A little entertainment for you guys....

So I'm up at 2am and this little idea popped into my head. There was these two songs that have similar effects so I took advantage of them. I took kind of a big risk in mixing two different genres together, but I found the result quite unexpected. I really love this transition and want to use it in a future mix, but the only reason I'm so hesitant to use it is because it builds down instead of building up, which leads me to my question: Should I use this transition or not?

You've put a big smile on my face with that now.

It works pretty well, and it might even sound good (though then agaqin, it might sound awful) if you brought the end of Message In A Bottle back in after Hello Ladies, to ramp the energy back up. Might work!

It's a good transition mate But as u were saying the energy of the two tracks isn't quite the same. But oh well, I practice this kind of transitions all the time sometimes and it can work quite well.

But do you always spin at like 145 bpm?

Posted by Ontheface on Jan-03-2006 12:11:

That sounded really good, what are the names of those tracks. I'm dying hear the rest of the second track.

Posted by Joost on Jan-03-2006 12:25:

First one is The Police - SOS (Sander van Doorn Remix) (or TBA - SOS), but I don't know the second one.

Tha transition itself worked out pretty well I think, but you lost all the energy when you brought that second track, try another track thar is similar to SOS, that has a little more energy...

Very sick transition man! Love the first song SOS, Armin played that alot in his early 200's of the ASOT radio show. If u play the transition at the right time in ur set it shouldnt be a problem, the energy has to be brought back down from time to time.

Thumbs up

No I don't. I usually start off in the late 130's range and build my way up.

You're right, the energy is one of the things I was afraid of. As far as the genres of music I was experimenting quite a bit. It gets kind of boring playing straight trance all the way through the set so I wanted to mix different genres as an experiment. Also, the second song is actually around the 130 Bpm range and I speeded it up
to 140 Bpm.

Thank you guys for your suggestions! I'm going to end up using this as an opener instead.

well, you can still mix different styles, you can go from dark proghouse, slowly build it up to prog trance, trance, techtrande and even end techno if you'd like to...but the crossovers between the different styles have to build progressively so you don't lose/slam in all the high energetic tracks at once. Of course, exeptions can be made - but you have to find the right tracks, and the transition has to be spot on.

Didn't really like that transition to be honest.. Like many people have told you before, the loss in energy is _too_ big! And the hi-hats on SOS are not sounding that well with Hello Ladies.. But maybe that could be arranged with some EQing

It's good that you're experimenting tho, keep it up!

id have to agree too the energy drops way to much. transition if good though!

do you have a cdj/pc linked to your mixer? looped drum/kick samples can make a hooge difference to some transitions

Transition wasn'too bad but the bpm's were TOO fast..I thought I always had the bpm's too high
Anyway thanks for givin the name of the second track..I already heard in a tisto set i thought and I love it!

Go to a gabba night and you'll never say that again.

On the mix front, I think would work - yeah it builds down, but it could work as almost a "breakdown" in a set... drops down for that then you build up again for the next track (this is more likely to work live than in a recorded mix though).

Alternatively, you could finish a mix like that - I quite often take it back down a step for the last track in a mix as it can leave the whole mix sounding more rounded, although in this case the leap down might be a bit to large & sudden.

Posted by ZeJayMan on Jan-08-2006 14:06:

It would be OK if you were following another DJ and letting everyone know you were taking the set in another direction.

Posted by Nemesis44 on Jan-08-2006 15:03:

I'm with Stu on this one.

It would most likely to work live.
There is nothing wrong in changing the tempo from time to time. You will find that the more you play out the more you understand that people don't want to be bombarded the whole time.
It could also work nicely if you find yourself in a position where you don't have the favour of the crowd and you need to go in a different direction.

With regards to the mix itself it's just a harmonic mix nothing too fancy. The majority of harmonic mixers here are probably thinking the same thing.

Not wanting to sound discouraging or anything but...
If you are hoping to make it as a DJ, you guys had better get used to the idea that pretty much all your mixes should sound like this or better.

To stevieboy32808
Good job though, you are definately moving in the right direction. And don't worry about the BPM comments. Your speed was fine, just too many people who are used to the prog sound around.

Cheers

I cant comment, due to doublebeat.

any transition that has DB is sh!t

Posted by Nemesis44 on Jan-09-2006 08:33:

Oh c'mon!

They guy was asking more about the artistic content and has discovered some tunes that work nicely together. Sure, the matching could have been a bit more tidy but to dismiss it as sh!t is a little harsh.
With comments like that I'm inclined to want to ask you to put your money where your mouth is, so let's see how you mix? You may well be good but if you are going to post be a bit more constructive or don't bother.

thats actually a really good example of a nice transition i liked it alot. doesnt have to build good to take your set in a different direction then maybe build again!

I used to play bouncy hard house 33s at 45

There was a fun game for a rainy day

sorry gota say the mix was not good at all. dont care for the songs together but its good that your tryin new things... eq outa the track a bit better and get it beat matched and it mite sound better but i cant say that it would matter much with the loss of energy. keep at it and record everything... listen to it over and over. save some of the older recordings and go back every 4-6 weeks and youll notice the improvements big time! then try to mix the same songs and you mite find a way to pull shit off you never thought of before. keep at it!

I liked it and Hello Ladies is a good track. As for the DBing, it was hardly anything at all, most people in a club aren't going to notice a little thing like that. It happens to everyone.
