Its time to recommend me an MP3 player

That time of year has come folks.

My old HDD mp3 player is making rattling noises and is missing a few parts from inside it from when I took it apart to fix the usb connection. Basicially, its fucked, and I need a new one.

So heres what Im looking for ->

Flash player of about 1gb.
Im not bothered about lithium/AA batteries.
Quick to fastforward through livesets. Preferably keeps its place in a track if turned off. (For continuing in a liveset)
NOT AN IPOD. (Fuck iTunes, their DRM and everything they stand for)

Any suggestions?

most definatly don't get an ipod you'll regret it rather quickly. especially that nano nonsense.

as i haven't really dealt with flash memory mp3 players can't REALLY recommend but i think SanDisk make good stuff.

It's made of metal, mostly, and the construction is very solid. Don't know for how long though, only had it for about a month.

i meant the battery life and shit, which is the biggest problem with the iPods, though i hear with the video it's been fixed. how about backlight and fast forwarding and rewinding?

The ipod video is amazing, sound quality is the best I've heard, much better than the ipod mini, which I have too.

a good reason for that is, if i checked right last time at work, is because the headphones are better you cannot expect nano to bust out high quality sound though. and most headphones/ear phones that come with players suck.

Battery life is clearly better than on iPods, especially if you buy the L version, that should have 35 hours. Dunno though, but the normal one lasts way longer than my iPod did.

Backlight great, fast forward isn't as good as on the iPod, because of no scroll wheel, but it's still good enough.

No, I use my own Sony headphones with it, the ones that cost around 18 quid, and there is definitely an increase in quality over the sound from the ipod mini, where I used the same earphones ;-).

I've ordered an IAudio U2 1GB. Haven't gotten it yet though, but the reviews are good.

get and iriver or something else.....

none of that itunes crap ahhhhh

They why has the ipod, from generations 1-5, come top of every mp3 player test that I have ever read? Surely there must be something behind it
I bought it for the sound quality of it, being from Apple I knew it would be good. I may also have been seduced by the looks too....

Posted by RickyM on Jan-08-2006 22:13:

Can't I get through to you?
It has consistently won reviews for its SOUND QUALITY, from independent publications such as Which?.
What you are saying is that you want to be different, therefore calling the ipod shit, and saying its all hype blah blah blah is your way of doing this.
I've heard this bollocks before...

I'm totally pissed with my nano, it scratched in no time, and i only used it with an iskin

I'd say buy something thats not apple. Tho I'm waiting for foopod's new version, with support for playlists. That's right I'm filling up my nano with my foobar2000.

Sound quality indeed isn't a good place to start with any player because most people don't even care for that 320 kbps actually sounding like 320 kbps or whatever, mate.

Another strike against the iPod is the battery life which diminishes throughout even months of using it.

The wheel is GREAT, and is probably what seperates it from other players, the convinience of it is unquestionable.

The price of an iPod isn't that bad in some cases, but is in others. Also, there are some players that are the same size as a regular ipod in capacity but significantly smaller in dimensions but aren't considered the "best" like the iPod.

iAudio X5 or X5L (X5L has a 35 hour battery life)

I just got a 30GB X5L for Christmas and it's amazing. Kicks the shit out of the iPod.

iRiver.

the pmp-120, which isn't exactly what you're looking for, plays music and movies of many formats, has a text viewer, and a picture viewer. all for less than $250.

12+ hours of battery life for music, 4+ hours for movies

and you can order remotes for it.

couple days ago i got the iPod shuffle, sound is good and is very small , capacity only 512mbs but not a problem for my use..
