DJs/Producers I had told him I liked, such as Armin Van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. So as some people might tease you about it, others might be inspired and find some stuff you like, they like too. I've heard a few fellow students who have gotten into trance and other forms of EDM after being big into rap or punk in high school, which I think is pretty cool. People's tastes change, and sometimes you leave a bigger impact on them then you think. Heck I wanted to DJ a school dance my senior year, but no one wanted to listen to my stuff, it was all about the rap, pop and r&b, which are fine forms of music, but EDM is just what has appealed to me for many years, and i've always loved sharing it.

Posted by mmilo on Dec-16-2005 04:14:

Yeah, some people just don't like trance. Maybe they haven't heard enough of it to make an unbiased opinion, maybe not. It's definitely hard to express why electronica sounds so good.

If I'm at a club, and some euro-mainstream song randomly comes on amidst the hip-hop, some friends look at me and say "Hey, they're playing some techno! You should enjoy this!"

I smile and die a little inside.

Posted by Sykonee on Dec-16-2005 06:14:

Well, sure I'd get ribbed about liking some EDM. Of course, I'd rib them right back regarding their grunge, or faux-industrial (Manson) or faux-hip hop (I.C.P.).

Posted by Allied Nations on Dec-16-2005 08:38:

When people try and talk shit about edm i say, let me take you to a proper party, then make your judgment.

And thus far, the people ive taken out to good parties have ended up liking it a lot more.

Posted by Rick D on Dec-16-2005 08:45:

yeah i do all the time...

stop listening to that 'techno' music...

you must be a druggie listening to that...

i just tell them to fuck off usually
