::Question:: About Paul van Dyk Recent Live Show
I saw him at Ice in Las Vegas on the 30th. The show was insane... But I do have a few questions..
What software is he using these days? He had 2 laptops running that night.
Also, if he was using Final Scratch, where were the vinyls that night?
Really interested to figure this out. Thanks.
I was wondering this same thing. Would love to get an answer.
AFAIK he's using Serato Scratch in conjuction with CDJs (not technics), and using the second laptop with Ableton Live, and while some have said he only uses this for samples...pics I have seen clearly look like hes playing whole tracks or at least major parts of tracks off it.
I've also heard some ableton effects in his sets.
So..I think thats whats up, but I could be wrong...

It's kind of like, "I hope you're all having fun watching me stare at my computer screen." For all we know he could just be doing his taxes on there or something... |
is it cigarette in his mouth?

Whats more is that the quality of an ableton mix can far exceed the quality of a CD/vinyl mix.

Whoa everyone, I was just joking. I really don't give a crap what he uses, just trying to be funny. It's true that only the music and the mixing matters, but it does make a set a little less interesting just watching a DJ use a computer.
I find the computer entertaining to tell you the truth, computers are quite fascinating I think. I just wish I could see the screen sometimes, or even some gimmicky rendition of whatever the person is doing on the thing. That whole visual is lost so you cant just look at it and know how he does it, I think that bothers alot of people. I sure would like to see what goes on on that screen the way anyone can see a dj work a mixer or a turntable, unfortunately the only way to figure out what goes on behind that screen is to read about it. Maybe that barrier is what makes kids not enjoy it as much, I dont think it would be too big of a deal to let fans see the screen to get beyond that though, that would be neat if working a computer one day became glamorous, and all us pale faced geeks became stylish.

i was reading what richie hawtin said that with people embracing technology really the problem lies that the technology is to far in advanced for people to use it.
quote: "while he revels in technology, richie doesnt want djs to abandon the art of entertainment. ask hawtin about djs shoptalk and he reveals that the topic at present relates to just how far they can push the technology, yet he, of all people, has reservations about their progress'.
" the software technology is more powerful than we need right now, and than we can even use as humans, and the problem lies in that we need new ways to interface ourselves with computers and techology, to enable us to really use all these functions and make it not only interesting and inspiring for us, but also for the audience members,"
"people may have thought that i would have been the first to use ableton out on the road, but i havent been - it's sasha and it's pvd. as much as i like forward thinking electronics and technology, i have to admit i think they're too fast, which is a little ironic for me to say, because i feel that when you take on a new technology it has to add to your craft and add to certain elements of it and allow you to go further. although those guys are able to play records in a new way now, i find the entertainment value of thier shows is compltely lacking. this opens up the area of what we need. we need a way for dj's to be able to use this technology, to use computers, and not look like they're up there checking e-mail.
etc... too much to type maybe i will scan it or somrthing?

| Originally posted by PoisonJam19 It would be pretty interesting to watch a Albeton piece put together live, but from the point of view of someone on the dancefloor it's just not as interesting as watching a turntable DJ. But, as Demoted and Clovis86 said, the positive side is Albeton mixing is always flawless, and that is what a DJ gig is all about. |
