Just want to get a feel for what ppl think in the West. Working on a paper.

I don't think short samples are plagerism.

I think it really depends. If the artist is able to take a sample and build upon it, I don't necessarily think that that's plagerism. (Probably the best example I can think of at the moment would be the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony"). However, if the artist adds very little originality (like a hip-hop beat with some guy going, "uh-huh")to the sample then I would classified that as plagarism i.e. any song by Puff Daddy.

But as the saying goes, "good composers borrow, great composers steal."
