Phases of production level

So I'm kind of in this little phase of my production. Like most people start out with not really knowing much about their sequencer, so when they create a track it's hard to really make it sound "pro" without knowing the sequencer. Once you realize how the sequencer works and you've made a few tracks, you start developing some sounds, messing around with presets, adding some effects, molding your own sound using eq, etc. I call this the intermediate level. I feel like I'm stuck now between an intermediate level and the level right before you actually start creating your own sound and making really good tracks. I know it's a long road to success, but I keep finding myself trying to develop my own sound and adding effects and really just trying to do the effects part instead of actually working on the arrangement of the track. I really don't have anymore ideas for how my songs should be arranged, but I have endless ideas on how this sound would fit this other one and tons of other stuff. I'm really just wondering where everyone else would put themselves on the production level "spectrum" or what they've done to maybe overcome and possibly jumped a few levels (maybe from pure talent?).

me ===> newbie...not total newbie...but I wouldn't call myself a pro, or intermediate

well maybe beginning to be intermediate lol

I am the new Tiesto

just like everyone else in here

I'm not the new tiesto.

I'd consider myself few steps below pro. Not qualitywise, but mostly on the musical aspects of my music.

Posted by mysticalninja on Dec-28-2005 00:39:

I'm kind of where you are. I'm too focused on the sounds themself and perfecting them to ever get around to the arrangement of the sounds..

yep, thats me down to a cup of tea, i absolutely hate it aswell coz it means i barely ever finish tracks, but i dont see myself being very close to pro.

Hi,

Well i was a total neewbie, then yesterday i came across something on the net that totally took me from the neewbie to a level a bit higher i guess.(if i didnt find what i dound yesterday i wouldve still been a real neewbie for sometime)

Maybe thats what you need.Maybe you are missing something that is going to take you to the next level.I dont know if you might be struggling with any aspects of making music, but i was a bit discouraged, until i found my discovery a few days ago.Now i have a renewed enegy.Maybe thats what you need BRO.

true true...I don't know. I have the passion and patience...it's just I get stuck in everything else and not the arrangement.

I Dont think there's actually a "Pro" when it comes to music

its just how ur Tracks will sound , The Arrangment , Mixing and of course the Unique Part in each Production , obviously that everyone will develope his own style sooner or later
I Would call my Self a Unique guy when it comes to Genres Combination

Really like to blend all kind of wierd genres !
still not a Pro , got so much to Learn

have $400000000 studio, 15 sound engineers.... now thats pro

Posted by Diginerd on Dec-29-2005 21:29:

No. That's broke.. :-P

For me, the defining point of being "At a standard" (I refuse to call it "Pro") is when you can have one of your tracks dropped in a club as part of a set and the crowd dances and enjoys themselves.

It's also in the exact moment you will hear any flaws you left in there, and if you are really unlucky the crowd notices them too and the DJ mixes out quickly to avoid bottles being thrown at him/her.

I've been in both situations. The first is the absolutely one of the best feelings in the world, the latter is definately one of the worst.

With practice you get success more often than failure, and before too long the failures dry up.

Keep going. It's a long road, but the payoff is worth it (At least in terms of personal satisfaction!)

I can create 4 bars of spine-tingeling goodness ....

But I can never seem to turn that into a whole track. My arrangement skills definately need a little work!

Posted by djlogik on Dec-30-2005 01:46:

Yeah I used to be like that jojimbo. I think you really just need some music theory as a base. That's my main problem currently. I can't create good pad chord progressions because I don't really know chords and what not. So I've been reading and it's helping me progress tremendously.

Posted by Dj Pyster on Dec-30-2005 02:17:

Yeah i'm in that phase too, all i do is mess around with make sounds with my synths and then play some tunes on my midi controller, every time I get to making a song i usually don't make it past the percussion.

I'd say I'm at the level where I have a definite sound, and I can certainly hear the flaws in my own music.

I wouldn't call myself pro, though, because I'm not paid.

I could totally own you all.

Alot of pro artist only have good production: the sound is clear, poweful, perfect. The musical aspect however is usually lacking and unoriginal.......the thing is, you can go far with good production skills and medium musical creativity.
As for me.....my production skills are lacking, i dont get exactly the sound I want, but I guess im okay in the musical department, but I could use improvement

Some don't even have great production. Some pros have crappy synth programming and sample selection, and I have to wonder how they got to the pro level.

That one seems the most important to me.. At least that's what's made me stick with producing for hours to get it right...

Posted by djlogik on Jan-02-2006 15:39:

haha that sounds like me. Sometimes I'll sit here just waiting around to figure out how I can get that exact sound I'm looking for. I'll try to create my own patch and all that stuff and finally when I finish I think it sounds alright. Then I try putting it in the mix and it doesn't fit well. I end up just saving the patch and waiting to use it until a next time when in fact there really is never a "next" time for me. heh oh well I'll figure it out sometime.

Yeah,..I was almost giving up producing after a year.
my main issue was the sound itself,...sounded too static, boring and not well mastered overall.
especially the mastering-issue was pissing me off,..no matter what i did there was always something fucked up. nowadays my former weakness is my biggest strength and i can focus on producing itself. which is always a "problem" until you make the track u wanted it to be.
