IS the media racist?
I have to agree with some people that the media is a bit racist when it comes to reporting. Although i am the first to dismiss many cries of racism (since the allegation is grossly abused) i have to say that this time there is some merit.
While there is no doubt that most of the gun crime this year has been committed by young black males, most of the victims have also been black.
But what do we hear from politicians and the media in the last few days? "it's finally gone too far". Why? Because a young pretty white girl was killed? What about the innocent black bystanders that have been killed this year? What about the little 4 year old boy? wasnt that too far? Wasnt somebody else killed on the same corner this year? Where's the outcry for that person?
I think this city needs to take a long hard look at itself. The media needs to start reporting the facts instead of their spin on things. Politicians need to start acting instead of talking bullshit and people need to start demanding real solutions instead of banning law abiding citizens from owning guns and a false sense of security that would be provided by privacy invading CCTV.
Oh and lots stop blaming the US for our gun problems. Even if the guns came from there (which studies have proved most dont) they still were brought here by canadians and had to pass through CANADIAN CUSTOMS.
is the media "racist" or does it simply sound good in print to report that some awful minority drug dealing thug gunman killed an innocent white girl?
spin...irresponsible spin, that is.
In addition to her ethnicity being irrelevant...it's also irrelevant that she's pretty...that's she was a good student...that she was an athlete...etc. etc. etc.
the fact is that an innocent bystander was killed by some piece of shit...it shouldn't matter if it was a good little white girl or if it was a crackhead homeless person.
to the media though, it does...and people out there eat it up.

But why is it that suddenly toronto has "lost its innocence" when a white girl was killed yet look at all the innocence that was lost before her this year alone. a 4 year old shot at home, another kid shot on a bus. Both black. Again im usually the first to dismiss "racism" allegations as unfounded but i have to agree with this one. |

I don't disagree with the idea that there can be a racial bias when reporting a story....just like there is a political bias as well.
The most recent shooting of a young white girl catches a bigger spot light because of the time of year and the fact she was a completely innocent individual just out doing her thing.
But the whole media racial thing has been around a long time.....there was a big up roar in the states about the media coverage a young, white, good looking, missing female got compared to a young, black missing female.
The media isn't racist....... it's consumers are.
Media as an industry is concerned primarilly with selling papers or advertising (or both). To do this they need readership/veiwership/listenership. The best way to achieve growth in these areas is to give the market what they want, which is to say carry stories they care about. Subsequently, the story that the will propt people to buy the paper or stay tuned in for the news cast is the one that they feature. WE as a society seem to be more interested in the killing of an attractive 15 year old caucasian girl then we are the killing of a 17 year old black gang memeber, thus, the media will give greater coverage to said 15 year old girl. This isn't because the reporters, editors and news directors are racist..... it's because they are profit motivated.... it just so happens that stories containing certain racial elements generate more profit then others, this is our failing not the media's.
