How much does a good lawyer cost?

The lawyer i use for my company is charging me $300/hr, and i just realized that the man is a fucking idiot. I heard that there are good lawyers who charge half as much, which makes me wonder why on Earth i'm wasting money on this guy. That being said, what, in your opinion, is a pretty good lawyer supposed to charge? What should my budget be? And can i just call up random lawyers and ask for their rates? Also, are there lawyers that specialize in businesses?

asking "what does a good lawyer charge" is like saying "what does a good car cost".

Define good. Define your purpose for needing a lawyer.

The Law Society of Upper Canada has a wealth of information online and offers a referal service as well...I'd highly suggest starting there instead of going by people's opinions.

lawyer rates depend on the specialty. I deal with civil litigators all the time and will pay between 180 and 250/hour. I have no idea what you'd be looking at for real estate or corporate lawyers specializing in construction as I rarely deal in that. Unfortunately, I don't know many firms that are involved in such things so I wouldn't be able to give a recommendation.

A quick tip..... If you go with a larger firm they will have a number of junior lawyers on staff. They tend to bill out at $125/hour. Request that a junior handle your account with the supervision of a partner. That way the bulk of the work will be done at $125/hour with only the occasional 1/2 hour consult at the higher rates.

if you want a good lawyer call your local bar association and do a check on them
records are kept and you can also see how much they charge usually, so you will know if you are being taken for a ride.

What is worse paying $300/hr on a bad lawyer?

OR

Coming on TA to find out if it's a rip-off.

THAT is a toughy.

We do a lot of construction law, but I doubt are rates are any better.

For corp/commercial things - $300/hour is reasonable.
