goddamnit. how does he get away with this?

He was the second (arrogant) part of Antiloop, so he isn't really trademarked with quality.
Altho its always funny when people find out how some artists "cheat", i really enjoy that kind of reading.

It's his sound, so what? Tilt - New Day (David West Remix) is great!

they look similar but somewhat different

but i don't give a **** .. the tracks rock!!

I like 'Larry Mountains 54' a lot. Reminds me of driving home at 1am with Andi Durrant playing on Galaxy...

But yeah, I haven't heard those others. If they are so similar then that's kind of cheap; it's annoying when producers use templates for different productions.

the guy is a genius, recycled, yeah right. he is beyond talented and his production techniques are flawless

And Sounds Rushing is the only good track of those 3

I think very opposite. Those all are awesome tunes. I don't care if he uses same methods, the results are brilliant and Sounds Rushing is definitely the tune of the year for me. David West - the best producer this year IMO.

I understand this debate, since sometimes I will admit to thinking some producers use too many of the same basslines or melodies in their songs, however I also realize that a lot of these producers like to have a "trademark" sound. This is what seperates them from other artists so they are identifiable as "this is so and so". I mean producers like to have their individuality, it's no different than bands who have a trademark sound and like to duplicate it, because that is what sells and what people like.

It may irritate some people, but if you think about, alot of the Beatles songs, especially their earlier work, pretty much followed the same formula until they started to experiment in the later 60s with some different sounds. The same can be said for a lot of artists and bands, especially those starting out. It takes time to get a matured sound, if the artists is still churning out the same stuff after say 10 or 15 years of producing music professionally, then thats cause for concern. How long has David West been at it? I dunno but I don't think he's been around for THAT long to really have established himself as a producer. I'm sure within the next 5 years if he is still around, his sound may change a bit, but still keep some of his trademarks. Same could be said for artists like Probspot. Both of whom I am a fan of (David West and Probspot) but like I said, I understand where some of you are coming from with this criticism. I'm just offering my opinion and analysis of it.

it's valid. my minor at uni was music theory. almost all of the most successful artists to ever live have a trademark sound that is INSTANTLY recognizable. it's what made them famous

saying, miles davis sounds the same skat singing on every track is absurd...

saying bill evans sounds the same on the piano is absurd... further more, saying bill evans pieces all sound the same is even more absurd, yet he used the same instruments for 4 albums and used 3 out of 5 same players.

To me, West is a SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK producer.

Ok, well the basis of my statement came after I played Sounds Rushing over and over (because it truly was a beautiful tune); then I heard he came out with Larry Mountains, and I said "By God, I gotta get my hands on this!" And when I listened to it, I thought, "By god, this sounds just like Sounds Rushing! Recycled! "

And I cried.

This is what you call his signature sound. Hopefully he'll evolve and change styles. Just take a listen to Paul Van Dyk, he uses the same damn instruments in his music for a while now and nobody's bitching about that. That's because it's good music so enjoy for what it is.

Anyone remember Audioholics - External Key...This song also has the David West touch.

yea, his tracks are definitely easily recognizable. the percussion, bassline sounds, etc.

but in my opinion, they are all very well produced and sound great.

There are lots of threads with the same comments showed on this thread till now, like "all tracks sounds the same", so let me remember other artists to add to this David West thread:

fred baker (with that snare-kick thing, sounding picotto or frank biazzi years ago)

and the newcomers, i mean, more "popular" in the scene nowadays:

by the way i like all above, i dont dislike noone, if i dont like the unique sound of an artist, i move on...
but thats personal oppinion, u can continue complaining about the "all tracks sounds the same" old history, its up to ya...

But as an individual producer I don't think he's established himself enough yet. He's doing that now with his remixes and productions, but he's only done a few remixes like his remix of "Time Goes By", "Sounds Rushing", "Eye Am" and his latest remix with Inkfish of "Eternity". But one thing to note is that his older productions like "Envy" and "Carrier" don't sound much like "Larry Mountains 54". I respect him as a producer, still curious to know more about him, but feel every producer, even if they have been at it for a while, still needs time to grow. Armin and Ferry are good examples of guys whose sound has progressed. Armin's is deeper and techier at times, and Ferry's established himself as having a sound that has electro influences, mixed with trance. So those who think David West's productions all sound the same, check out "Envy" and "Carrier" and get back with me as to what you think. Thanks.

yeah, I sort of agree. I enjoyed his Antiloop works a lot more than his new tracks (which are good too - like Larry Mountains 54 which is very well done).

but for people who doubt his production skills, check out older tracks like:

Antiloop - This is the night
Antiloop - Purpose in life
Antiloop - Signing off
Antiloop - Theme Of Antiloop (B&B Remix)

another bomb is Dallas Superstars - Fast Driving (Antiloop short m.o.n.s.t.e.r remix)

etc etc etc. The fact that I grew up with those tunes may have an influence on my opinion, but still I find those to be awesome pieces of EDM

I think he's already established himself enough with tracks like:

Synergy - Hello Strings (together with Andreas Hermansson)
Dominic Plaza - Sounds Rushing (remix)
Tilt - New Day (Remix)
Pete Lazonby - Sacred Cycles (Remix)
Larry Mountains 54 (together with Hermansson)

All big tracks.

and his remix with Inkfish of Matt Darey's Eternity is good too. And then there's Envy and Carrier and that Eye Am remix. Not all of those are released (yet) but the guy is pure quality. Best producer this year.
