Playstation 3

been trying to look for information on it, and wanted to open the discussion to see what you other gamers thought about it.
couple things i heard, but have no proof of right or wrong:

will have dvd burner
will have tivo capability
will be around 500 bucks
will be able to play PS2 games
will be available some time in spring

i think the second to last one is one of the biggest things that i'm looking for. and even if it could play PS1 games, i think it'd be pretty tight. i spent a lot of money on games for the PS2, which are great, and i'd love to play them again, but i don't want to keep a PS2 just to do that, know what i mean?

assuming there will be a shitload of games the way there were for PS1 and PS2, i think it's going to be a great buy, especially with those first two points.

looking at the 360 graphics makes me just think, ok, well done, but i know PS3 is going to have equally if not better graphics (looking at some of teh previews for MGS)

thoughts?

Ok, here's the answers to your questions to the best of my current knowledge (so please don't take this as gospel)...

No. The Blu-Ray drive will be read-only.

No.

Yeah, and it may well be more than that. There's a lot of expensive new technologies in this console, so it just depends how much of a loss on each console Sony are willing to take.

Yes! Sony's back catalogue of games is massive now, so they would be foolish to ignore this. I still play my PS1 games on my PS2, and I'll probably be giving them a try on my PS3 one day.

Maybe Spring 2007! There hasn't even been a playable version of the console shown yet, and so many aspects of the machine still remain unconfirmed. I'd expect Sony to squeeze the release in just before Christmas this year.

Apparently Sony have more third-party support from publishers this time around, which can only lead to even more games. PS2 was notoriously taxing to develop for and many developers struggled at first, but after seeing early PS3 tech demos I think it's safe to say developers should have that much of a problem this time.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that PS3 will outperform the 360 graphically. The bottom line is that PS3's innards are more powerful. This doesn't mean the end of the console war though. If we look back at the release of the 6th-gen consoles, Sony had the advantage of the headstart (which Microsoft have now), while the X-Box was technically superior (which the PS3 will be).

The PS2 holds the record for the fasting selling video games console ever, and I'd would expect many PS2 users to eventually make the jump to PS3.

I hope this is of some help.

Posted by JBDreamerie on Jan-06-2006 18:16:

actually, that helps a lot; i won't take it as gospel, because seriously, how badass would it be to have a dvd burner and tivo capability on the PS3?!!? wishful thinking i guess...
anyways, yea, the spring release date does seem very iffy, and sony continues to say that they guarantee they'll have it out, but it just doesn't seem that way.
i agree with what you said, it'll probably be released like the xbox was this year

I want to know if the DVD player will be able to upconvert DVDs to 1080p. I haven't read or heard much about the DVD player yet.

i don't really understand the i and p in 1080, but sony developers have said that Xbox360 can only utilize the worser of the two. PS3 will use the better of the two

I = Interlaced, the worse of the two. This means every other line is drawn on the screen.

P = Progressive, the best of the two. This means every line is drawn on the screen so you are seeing twice the lines as interlaced.

99.9% of HDTVs sold now are at best 1080i.

There's barely any 1080p tv sets available on the market, and the ones available are extremely expensive.

I don't even know if 1080p will be useful for tv shows, because most studios just upgraded to 720p, i don't think they'll throw everything for the 1080p.

Meaning, I doubt 1080p will be an intresting feature for tvs other than gaming.

very, very nice!

wow. The premier blue-ray player is about $1100

$500 seems unaffordable to some, but it seems to be the minimum PS3 might come out as

go look at a sony sxrd 50 or 60 inch lcos tv....

it makes HD look amazing

Posted by chojin on Jan-23-2006 14:46:

there was onething i read that i think needs adding.

though it might be backwards compatible, it wont take any memory cards or past controllers. meaning saved games wont be loaded onto your ps3.

Posted by ga11agher on Jan-23-2006 20:51:

can't wait - it's shaping up to be something special - just don't pin any hopes on the scheduled release date.

I'm a long time gamer (23 years now...and still new school so I've been keeping track of 360/Playstation3/Revolution news. From what I've read on Gamespot.com & Maxconsole.net, here's the skinny:

BLU-Ray, DVD & CD support
~$400 @ launch
ps1/ps2/DIVx compatibility
look for it in October/Nov 2006
the support is massive both in the States & Japan

Launch titles: 30-50
Metal Gear Solid 4, Resident Evil 5, Tekken 6, Final Fantasy (more than one), Ridge Racer 6, Gran Turismo 5...

Not to mention all the games that are coming out for the PS2, as usual

I really like the Nintendo Revolution controller. It's extremely innovative. You point it at the screen and it tracks your movements. Could mean a whole new way of playing sports games, shooters, fighting and more. I'm not partial to any one system....but Micro$oft has pretty much blown it with the 360. Only chance they have now is to release an HD or BLU-Ray add-on before the PS3 hits. Then, they'll alienate all the existing gamers with a $100-$150 upgrade. We'll see.

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Jan-24-2006 03:03:

I'm almost positive that Gran Turismo 5 won't see a launch release, Resident Evil 5 is a bit iffy as well. As for Final Fantasy games, FF12 is set for a PS2 release and I've heard nothing about any new FF game in the makes.

Posted by Final Call on Jan-24-2006 03:09:

Well hopefully Vision GT is gonna look a whole lot better...so far the damn game just looks like regular GT4 with more then 6 cars on the track and having full pit crew. I just saw pics on the new Medal of Honor - Airborne. Shows alot of what the power of the PS3 could do on that game.

ps3 divx/xvid compatible ?

wow

I take it you've never looked at one then....

cuz there is a difference, and in terms of broadcasts, its called upconverstion....which is standard in all HDTV's.

And the p which stands for progressive, is, in short, much better then i, which means interlaced....

And if you say that p isn't that much better then i, then why did progressive dvd(now standard) take over the market so fast? and virtually wipe out any interlaced DVD player....umm,cuz I'm willing to bet thats what you have now...

in terms up a 1080p boradcast you're right....probably never will be...but its the technolgy involved that makes the picture...

I dont like RE5 anymore...after seeing the trailer clip i dont like the fact that...zombies can run after your ass now...that just scares me lol

Posted by chojin on Jan-24-2006 09:56:

divx player is a nice little add on, and true they are very cheap to get now but its a good feature to have just in case.

sort of like the fact PS2 can play audio cds. youd probably never use it but its nice to know its there.

Posted by Spartan on Jan-24-2006 17:42:

don't you have to pay a monthly fee for Tivo? that would suck if it came w/ the PS3, unless you could turn it off.
